In defense of Kelly, I'd just like to point out that she specifically says "MTV's target audience is ignorant, conformist, 12-to-18 year olds..." She did *not* say all 12-18 year olds are ignorant and conformist. This seems to be the crux of the debate, and it is easy to straighten it out. She meant no offense to anyone who is not both ignorant and conformist, and happens to fall between the ages of 12-18 (she doens't mention the ignorant, conformist 18+ year olds, but that's another matter). An analogy would go something like this. "Mean people suck." That doesn't indicate that all people are mean and therefore suck. Just the percentage of mean ones do. :-) > >Früvous fans are, for the most part, not part of that target audience for >whatever reason. So we tend to >get a little (overly?) defensive about stuff... Very true veronica, i agree wholeheartedly. this is exactly the reason why i get defensive about this kind of thing. Somebody (i think jen?) mentioned that they feel that american culture is shared with the world and they dont have an identity, but to me, its kind of the other way around. As a canadian, its sometimes hard to see "our" identity, what with the artists, actors, etc who have to make it across the border if they dont, or even if they DO make their name here first. i was strongly proud and supportive of BNL, but when they made it huge in the US, it was like their canadian identity was ripped out from beneath them. now they are no longer "ours", and their identity as a "Canadian band" has vanished. I totally agree with and understand the Canadian mentality and defensivness, as it seems that every piece of our culture and aspects need also to be celebrated in America in order to make them important and relevant. As for not being able to recite any provinces or having knowledge of any other parts of the Canadian culture or history, i think this stems from the fact that America is such a huge country, geographically, population-wise and power-wise, and many americans feel they dont need to know anything about Canada, and that we are, indeed the 51st state, and just another piece of America. And with all the american culture we have thrust upon us, it is hard to dissociate! As Spirit of the West put it, "I am far too Canadian, I'm in a sorry state, won't you welcome to the sorry state." Believe me, i would LOVE to wake up tomarrow and never hear the name Bill Clinton again, and i would LOVE to ask the average american who our Prime Minister is and have them give me the right answer! But this will never happen, and THAT is what saddens me. This isnt just about the cd, because no, waiting two extra weeks is not going to kill me or suddenly take away Fruvous' canadian identity. i am just echoing Veronica's views and explaining why i get a little defensive about the whole issue. - -jen Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Share what you know.
