Now this wasn't just any cafe/bookstore, but rather a really interesting one w/ a cafe that overlooked a small waterfall w/ waterwheel. It was on a somewhat desolate road lined on both sides w/ forests. The buildings were shingled w/ white. Some other people I've been talking w/ seem to think it's within like a thirty mile radius of Hampshire College and a frequent pilgrimage for Smith/ Holyoke/ Hampshire students. They figured MF fans would know too (seeing that quite a few of them seem to be from the area) So... anyone know of the bookstore of which i speak? But - and here's where we bond even though our tastes differ - the songs I really want to hear are still way low on the list. Played only once: Gulf War Song!! ONCE???!! This is such a majorly AMAZING piece of writing, it's just a crime it doesn't get performed more often. Maybe 'cause it's a capella and *slow* (as opposed to YWGTTM). Maybe they think it's too much like The Drinking Song - which also has guitars (and kicks ass, as well - don't get me wrong). I don't know. Maybe - God forbid - they don't like it much anymore! It's one of the songs I always play for people who've never heard them - and maybe this just says a lot about who my friends are more than anything else - it the song that most consistantly makes the strongest impression. **Aside: Say you meet someone's who's never heard of the lads (perish the thought!) but they're intrigued. But not so intrigued that you know you'll lose them after, say, three songs... what three do you play 'em, and in which order? Played only twice: Kick in the Ass, Spiderman (both sorta silly, true, but I'd rather hear these two these days instead of their seemingly-getting-faster-everytime-they-perform-it (so much so that I can't even understand it anymore) Green Eggs and Ham. Also played only twice: Video Bargainville. Everytime that megaphone comes out, I cross my fingers and hope. But - sigh - it turns out to be Michigan Militia instead. I've Got to Get a Message to You - especially a cappela like they did at the Roxy - sooooo good. Darlington Darling - damn, why couldn't I fly across the country for the Vault show :) Even more importantly... I have no problem with the lads - or any band - doing their versions of other songs. It can be really cool. (In the Bob Dylan/Paul Simon tour, Dylan does a cover of Not Fade Away that just resonates). But must this wonderful band close their show with their Love Potion #9 medly? I'm sort of tired of Psycho Killer, too, but not as much as the medly. And neither of them would be that bad if they didn't CLOSE with them! Yes, they come back and do "encores" of their stuff, but it's... well... I don't even know the word. Inelegant. Does that sound right? And when they opened for G Love here in LA, they actually *closed* with the #9 medly! No encores or anything. That was the last impression they left us with! These guys have a LOT of really good material. Grrr.... Okay. Let me just take a breath. ... Okay. So, having said that, I'd like to propose that a 120 Minutes band is much different than an "MTV Band." Let's compare: TRL plays N'Sync 120 plays Ben Folds Five TRL plays Joey McIntyre 120 Minutes plays Fountains of Wayne TRL plays Limp Bizkit 120 Minutes plays... well, ok, it's not a perfect system. They play Limp Bizkit too. TRL is hosted by a pretty boy who dates a young starlet 120 Minutes is hosted by a guy who just plain knows his shit. Which area do you think fruvous better fits into? Beyond that, Matt Pinfiled does respond to "e-mail trends." He mentions when a certain band has gotten a lot of requests, and just last night seemed to play the London Suede video soley on the strength of the e- mails he received. Plus, I think a band that debuts on 120 minutes just inherently gets more respect than one that debuts on TRL. It's a more musically adventurous audience, I think, and not all 12-year-old girls and frat boys. Ideally, though, if anyone thinks this is a worthy idea, we should wait until Thornhill has a video, just because I think new stuff would get their attention more. ~jen - -- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Nobody likes you when you're 23." --Blink 182 "Do you know that you are very strong?"-- Grover "Measure your life in love."-- Rent Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Share what you know. It immediately gets people interested in these guys, and from there I can actually expose them to the music. I find that people have a harder time focussing on a song at first listen than a conversation, and a lot of the appeal of the band lies in their personalities. So providing a glimpse of their personality allows this next victim ;-) to better understand the music, IMHO. From there I usually pick something else off of Live Noise, since that's the one I encourage people to buy, and I figure the more they know off of it, the more likely they are to buy it. Probably King of Spain and the Drinking Song, because they *are* "standards," and showcase both the serious and the fun side. >>they actually *closed* with the #9 medly! No encores or anything. That was the last impression they left us with! Almsot all the newbies I've dragged along have gone away humming and talking about that more often than their other songs, simply because they hadn't heard the other songs enough to hum them (I don't hang in the most musically talented of circles, save a few ;-) It's fun, it rocks, it makes you laugh, it's easy to sing along with and dance to, and it leaves you in a good mood. Not bad for a closer I'd say. The bottom line is that if people have a good time, they're more likely to check the band out again.
