Then Tuesday night I pick up Friday's paper, which I never got around to reading, and spot that Eddie From Ohio will be playing the Mercury Lounge in the city [1] the following day (ie, Wednesday, last night...) I started typing this and it got really long, but suffice to say, 5:30 on Wednesday night, when it becomes apparent I will *not* actually have to stay late as expected at work, I decide to just jump in the car and go. By *myself*--this being so sudden and all-- in my work clothes, with not even a purse to put my wallet in, with no one even knowing where I am (not the brightest penny in the pond, am I?). But I go, because of all you people. [2] The opening act was a very cool little outfit called the paperboys--kinda a cross between bluegrass and riverdance. I offer no opinion there, but feel free to talk amongst yourselves ;-) EFO took the stage soon after, to accompanyment of much cheers from several obviously fervent fans--I could relate ;-) And you know what--you people have good taste. SO there ya go, Genna-- one show, three ammf-ers identified. An auspicious start, indeed! ;-) As for my spare change on this subject, I *also* wasn't going to jump in on this, but often the little voice in my head that tells me not to post has a strong speech impediment that makes it difficult for my brain to process the message (either that or I just ignore it ;-). Anyway, I don't think the *ng* has cliques, at all... I think there are probably some cliques that exist among the fans, as is evidenced from the inside jokes that fly round here, but as someone who reads here fairly regularly, I couldn't tell you much about any of these cliques, which just goes to show they don't rear thier head here much. Probably the people who perceive the cliques on the ng are just aware of them in real life, and project that knowledge onto the posts they read. As for me, I'm firmly in the Angie camp on this one. I just tend to not talk much around people I don't know. (At least that's my perception of it. The 2 or 3 people here who have met me may have other ideas...) You wouldn't find me sharing a roadtrip with a person I'd never met from here, or crashing on their living room floor after a show...It's just a shyness thing. (this *was* "the Angie camp," right?? ;-) But knowing this, I'm not upset if I'm not included in a "clique," or no newsgrouper buys me cake for my birthday, or nods an inside joke my way in a sig file here. I'd *like* to get to know as many of you as possible; whether or not I will remains to be seen, but I don't begrudge any of you the friendships you've made, or the right to post about them in the context of shows or road trips or what have you. I've had a parallel experience before, where I was on a mailing list for a long time where there was a *definite* clique (and a very sarcastic one, I might add). Eventually I unsubbed and found a message board devoted to the same topic, and now count *those* poeple among my best friends. We see each aother regularly, and have tons o' fun together. We became the clique for awhile, so I've been on both sides, and obviously a person's perception of a clique depends on their inclusion in it. But I think if there are any cliques here, they're kept out of this forum fairly well, and if we stop TALKING them to death, all will be well again ;-) ~jen (who acknowledges the irony that that nice, neat solution came after 5 rather verbose paragraphs on the subject ;-) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Nobody likes you when you're 23"-- Blink 182 "Do you know that you are very strong?"-- Grover "Measure your life in love."--Rent ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 09 Jul 1999 07:02:57 GMT From: Swoop-Dot-Loop Subject: Re: The AMMF Profile In article <7m386d$ova$1@nnrp1.deja.com>, Swoop-Dot-Loop wrote: > I'll warn you, I'm skipping some questions... Seen the Lads perform 66 different songs (and that’s NOT counting the short renditions of ‘O Canada’ in Ithaca and the ‘Hockey Night in Canada’ theme in Toronto…) Earned 13 Frümiles stamps… (o: Stayed with 2 people (Früspace!) I’d only met on the Internet Slept on a hide-a-bed, a floor, and two chairs pushed together (thank goodness I’m vertically challenged) Stayed with 4 strangers (and snuck into the hotel!) in a Canadian city that I’d never been to Seen Organ Grinder!!!!!!!!!! Learned the distinction between a pot and a tureen Sang King of Spain in a coffee shop, on a Denver sidewalk, on a crowded shuttle bus… Ascertained that it IS possible to sing a 190-word song in a minute and 16 seconds Realized that August 10 takes FOREVER to get here!!!!! Pondered the reality (IMHO) that Früvous album rejects are better than 95% of what I hear on Denver radio Wished I lived in Philadelphia so I could have WXPN Been introduced to The Nields, Guster, Great Big Sea, Arrogant Worms, Tory Cassis, Susan Werner, Jess Klein, Dan Bern and Eddie From Ohio Rekindled my interest in They Might Be Giants, Elvis Costello and the Talking Heads Rekindled my hatred for the Philadelphia Flyers… (o: (yeah, yeah, I know I’ll take some flak for THAT one…) Seen It’s Too Cold!!!!!!!!!! Been called a groupie (more than once) by my mother Had the time of my life… To sum it all up, I often think about something Donna said to me in Ann Arbor last month… she had this little epiphany after the shows there: “You know… I was thinking about something during the show tonight… I realized that I get so caught up in what songs they’re going to play, and who’s going to say what, and what improvs they’ll do, and whether or not they’ll play my request, and who’s going to be there, and who’s going to be taping the show, that I lose sight of how good these guys are. Too often we forget just to sit back and listen… and this band is the best thing going right now.” Donna, that is WAY paraphrased, so if I didn’t get the gist of your statement, I apologize… but I have a feeling that I know EXACTLY what you meant… (o: So, just a plea to all the Früvous fans out there… don’t forget how lucky we are. We have a band that is talented beyond belief. We have a band that appreciates us as a solid fan base. We have a band that KNOWS we follow them around like obsessive psychotics, yet STILL isn’t afraid of us. We have a band that cares so much about us (“the people!”) that they change the setlist every night. We have a band that lives or dies (to an extent) by our support, and the support we bring by “converting” our friends, families, and neighbors. We have a band with an incredibly cute bass player...*g*. We have a band that can pull off playing an entire show of cover tunes! We have a band that manages to appease fans who’ve seen ‘em dozens of times while at the same time ‘wowing’ Früvous virgins. We have a band that WILL play requests… if you pester ‘em long enough… We have a band that is NOT jaded… who mingle with the fans after the shows, and who read our reviews of those same shows. We have a band that causes our friends and families to think we’re totally insane. We have a band that has brought many of us together and created some very strong, lasting friendships. Every time I think about what Moxy Früvous has brought into my life… well, first of all I tell myself to quit being SILLY, it’s just a band!!! But then I realize… it’s NOT just a band. It’s a whole group of people that I have come to adore. It’s a phenomenon. Früheadism… the eighth wonder of the world! And methinks I’ve babbled on long enough.
