I believe the lyrics you are referring to are these: "Now my pretty fair miss If it wasn't for the law, You and I in a bed might lie Roll me over next to the wall" The girl is the nobleman's daughter and shouldn't marry beneath her station apparently, and the Captain is hardly the same rank as her, being a sailor. I dunno, but it makes a nice song. :) Maybe the girl is trying to justify sleeping with him by making him solve her riddles, as in fairy tales and greek myths and such, so that, even though he is only a sailor, he has proven his worth to her, at least. This is one of those GBS songs that I like the song better without listening too carefully to the lyrics, although many of GBS's songs have great lyrics. Yum GBS. I liked the band, and I had just gotten a CD gift-certificate, so I decided to go out and buy this "Moxy..um, mom, what was their name again?" band's CD--Bargainville. I had no knowledge of any of their other CD's, and I didn't want them. I wanted Bargainville--and I would've gotten B'ville had I known what the cover looked like instead of that it just had BJ and KoS. I ended up getting Live Noise instead, and I am sure, that if I had gotten B'ville I wouldn't be in love with MF, and I would be somebody who has just heard B'ville. Also, many of my friends who I have tried to introduce to Fruvous only recall songs on B'ville such as BJ, KoS and Spiderman. So, to answer your question, which I have take entirely too much space for, people *are* still only acquainted w/B'ville, and would be much more happier at a concert if they played KoS--and given what they usually like along w/KoS, they will like to hear GE&H. She's also made it into a one-woman show, which I caught on PBS a couple years back. It's her telling of the 65-or- so jobs she's had, from waitress at many restaurants to legal proofreader to receptionist at a whorehouse. It's tragic and hilarious, with a message we'd all do well to remember: All people deserve respect, no matter what they happen to be doing for a living. This I agree with. If you've heard a song too many times, and think they should retire it, maybe you should just skip a show. The set list isn't for *us* specifially, it's for the whole crowd. And people like KOS. As long as the band still enjoys it as well, I think it's unfair for people to insinuate they should stop playing it just because you've heard it a few too many times for your liking. As for me, I'm up to 6 shows, and I still look forward to King of Spain. It was the first fruvous song that I *loved*. Also, I know that whatever newbie I happen to have with me at that point will always enjoy it. >>Remember, for each show you stay home, someone else can buy the ticket you would have bought & see the band for the first time or the first time in a while.<< This was actually my thought way back when the whole Troc debacle went down. Playing multiple nights at the TLA is *not* the same as playing one sold-out show at the Troc, because garunteed the TLA crowd will have many repeat customers (myself most likely included-- I'm not absolved of guilt here), and therefore less people would get to see them. I suppose this is just a glorified "me too" post, but I thought a lot of the criticisms that were being voiced weren't exactly justified. ~jen - -- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Nobody likes you when you're 23." --Blink 182 "Do you know that you are very strong?"-- Grover "Measure your life in love."-- Rent Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Share what you know. Is anyone else confused with these "so-and-so" songs? Well, I'm not confused, but I'm the one you quote at the end who said most of this. I've seen a lot of Fruvous shows. After awhile, personal writing styles show through a bit more when listening and to me it gets easier to tell where songs come from. For example, the Drinking Song was written by Dave. I didn't know that at first and had no reason to question it by after a couple months of seeing more Frushows than humanly possible, I got the feeling the song was written by Dave. I did my research and found out it was in fact written by Dave. There have been a handful of songs that have been performed live for a bit only to dissappear from the live show. Heetseeker Boy for example. To me, these songs were still decent excursions into songwriting, but they just didn't make magic with the whole band. They stayed songs by their original writer. Get Down From There is one. I thought at first My Poor Generation was another until it was performed incredibly well full band months after I first heard it. Each of the four guys in Fruvous more than like have their own songwriting lives outside of the band. I know for sure Fordy does and I'm gonna guess the others do too since they are so creative on stage and van rides get long and boring and you can only do crosswords and make up card games for so many hours a day. Anyways, I'd be more than happy to discuss Dave song or Murray songs or Mike songs if anyone wants to. It just seems their are a preponderance of people on the ng who like to talk about Jian, not that there is anything wrong with that. Speaking of which, you know what I'd love to see someday? A pseudo-album, a little like a full-length B Album, which features just solo songs from the guys. A lot of bands have members branch off to do solo work on their own, but that doesn't seem like a Fruvous thing to do. A compilation CD of all their solo stuff together would seem more in character. I say this because there are some *incredible* songs, some which we've heard and some I'm sure we haven't -- I'm afraid these will never be available to the "public".
