I say seemingly because I don't believe that it is intentional. From what I have seen, most everybody here is pretty well dedicated to the idea of inclusiveness--at least in their minds. In practice it doesn't always work out that way. At this time this community has grown to the point where there are GROUPS of friends. Chemistry issues aside, we can't all be good friends, because there are just too many of us and nobody could handle the maintanence of that many relationships. Therefore we tend to settle into groups. Now to the relative newcomer or indeed any "outsider" those groups can look mighty cliquish. I don't believe that they mean to be, but like a fertilized egg, as they become established, the shell gets thicker and harder to penetrate (How's THAT for a metaphore!?) :) But the exclusiveness of a particular group of friends does not equal exclusiveness of the fruhead community. They are two different things. I mean think about it. If the COMMUNITY is cliquish, what constitutes "in" or "out?" The band certainly doesn't seem to play favorites. They work very hard to meet new people at every show. (That is part of the JOB for them). So if someone--Chad say (since he is so notoriously exclusionary and clicquish.)--were to tell you that you don't know crap about Murray's latest base-line since you weren't at the special 4 course dinner that the band threw for its REAL fans last week, just ignore him. He is not the arbiter of who can be a fan, and probably is more "out" than you are, (whatever that means) since he is trying so hard to be "in." [1] As has been repetedly pointed out, no group of fans "owns" the band. You can be just as much of a fruhead whether or not you belong to a particular sub-group (or groups, since they intertwine). If one hangs around here long enough, one is bound to make some good friends oneself, and then that person will find themselves at the center of one of these so-called exclusive groups. As far as owning the band goes, some people sometimes think they know what the band thinks about something. They feel that they have been "around" enough to have an insight. Sometimes that is correct, sometimes it is a load of horseshit. Jian said at the last frucon "Of course you speak for the band" His point was that there are some topics where most of us are pretty tuned in to what is up with the band, and so if somebody asks about taking pictures at shows, any of us should be able to say with some authority that the band is generally ok with photography as long as there is no flash used. OTOH, this CAN be taken too far. Sometimes in their zeal, people can believe that they are more tuned into the band and its members than they really are (or than anyone reasonably would be). Mike, Dave, Jian, and Murray are all very complex people, who have many other sides to them than the ones that they regularly use in the shows. I don't need to know any of them personally to know that--it is basic. Because of that, I find it to be a good practice when thinking about what they might think to throw in a healthy dose of words and phrases such as "seemingly," "I imgagine," "perhaps," and "pesumably." It helps me keep from fooling myself into thinking I know something that I merely surmise. A.J. [1] Note this is a fictitious Chad we are talking about here--used for the sake of argument. I'm trying to figure out a way to get to Falcon Ridge (upstate NY) and it's proving really difficult logistically. Best I've been able to do at the moment is a flight to Midway on Friday afternoon, July 23rd. Does anyone know an easy, efficient way to get from there to upstate NY??? Flights look impossible--mostly because of limited service from Midway to points east. Is there an easy way to get across town to O'Hare at rush hour? I know, that's a silly question. Would I be better off flying to Kansas City? This all sounds rather impossible, considering that neithre Kansas nor Illinois are anywhere close to Falcon Ridge. Thanks for the help and advice. HOWEVER... i don't see it as an attempt to discourage newcomers. i see it as a bunch of people who've gotten acquainted by attending several früshows together. it's natural that when people get to know each other that well, some fraternal posting is going to happen. folks, you don't HAVE to read EVERY post! i don't. and i sincerely hope that ANY newcomer doesn't feel ignored, or out of the loop, or whatnot. when i first discovered the ng, i lurked for a while. it helps you get into what's going on. and as i said, i post occasionally... mostly reviews. i *love* to write reviews, and i've gotten comments from *many* people that they love to read them. thanks to those people... you know who you are... but i digress... PLEASE don't feel ignored, or that you're on the outside looking in on some huge früvous community. these people (ng posters/lurkers & früvous concertgoers) have welcomed me with *very* open arms, and i feel that the same would hold true with anybody who is civil and kind in return. as for the perception that you're better accepted into the "group" if a band member is chummy with you... bulls**t. and, yes, i speak from my own personal experience, so i'm sure there will be those of you out there who disagree. that's fine. disagree. disagree to your heart's content!!! some of you guys know i tend to get a little mushy at times... so here goes: this group of fans is unlike any other group i've ever encountered. i've stayed with total strangers who were willing to take me in so i could save money on my frütripping. i've met people in line/at concerts who were friendly to me just because i was *there*. and at *no* time did ANYONE EVER say, 'well, you didn't talk to *insert band member here* tonight, so i really don't want to associate with you...'. i rarely even post anything anymore that relates to any conversation i have with a band member. i prefer to keep that stuff to myself. i don't use it as a way to get in with the 'A' crowd. yes, i am being facetious... now, i know there are those of you out there who *haven't* met any ng posters, or even been to a show. we still welcome you, with high hopes that you will soon have many many chances to see a früvous show and meet us (the ng posters). this IS NOT a clique!!! we have had the responsibility put upon us to spread the früvous word. it's unofficially our job. früvous *isn't* on MTV (and i, for one, hope that they continue to prefer life that way...) and although some of you are luckier than i, i've never heard a früvous song on the radio. so with such a great responsibility to the band... *why* would we (früvous fans everywhere) so blatantly shirk our responsbility by shutting off people new to the band?!?!? thanks for letting me get some stuff off my chest. and patrick, i apologize AGAIN for denying you the opportunity to voice your feelings to a non-partisan group. i was wrong. and now i must get back to work before i find myself without a job... ;o) === over 'n' out xoxoxo bridget "Dave Matheson's banjo, Mike Ford's artwork... and Murray's a great guy!!" ~Jian, 6/16/99 _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
