With Get in > the Car (14), King of Spain (20), Your New Boyfriend (6), BJ Don't Cry > (8), When She Talks (15), and I Will Hold On (16) rounding out my list. Ah, but each person is gonna have a completely different list than you! That's the hard part. As for the songs you mentioned, some of them have been played a lot, but not recently. Medicine Show was a staple of the 1997 spring->fall tour. Lazy Boy was in almost all of the Fall 1997 Your New Boyfriend tour, as was Fell in Love and a slowed down Your New Boyfriend. Stuck in the 90's comes out every so often, usually as a good surprise or when they play more than one gig in a city. Jenny Washington has never been performed as far as I know. Raja appeared a lot in the Your New Boyfriend tour as well, usually preceded with a Jian 10 minute talk about really whatever he feels like (Some Kind of Wonderful, the Riverfront Times story about the police setting up some kid, etc). Lazlo pops up rarely, so they can play it. It was in the set lists in early 1997. Cedric Fruvous has been performed once as far as I know and that was that Frucon I where the guys performed some rarities some of which have graced live sets afterwards (Love Set Fire, Poor Napoleon) and some of which were just dusted off once (Gord's Gold, Cedric Fruvous, Photosynthesis). Josh Woodward did tour stats for the Your New Boyfriend tour which was the tour that was recorded for Live Noise. Check out his stats and compare to yours and you'll see how Fruvous set contents change over time not just from show to show but from tour to tour. This accomodates both style of fans. The one city Fruvous fan who goes to each and every show in their city and cheers and recommends the band to their friends and neighbors loves the complete mixup from tour to tour. The follow-the-band-to-where-ever-the-hell-they-go fans appreciate the mixups between each night of the same tour. They know they are gonna hear some of the same songs, but they also know there are gonna be 5 or 6 treats that will make the travelling worth it. Josh's Tour Stats are at for the Your New Boyfriend tour: http://www.dc-adnet.com/joshw/ynb/ > So my solution: More Variety. I know they have to play King of Spain and > Johnny Saucep'n every time, but Michigan Militia? Horseshoes? surely fans > don't _require_ these every concert. I dunno. I guess this is personal preference. But I think what they do now is great. Coming up with completely different set lists for each show in a tour is a lot to ask. Dusting off a couple oldies is a good thing for a one-on-one request. It works eventually (what, we've heard Bittersweet twice now? Well, I've heard Bittersweet twice now *grin*). - Chad ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Jun 1999 14:40:31 -0400 From: Nate DeRose Subject: Re: Ann Arbor Offer #3. But always as an encore -- which I suspect is why it doesn't make it onto some posted setlists and thus not into the "stats".) >It's one of the songs I always play for people who've never heard them - and >maybe this just says a lot about who my friends are more than anything else - >it the song that most consistantly makes the strongest impression. ditto. so it's not just your friends. >**Aside: Say you meet someone's who's never heard of the lads (perish the >thought!) but they're intrigued. Everytime that megaphone comes >out, I cross my fingers and hope. But - sigh - it turns out to be Michigan >Militia instead. Funny, because right *before* I became a Fruhead apparently there was some kibbitzing about people getting tired of Video, and the band apparently took note. Now it seems the worm has turned -- I think I've only heard it 3 or maybe 4x, and I certainly could live with it on a much more regular basis. >Darlington Darling - damn, why couldn't I fly across the country for the >Vault >show :) This is another one I've been "gifted" with on a fairly regular basis -- enough to keep me happy anyway. Which I think indicates there actually *is* a good amount of variety in the setlists -- you're not hearing the same stuff at shows you go to that I hear at the ones I go to! (Not to rub it in or anything -- it's more-or-less random I think with the non-obligatory songs :) ) >Even more importantly... > >I have no problem with the lads - or any band - doing their versions of other >songs. Does that sound right? My take on the medleys is -- yes, I'm tired of LP9, I wish they'd do some of the other medleys more frequently. I'm not sure how the medleys evolved -- a signature moment from their busking/cover band roots? In any case, I think they've perhaps grown beyond them as a finale -- showing they can kick ass with other people's tunes, and be inventive to boot, is certainly fun, but it might not belong at the end of the show any more, but more as a sort-of-improv moment (like they've done with Who stuff, and Bowie stuff, and Van Morrison stuff, and zillions--of-other-peoples'-stuff). I must say, it was refreshing NOT to have an end-of-show medley during the early part of this spring's tour -- I was thinking maybe they were working on a new one, or ditching the idea in favor of something else. But now the medleys are back -- and although I don't mind them, I do wish there was more variety. I don't even think LP9 is the strongest of the 4 medleys. As for "inelegance" -- I'm wondering if maybe this is one of the reasons some "mainstream" people have trouble taking them seriously as tunesmiths and artists -- the last impression of the show is something whimsically playful, derived from other people's work, instead of something that shows THEIR writing and instrumentation and singing to best advantage. Not that there's anything wrong with whimsical and playful (like any of you who know me could think I'd ever say so) but it may not be appropriate, as Dave says, as the last element of the show. Wow, I hope that didn't sound really harsh. I do adore when Fruvous plays covers -- and I know they can cover almost ANYTHING. I guess I'm just concerned that sometimes an assortment of cover-snippets at the end of a show overshadows their own work. Wow... see, I totally disagree. I mean.... hearing the Love Potion medley... or psycho killer as the last song of the set .... is easily as important to me as hearing GWS or the Drinking Song as the closer. I mean.... they just have such WONDERFUL energy, ya know? I guess what I'm trying to say is that hearing one of those medleys right near the end of a show is what really makes me leave with that mental-hopping-up-and-down motion. :) Call me crazy, but it just wouldn't be the same for me without one of those cover medleys at the end. (And incidentally, I think the LP#9 is my favorite of those...) But hey, to each his own. It's the variety that makes it interesting.
