So yeah we won the War of 1812, but that has little to >do with >Canada. Canada was never the big issue. Quite right, from the Yankee point of view -- we were attacking what is now Canada, but then was a British colony, because it was the closest and most convenient place in which to harass the Brits, not necessarily because we were trying to take it over. One can, however, understand Canadians being a little off-put by the suggestion that we didn't want "them". The point is, northern friends, Upper and Lower Canada were not a separate sovereign nation then, but a nearby colonial pawn to use in pressing our point with the Brits -- if they launched spot attacks on citizens of our very weak, fledgling nation, we struck back at "you", who were then "them", in order to persuade them that their policies on the high seas were more trouble to them than they were worth. York (now TO), in Upper Canada, and other points where former American colonists loyal to the Brits settled during and post the 1776 uprising, just happened to be more logistically favorable than setting off across the Atlantic to besiege London :). Hence the understandable sentiment of Upper-Canada loyalists that the Americans were pursuing them, not letting them determine their own allegiance even after they left the 13 rebellious colonies for one more amenable to their pro-Mother-England sentiments. Anyway, yes Americans did lose a whole bunch of battles in what is now Canada during the War of 1812, but the battles weren't an attempt to annex any parts of Canada so much as a tactical maneuver designed to annoy the hell out of the Brits. We accomplished that objective. In turn, we backed off harassing Upper Canada -- which we really *didn't* want, not because it wasn't a wonderful beautiful place, but because we could barely administer and defend our own territory at that point, much less expand it further against the wishes of the loyalist locals. So the Canadians-to-be won, from their pov, because we didn't take 'em over, and the Americans won, from their pov, because we got the Brits to leave our sailors the hell alone, which really was our objective. And we all lived happily ever after ... Well, until the Finian raids, anyway. - -- Lori, a Yankee in Canada on the Fourth of July :) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 02 Jul 1999 15:08:07 GMT From: trace@frumail.org (Trace) Subject: Re: We are getting very picky these days. I see this group falling >into a pit of conveniences. Well, as for the quoting issues, sometimes it makes a great deal of difference. It is a pretty standard convention on Usenet for replies to contain the esscence of the quoted material, but not *ALL* of the quoted post, unless the person is replying to the entire post. We are fairly tolerant of these things, and haven't become snappish about it, but it is a good thing to know about since other newsgroups a person might subscribe to may become snappish about the issue themselves. When we tell posters about this, we are in fact educating them on standard procedure throughout Usenet, but trying to do it in a nice way. As for snipping an entire post, that creates problems for other users. Everyone does not get posts in the order that they've been submitted, some news servers are rather slow, and it is not uncommon for someone to download a *reply* before the original post has become available. This is downright confusing when the reply contains no reference to the original post, hence the need for *some* relevant quotation. >I thought we were supposed to be friends, the real >kind, the kind of friendship you have to work at.
