Right. I want to sleep for 10000 years. But before I crash my sunburned, toasted, tired and vitamin defficient body into bed (yes!), I just want to take the opportunity to publicly announce my adoration and profound thanks to everyone I met this wonderful weekend up @ FRFF. It was truely one of the greatest weekends of my life:) So, this is for Lori (the worlds greatest frumommy...wouldn't that make a great tshirt??), Steve,Val, Trace(you have Jim's cd. I have your Ann Arbor), Taran, Angie, Pixel, Chris, Adam, Emily, Kimberly, Vika, Beth, Jennifer, Anna, Lizzie, LUELLA(DELURK @ ONCE YOU FS ;) !), BRANDIE(YOU TOO! NOW!), Erin, Mindy...*X*, Logan, Eric, Audrey, Rick, Rosemary, MC, TRACEY EARL, those 2 random TMBG people who I hooked up with front row MF seats, hKath, Mike and god only knows how many countless others...I ADORE YOU ALL MORE THAN, um, well, MORE THAN FOOD, SLEEP AND SUNSCREEN(all of which I went without @ the festival). Here are the top 10ish reasons why FRFF was the crazy wonderful time that it was for me: 12. Audrey and Rick's travelling minstrel show. It made me cry. 11. Lazyboy. Funky Disco B-Ville remix.GITC. NO KOS. Man Eating Tents. Cheryl Wheeler/Vance Gilbert/Nields/EFO/.... 10. Lori, Traci, Luelli, Vali, Angi, Jeni, Mindi, Ani, Brandi, Lizzi...yeah y'all know who you are and why I now have to spell my name Debbi as well... 9. The monopoly money that we used to buy food. Well, that *most* of us used to buy food. And why, may I ask, were the booths all closed whenever I was hungry(say @ around, oh, 1am-5am??) 8. Our insanely intense *camping experience*...hot showers, heated pool, car phone, stereo, falafel, wild rain orgy...damn us fruheads are a *wild* bunch;) 7. Mindy*X*. Mike. Anna. Luella. Trace. Val. Lori. Pixel. I don't know why, but y'all crack me up so much:) 'X's all around! *(HUG)* 6. Nutella. Cruella. and __________'s pimpy bum. 5. I thought you we're @ least 21!"-Brandie:) (MindyJ presents Jian with a tiny hot pink tshirt we found on the floor)"Hey Jian, did you lose your shirt?" 4. My car. It caused great enjoyment and stress. And many weird stares cruising down the highway with Pixel's fab LBC's all over it. What a Trip it has Beeeen:) 3. The wonderful people at the lost and found who all but dragged me to the infirmary just because I was flushed. Welcome to pale skin in sunny July... 2. Actual Conversation:(setting 3:30am ontop of my car) Mikey:(walks up to me, Mike Wood and Luella sitting ontop of my car, star watching in the wee hours of Sunday morning. He's completely toasted, in the illegal way.)"Hey guys. Guess what. Someone stole my bowl and my buds from my tent. Can I score some boo off you?" Luella/Ginger:(rolls eyes, stiffles giggles)"Sorry, no. We're trippin on acid." Mikey: "Hey, that's cool. Guess how old I am!" Me: "um...27?...no?...15?" Mikey: "No man! I'm FOURTEEN man!...And I've got beeeeeeer!" Me: "What kind of beer buddy?" Mikey: "Caaaanaaaadiaaaaan beer! Look! It's got a Canadian flag on it and it says 'Canada'. It's Canadian beer man. Canadian beer. From Canada." Me: "So basically, you're telling me that if I put a Canadian flag brand on my ass and wrote 'Canadian' on my chest, then I'd be a Canadian?" Mikey: "My friend has a clit ring." 1. THE ANI FANS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (more)...oh. And the hills. We had six tents and a dining canopy in a semi-circle on the very top of the upper hill in the quiet area and with the exception of the "drumming guys" it was really ok. I think because there were enough of us to take up a good amount of space we were protected from feeling too crowded. All of the people we met were really nice and helpful and the staff really seemed to be doing whatever they could to make people comfortable. I would recommend more than 4 men's and 4 women's showers for over 20,000 people, but hey, the rain rinsed (and cooled) us off. My insistance that we go see Eddie From Ohio ("Eddie Who?") drew snickers and sideways looks from some of our 15-16 year old charges who I feared were too conditioned from their top 40 high school environment (similar to what some of you guys have been complaining about...) to loosen up, but I was elated when they came on and everybody LOVED them. They loved them enough to buy CDs and T-shirts. Then they loved the Neilds, and they really loved Fruvous. The Saturday workshop was great even though it was only 2 songs, and Sunday was a great show even though we were baking on the hill. It may have been the first Frushow I've seen where they didn't play KOS (I didn't miss it). I don't think I've ever seen Mike so animated, the heat didn't seem to be bothering him at all. The other "adults" were anxious to get on the road so despite whining from me and the rest of our crew we left right after the Sunday main stage show. I'm now charged with bringing a ton of stuff for the former Fruvirgins now turned Frufans likely to become Fruheads to get signed for them at Milestones. I can't wait! Speaking of Milestones - we've got tickets but we just discovered a couple of off-line Rochester Fruheads who didn't get to them quickly enough so if anyone has a catastrophe before August 10 and ends up with any extra tickets, please email me and I know two people who would be eternally grateful. If i got asked what my fav band was, i would say "moxy fruvous" to which i would receive the omnipresent retort, "huh?? what kind of music does that frügis band play?" at which point I'd pause, contemplate an answer, then just heave a sigh and say, "forget it... they are just different." and that would be the end of that. >i play a few songs, if >they don't like it, tough, if they do, great. Meanwhile the other two friends were bored stiff and wanted to wander around the park before the show was even over. There was no hope for them, they both listened to (and still do) KISS 98.5,the number one (s)hit music station and the like. Anyway, i had a point... to me, its like you either love them or dont, and there doesnt seem to be a grey (U.S. gray) area. but im pretty sure that thread has been done! - -jen the cheese === ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Behold the power of cheese" - -American Dairy Association's slogan ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? This was WAY cool, although I kinda missed the accordian. Dave's keyboard made the song sound completely different (anyone, please, what WAS that little recurring theme? I know I recognized it but I don't know why) and the added harmonies smoothed the song a bit, taking away some of the harshness that's kept this song out of my personal Top Ten Faves. The disco portion was just a happy bonus. I'd love to see this version of the song done in a club while everyone was standing, since I don't think an overly hot, seated festival venue was a fair trial for this new arrangement. I wanted to jump! > > Related, I was surprised by the fact that their set didn't seem more, > well, folk-y, considering the folk-y nature of the folk festival. The more recent shows I've seen just don't seem as "tailored" for each venue as they once were, to the point where a festival celebrating Toronto includes a song about American politics (must Michi be played EVERYWHERE? Wouldn't Marion have been more appropriate?) and I was really, really hoping to hear Blow Wind Blow or similar festival fare. Thank goodness for Killer Tents and the always-lovely My Poor Generation. Oh, how I wish you'd packed up and moved down by us! It was dead quiet during most of the shows, so even if I was too sunned out to see some of the bands I certainly heard 'em well enough. Kris and I picked a convenient spot for Thrsday night (since it was after 1 when we pitched our tents) but moved to the Loristeve area on Friday. There was space! The only real problem was the Screamer Next Door and even he couldn't keep me from my appointed naps. I was actually disappointed that the people around us weren't louder, or at least more musically inclined. I slept through Audrey and Rick, unfortunately. I'm especially disappointed that I didn't get to see you, Ken and Scott! > Anyway, got back around 5:30, just in time to catch the Vance Gilbert > "performance skills critique". I kind of > feel bad for people up on stage, but they seemed to enjoy Vance making fun > of them as much as we did! This was a great workshop! Vance's wit is amazing, and I loved his comments on each performance. He handed out a fair share of compliments, too, making each criticism easier to swallow. Some of his tips were so dead-on they left me speechless: speaking a few lines instead of singing, strumming the guitar in a softer way, using facial expressions and glances to form a bond with the audience, and so on. Vance is always a kick to watch. While I'm on workshops, I haveta throw in my typical negative remarks somewhere. The Rolling in the Aisles workshop was great, but what WERE the organizers thinking when they put six acts on one stage? I won't comment much on Laurie's performance (sorry, forgot her last name..the story lady) but it could definitely have been left out. Terry Kitchen was better, but his songs were too long for such a crowded workshop. The workshop would have been SO much better with only four acts! Did anyone else catch Cheryl Wheeler yawning? It would have been great if she'd been able to get in another song. Her Republican song had me doing just what the title of the workshop suggested, in between bursts of spontaneous applause for her biting political satire. Thank goodness Fruvous's Rush Limbaugh gave Cheryl the inspiration to play that song. It was worth the wait while she figured out what key to use. Set Lists (probably not in the correct order) Saturday Workshop "Love Songs of the Millenium" I Love My Boss Beware the Killer Tents ~The tents are coming over the hill We thought they were inanimate But now they're set to kill~ Dave apparently wrote this song within two days of the festival, and included many of the acts participating this past weekend. The only ones who were going to survive the carnage were those bands who weren't invited, and those whose names were hard to rhyme. The lads survived because they cut a deal with the tents and made them the King of Spain. Murray forgot his lines, causing all the lads to look at each other trying to figure out whose turn it was to sing a verse, and then flubbed Stacey Earle's name into Traci Earle ( or Tracy, Tracey, Tracie for the non-biased reader) *grin* Sunday Mainstage set: Half As Much Splatter Splatter IWHO Video Bargainville - New arrangement, and it rocked!!! I simply adore it. No accordian as Dave was on the keyboard. It had a disco beat with some early 80's synth-pop influence. Amazing. Teletubbies!~ Greatest Man in America Note: Susan Werner performed a hilarious filk of "Do Re Mi" from the Sound of Music that was all about the stock market. ~When you sing you begin with do re mi To make money you begin with NYSE~ Random Memories: The band Future Chicken Farmers entertained those of us in the two hour shower line by performing as they waited for showers. Great fun. Audrey and Rick (fellow fans of fruvous) wandered around Friday night with guitar in hand, and stopped by Camp Lori Steve to entertain us with they're original songs. A wonderful ending to our first day at Falcon Ridge. When the heavens opened up and treated us to high winds and a torrential downpour Saturday, it wound up being a fun, bad weather bonding experience as 9 fruheads relaxed in Lori & Steve's tent. Unfortunately, the clouds then burned off and the temp went back up to 150 degrees F. By Sunday, the Slush Puppies for sale were more puppy than slush, but at least they were cold and wet. Although there were an estimated 20,000 people on hand for the Saturday sets by Cry, Cry, Cry and Ani, most of those were daytrippers and were not competing for the 4 showers per gender the next morning. Thank goodness for small favors. It is possible to fit 10 sweaty fruheads on one blanket. I wouldn't recommend trying this at home though. The personal space value was minus three. It is a good thing we all liked each other :-) On Saturday, Jian sported a Brittany Spears t-shirt. He claimed it had something to do with the "new, emerging feminist movement." Color me skeptical. I'm not making this up. I guess we can put him down as not wanting a kick in the head. Finally, I'd like to thank everyone who made this past weekend a wonderful experience.
