No one knows who they are, not even the clerks at used CD stores that carry them! Most clerks were never aware that they had some CD by some off-the-wall Canadian band that they'd never heard of. I don't think Fruvous has done the "long" Green Eggs and Ham since last October, in Kentucky. I have a tape of that show--the first time I'd heard the full version--and frankly, I was disappointed. I was expecting something great. Maybe it's an in-person thing that doesn't translate well to a recording. I don't know. I know I'm not the only fan who's left a little cold by the long GE&H. The bass adds so much in terms of pacing that the song seems naked and flat without it. No, the short version isn't like the old version on the indie tape, which the long version more closely resembles, but I happen to think it's more dynamic; plus, I'm a sucker for that driving beat. One thing I've noticed about Fruvous when they pull out songs they don't really perform any more, the songs can sound a little tired, as if they don't quite know what to do with them. I've never really notices this as they're being played, but on listening to a recording of 10-30-98 a few months later, I thought Fell in Love sounded weird. It had been a while since they'd played it, brought it out for a special occasion and although it was very moving in the moment, listening to it a second time gave me pause: I actually preferred the Bargainville version. That never happens with Fruvous for me! What does that mean? Should Fruvous shake-up its setlists more often? I see a lot of touring bands, and they each do something different to keep the shows fresh. It's as much to keep themselves interested as keeping fans on their toes, I guess. At this point, Fruvous does a lot of talking on stage. They improvise some, and when a thing works they tuck it into a repetoire. The show almost never seems pat, but some individual bits get old. My favorite GE&H was at the Bottom Line last year, first set 1-1, when they did "Seuss on 45" in response to a request shouted from the audience. The version in hyperdrive, complete with on-time reactions from a few members of the audience. *snort* I enjoy GE&H, but lately I prefer King>Darlington. I *still* think the King could use a rest, but that's just me. Anybody care to discuss justifications for keeping King in the show on a night-after-night basis? It's a crowd pleaser, but Fruvous has a lot of crowd pleasers. I guess my point is that Fruvous has matured to a certain extent, but they still work within a similar framework as they've been in for a while now. Some bands never break out of their original box, and I think Fruvous is better than that. Are they keeping themselves in the "great harmonies, funny-ha-ha songs" box for a reason? I'm not being as harsh as it seems, really. I remain a fan, I can't see anything changing that, but I'd like to see them push their envelope again. I think the new songs show that they can. I guess this makes me not a new fan any more, hmm. - --Amanda "I don want your crummy food or your freaky love!" --Mr. Mental "The Tick: Devil in Diapers" Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Share what you know. Fruvous does an incredible job of changing their setlists considering the position they are in. This is a band who has to balance their sets between satisfying insanely devoted fans who see 20+ shows per year and new fans who may have only heard Bargainville. These new fans came to see KoS/GE&H. The guys are also promoting a new album (i realise we all know this). They know that we're going to buy Thornhill the day it comes out (or, like me, wait until 8/24 & buy it in Canada), but a few hundred Fruheads does not a gold record make. More fans have to be brought in & the only way they will go to a show is if they know they're going to hear what they want (KoS/GE&H). The other half of that promotion is making sure the potential fans hear what is on Thornhill. There are 2 ways to accomplish this: radio play (which isn't a reliable source w/ Fruvous) or play songs from the album at shows (which brings us back to "repetitive" set lists). But, what about the Fruheads... those who see a show on average of once a week (or so it seems)? Why do you see Fruvous? Is it for the variety of music? If it is, maybe see them less often so that variety is still fresh -- so you aren't seeing the same songs over & over again. Remember, for each show you stay home, someone else can buy the ticket you would have bought & see the band for the first time or the first time in a while. Perhaps they will enjoy the show & see something they haven't seen before, rather than complain about how the each concert sounds the same. - -Amy, putting on her flameproof suit & holding on tight. *obligatory .sig* Snow In Summer mka Amy Brunner "You're quasi-evil Scott.
