Some of you don't know me, I've been hiding under a rock for quite some time now, but as I read through 500 or so back posts, as I do once every few weeks, I realized that we are a lot more critical of each other than we used to be. I can remember days when I was happy to see new posts, even of they were of the "me too" variety of which Nate was protesting. I was always happy just to know that someone else was out there. Perhaps we forget the beauty of this thing we have, this little group of friends that we all keep in the backs of our heads as we go through our daily lives. I for one can think of 30 some odd people I could go to with a problem, outside my daily life, and I think that is wonderful. Our individual idiosyncrasies should be seen as gifts and wonders, not as annoyances, or sources of irritation. I mean, does it really matter if someone quotes the whole post or part of the post? Yea, it might be inconvenient for some, but I think it's better than no post at all. I see this group falling into a pit of conveniences. I thought we were supposed to be friends, the real kind, the kind of friendship you have to work at. I feel that by putting conditions and rules all over the place, we are cheapening the friendships we all work so hard to make and keep. I love you all. The yous that I know and the yous that I don't know. I don't want to be attacked for this, that wasn't my paint at all. Of course everyone is entitled to their opinion and their own comfort bubble, but sometimes I think we need to put our bubbles aside. I also know I shouldn't have used "we" in this post, because I do not speak for anyone but myself, but I felt that it was the easiest way to express my view on this group as a whole. I apologize if I stepped on any toes, I've been known to do that. However I would have to differ with you about the US winning. Winning a war is pretty much determined by how the combatants define victory. In battle simulation games this is known as victory conditions. (In some games, victory is even defined as not being wiped out for so many turns!) The US's main purpose in the 1812 war was to defend its sovereignty against British encroachment, not to conquer Canada. Specifically this had to do with the impressment into the Royal Navy of American sailors on the high seas. For the US, the victory conditions were to force the British to respect US sovereignty and to leave us the hell alone. For the British on the other hand, the war mostly represented an opportunity to reclaim some of the huge losses of the American revolution. Viewed in this light, the US clearly was the victor in 1812 even though the actual war was a draw. Britain stopped pressing American sailors, and never again openly challenged US sovereignty. For their part, the English got... basically nothing they didn't already have. So yeah we won the War of 1812, but that has little to do with Canada. Canada was never the big issue. Before we all get excited talking about marketing strategy or whatnot, let's remember that there are TWO different record companies involved here. Given that, why would you expect the discs to be released the same day in both the US and Canada? Maybe there is some grand plan to hit the US first because of the larger potential market, or maybe those are just the dates that the two companies independently selected as workable for them. Not everything is an anti-Canadian conspiracy you know! (just some things!) :) A.J. - -- Mariaweb last updated 5/13/99. See Maria Louise in all her... erm... Glory? I've been lurking since Ann Arbor, too, but can't pass up the opportunity to welcome you! I was introduced to MF at Christmas 98 by a nephew who'd heard them on MP-3 and bought the Live Noise CD. My daughter immediately bought the same CD and now has them all. I really enjoyed this group as so many of their songs reflect my feelings and opinions on things. (I'm a wide-eyed idealist, in spite of the reality surrounding us.) The one true passion in my daughter's life became that of seeing the band live. I'd never seen her get so excited about anything before! She started to play MF's music for all her friends and to really push for anything related in any sort of way. I couldn't help but get infected by her enthusiasm, and in fact listened to MF day, night, in the car, anywhere we were in proximity to any device that would play a tape or a CD. She and a friend finally WORE ME DOWN about going to Michigan--this was a jaunt for us from Iowa (though people come from further--like Colorado!) in a not-so-reliable car at a time of unemployment! But it was worth every cent and silent prayer that the car would hold out! There were just too many good omens that I couldn't pass it up. We had a DEVIL of a time trying to get tickets--and one Josh (I think) Novratil solved that by getting us tickets for the first night. I had my doubts, being a mom and hearing all the horror stories about "things" that can happen over the Internet! But Maria convinced me that Frufans are wonderful and everyone is great. She was right! We only had tickets for the first night, and I was tempted to leave the next day, but the girls convinced me to stay and try to get tickets the second day. So we waited in line and were fortunate to get tickets for them quite a bit before the show. I was going to find some place to hang out and wait for them, having used up all my cash. Then this wonderful Frufan right behind us in line (none other than Vincent!) offered to _give_ me the cash to attend the concert with them! I took it as a loan, as by then I couldn't think of anywhere I'd rather be than at that concert. Again, it was great! I became a dedicated frufan myself! I think it's great that this band can reach across so many age groups (which often create barriers rather than bridges). I was far from the only person my age there (which had been one of my fears--was I going to be an old fogey that would stick out like a sore thumb??) I was NOT, and it was great to see that other people attended as families with children. I think that speaks well for the overall appeal of MF. Their music has created a bond for me and my daughter and her friends that other "popular" music has not. (Not that it would necessarily because Maria doesn't "get into" much of that other stuff, though her tastes are very eclectic.) I just couldn't resist finally posting to this board when I saw that Vincent had, since he's such a big part of our experience in Ann Arbor. I have enjoyed my "lurking" for the past few weeks, and will probaby crawl back into that hole and just enjoy the places this ng takes me. It's been a fun experience getting to know you all and to watch you banter back and forth. If you have serious suggestions on where the band should play in your area or in an area you know, please email moxy@passport.ca. This email goes to Jude at Moxy Fruvous HQ in Toronto and she can consume it or route to whomever should consume it. This is especially important for all you under 21 people who can never see shows in your area. Find an all ages place that is suitable for Fruvous and tell Jude about it and maybe things will start to change. But the decision to play there is a lot more complicated than "is the atmosphere right"? The place needs to hold enough people so that a lot of the people who want to get in can. It needs to pay reasonable and have a decent sound system. More or less, the place has to agree to fill the band's rider. Some or all of the above can be waived from time to time, but most of the time I'd guess management does booking and is more looking to protect the band and get them heard by more and more people than they are trying to make the atmosphere right. And in the PA/NJ area they have a whole lot of fans. I don't know if a bar is gonna be big enough. - Chad ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 02 Jul 1999 14:55:23 GMT From: Mindy J Munson Subject: yay!
