Hola everyone, I come to you from Mindy's house - nicely rested and showered (okay, it was a jacuzzi, not like I'm gloating...) after a wonderful VA Beach show. So, I moved out of the dorms at school, and into my own place, and being poor can't afford to get internet access. Yet. Soon though. So, thus my absence from the NG and IRC and whatever else. I still have email though, so, uh, yay? While I certainly miss being wired, it's also really nice to get to do things like read and go hiking and not have that "Damn, I haven't checked the NG in a while" thought in the back of my head :) RIght. Well, I think Mindy and Amanda pretty much summed up the show last night, I just wanted to add that I thought it was great as well. So happy to finally get to see Fruvous in a smaller place. I mean, a show with 60 people? Yeah boy! I was really psyched to hear some not-so-new stuff. Ash Hash and Tureen were the "high" points of the evening for me. It was strange to be in such a small place. It was, in fact, like a basement show. I'll be the first to admit that I can't dance, so it was weird dancing like a goof about two feet from Murray and Jian. Murray assured me that I didn't look *too* dumb, so I felt mildly less stupid. Other noteworthy things? I've learned that it isn't so much fun to try and dance while seating on a hard floor, especially after several hours in a car. Luckily, KOS got the crowd up and my back out of painful cramps. I can't really think of anything that hasn't been covered right now ... except that I am excited to get to see Fruvous in Baltimore tomorrow! It's been a mini-decade of Fruvous for me (as Mindy pointed out) having my first show and my tenth show both be in my happy little home state :) Anyhoo, we need to set out for Baltimore, the Vault, and more of that cool shtuff. Mindy is making fun of me for typing so much, but it's been a while, and I can't help it! Thanks to everyone for the B-Day wishes!!! I didn't get to see them at the time, but it still makes me happy :) For those in town on Thursday, i'll see you in Baltimore - and if you need a place to crash afterwards, there is a lot of floor space at my house - hideous interior decorating and all. Mmm. Internet. Wow. Something positive for once. Ever have a song that you can't get out of your head? Moxy F does that to me a lot. Here's the top five songs that I always seem to wake up humming... 1. Now I'm pounding the ouzo with Mario Puzo Who's a funny fellow? W.P. Kinsella Who brought the cat? Would Margeret Atwood? Who needs a shave? He's Robertson Davies! Ondaatje started a food fight, salmon mousse all over the scene Spilled some dressing on Doris Lessing, these writer types are a scream! (This makes me want to read a book by each of the authors in turn) 2. Look straight at the coming disaster Realize what you've lost You keep handing out horseshoes Horseshoes have gotta be tossed. (I especially like when they don't sing "horseshoes" at the same time and it sounds like horse-horse-shoes) 3. A letter to you from where I been holed up in this bucolic, agrarian compound. One step ahead of the government bloodhound. (and later) Now they got us on TV, and making us look stupid. Shot of me flipping my lid, at that mutt reporter, a classic case of race dilution (I just think it's fun to say "bucolic agrarian compund") 4. I've just gotta get a message to you. Hold on. Hold on. One more hour and my life will be through. Hold On. Hold on. (Incredible song... better modern doo-wop than Billy Joel or the Nylons) 5. B.J. Don't cry no more Wonders what his heart is beating for Says he takes it much too hard Give my regards to B.J. Fortunately =I've= never heard downsizing, so I'm covered there. Most of Y'all haven't heard Earthquakes (2/19/99 doesn't count!) so at least there's that bit o' mystery! And while we're fessing up about Grudge, I for one don't HATE it by any means, but I do think it is one of the less tuneful and/or interesting of the current new crop. I haven't been here in a long time. This is pretty jumbled up, but oh well... I finally convinced Mom to really take me to a show, and VA Beach is what it ended up being. We got there sort of early (before Gus even) and we tried to go to Fat Daddy's but it was sort of too swanky psanky for us. That is, it was expensive. We returned to the club in time to see a bunch of people in a car pull up to the bouncer and ask, "Who's playing tonight?" the bouncer replied, "I don't know, i can't pronouce the name. There's some posters over there." I helpfully informed the carfolks that it was Moxy Fruvous. I had a sore throat, so i dunno if they really got it, but I was more useful than the bouncer at least =). The Abyss was kind of blinding at first, they had all these black lights and red lights and blue lights and really any sort of light that's not white. Amanda immediately saw me and said Hi and such on, then Mom and went over to talk to Tobey. I got a FruMiles card, and Tobey and I both got on mom's case for not taking me to the Baltimore show. After a while, "Gus" came out-- funny looking chap, he had a nice voice, but I didn't like his style of music very much. he was deliighted to hear that some girl in the audience had a CD of his, and halfway through one of his songs, Fruvous came in the front door and EVERYBODY turned to look at them (or at least look at what everyone else was looking at), and Gus got totally ignored. Still, he seemed to like the crowd. Fruvous came on and played and I can't remember the set list's order but there's one somewhere on the ng anyway. Jian noticed that Murray had his own personal red light over in the corner "look at Murray!" "whoooooaaa..". Jian then told a story which he insisted nobody put on the internet, so i can't tell you guys (but it was really funny!=P) that had to do with red lights. They started doing this thing about the song "Cinnamon Girl", until one of them said, "they don't know Cinnamon Girl," ( reffering to the audience) and it stopped. Mom was quietly protesting that she DID know Cinnamon Girl, and on the way home, we heard it on the radio =). Jian kept quoting old presidents to make points, like Nixon said something about a "a clear majority", which he used in reference to how many the audience hadn't seen them before. Some guy kept saying that Nixon hadn't really said 'a CLEAR majority', but had said a something else majority instead, I don't remember what, Jian had a pretty hard time getting him to be quiet. I got up and started dancing at about the third song, and then stayed up pretty much the rest of the set. get in the Car was a bunch of fun to dance to, plus MBLABOA. At the 9:30 Club, there was no space whatsoever to dance, so it was really fun when i could. At the beginning of ?Splatter Splatter? I leaned over to Mom as Dave took out the accordian and pointed it out to her. dave grinned and said something which i can't quite remember. Somewhere in the middle of the show, Jian broke one of his drumsticks and decided to give the other one to some crowd member. He thought it should go to "someone who's never seen the band before, but now thinks they're pretty okay", and there was this girl screaming her head off in the 3rd row and he said "not loves the band, but thinks they're 'just all right'." boy was she bummed. so Mom realized she qualified (well, she actually REALLY liked the band, but she didn't want to point that out to Jian) and she started waving her hands and all, and Jian gave her the drumstick, which she obligingly said i could use. I play the drums. During GE&H, at the not the beatles part, Jian was telling Dave "look what you did to Mike!" Mike was sort of babbling about I don't remember what in a British-esque voice. after Mike had talked for a bit, Jian said, "Okay, so you didn't do that much to Mike. But USUALLY he would be offended by callous words like that!" The AC/DC at mach 2 with the banjo was very nice-- never really thought much of that song normally, but boy was it cool like that! =) After the guys had gone off, before any encores, all the guys except Dave crouched behind the sound guy's switchboard instead of going backstage or wherever it was that Dave went. when they came out for the encore, Jian started talking about the tradition of bands going and taking showers and then coming out for encores. Someone said "You smell so much better!" to Jian (who?). I recoil from anything on the topic of how Jian smells. =). Jian then was saying that either showering or crouching behind the sound guy in full view of the entire audience would do. Jian:"'Do you think they can see us?'" Murray:"'oh no, I think he saw me!'" It was especially funny since really EVERYBODY could see them and they were pretty darn obvious. After the show, pretty much everyone left, leaving about ten people still in the club (I doubt anyone knew the lads would come out to talk to ppl). Mom and I hung around and i bought a nice neon orange FruShirt. Orange is my favourite color. Jian, BTW, does not know what his favourite color is. =) After a bit, Jian came out to talk to people. He was talking to some people near Mom and I and Mom goes, "hey, go talk to MustardMan", after I had told her the MustardGirl story. I hadn't thought to bring teresa, but it might have been fun to show her to Amanda (do you know that story, amanda?). Then Jian came over and talked to Mom and I. I told him my voice didn't actually sound like this (it had pretty much given up on me by the end of the concert, my sore throat was not happy with me =)). I actually expected him to start laughing when he first heard it (it's sadly funny) like Amanda and Ellen did. But, no. We talked a little bit, and he went to talk to other people. Mike came out but he was talking to someone about hockey, and Murray got pretty much surrounded (no offense to the surrounders or anything. good going.). I was bummed when i found out FruChild was there and i didn't meet her (awww). As Mom and I were driving to the hotel, we stopped at a red light (the lights in VA Beach are very strange. ALL the lights at a intersection stay red for like two minutes before one turns green again) and we were behind this car with a bunch of interesting bumper stickers which I tried to read, but I could only read the one that said "Fighting Gravity", which seemed really familiar. I thought that I'd seen someone at the club with a shirt like that or something. As we were driving up beside the car in question, i realized Murray was sitting in the back seat, which I noticed when trying to read this bumperstickerish thing which was in the window, but then there was no way i could read it without looking like I was staring at Murray, which would have been kinda rude. On the subject of Murray, when i told MG(trese) that he was the Bass Guy, she was like "oh? when we met him, I thought he seemed like one of those skinny guys with the highish voices". But he really is pretty skinny isn't he? I was looking at the fruvous purity test and I was counting how many things I had gotten on there. i don't remember them all, but I got a FruMiles Card, Mom got something from a band member, i got a shirt, I drove some quota of miles (one of them), i met someone from the internet and I got hit on by a band member! I'd say that pretty big improvment. =D Well, anyway, someone has to fill in the spaces I forgot (amanda?=)). Happy Happy fun fun. It's nice to write on the ng again. Lucky for you, I have to work late tonight, and this is my mental break. No, no-- cheers aren't necessary, but I appreciate the sentiment, really ;-) By the way, I'm typing this sentence after getting about half way thorugh, and it's longer than I intended. Consider yourself warned ;-) Anyway, as some may recall (though I somehow doubt it) my companion to this here Clearwater festival was my 9-year-old sister Melanie. My 9- year-old sister who knows just about all the lyrics her little brain can handle. ;-) Who can recite entire passages of banter from the one show I have on tape. She's a cutie, an she was *way* excited that I (inherently cool to her, by the mere fact that I am 14 years older)was taking her (and only her, to the chagrin of some friends... but they will get over it ;-) to a real live concert, and a *fruvous* concert no less. The drive up took us through Sleepy Hollow, and past Pleasantville, which scared her a bit and made her wonder if the whole town was in black and white, respctively. We didn't detour to find out ;-) She had picked out Live Noise as our travel music, and after about an hour, we arrived at the park. After about another half an hour, we parked. ;-) We make our way to the gate, and the first thing she wants to do it... eat. Figures ;-) So we head over to the "food court" (which sounds entirely too mall-esque, and not nearly indicative of the cool foodstuffds that were available there.) After lunch, we wander a bit, enjoying how *absolutely beuatiful* this place is, right on the water, perfect weather. Very cool vibe. So we wander through the vendors and the tents. Melanie plays every drum we come in contact with. We come to the tent where the performer photos are being sold, and she wants to buy the nice big framed photo of the guys, taken at the Philly Folk Fest 2 years ago, and have them all sign it. At $55, I managed to talk her out of it ("well, we can buy it, or you can eat ice cream later, but not both" ;-) We tried our hands at juggling. Unfortunately, we both found that we would need a few *more* hands trying to be truly successful. But I made juggle or two every now and again. Got our "I've been counted" stickers, and moved on to the Storytellers tent. This was cool. We spent an hour and a half there, listening to all sorts of silliness. By this time, it's almost 4, so we take the promised ice cream break, and try to find a decent spot for Dar Williams, so we might move up before fruvous arrives on stage. We search in vain, and eventually wind up a good ways back, on the fringes of the bright orange tape signifying poison ivy, behind the folding chairs of some people who were no where to be found. With a big tree branch in front of us. Don't ask me what Dar looks like, cause I have not the foggiest, but she sings real purdy-like ;-). Melanie liked "babysitter." I tend to agree. OK, frucontent ;-) After Dar's set, the crowd begins to rise and stretch, and some to move elsewhere, so we seize the opportunity to relocate ourselves. With a few spritely maneuvers, we manage to wind up in the very first row, what would normally be stage Dave, but what today was more Stage Santa Who Signs. So we settle in, and wait for the boys. From here we have a good view of the backstage area, and Mel points out that Dave just walked from the van to an area of backstage that was blocked to our view. So we watch them prepare for taking the stage. Mostly unpacking and such, but at one point Murray did lots of bouncing up and down, in a sort of warm up calesthentics-type, let's-get-pumped way. It was cute. Mel waves to them every now and then, but they do not see her. She is undaunted ;-) The set has been pretty well covered, but it was great fun to watch her get all excited at the songs she knew, laugh at the banter, etc. She was especially fond of Jian's port-a-potty humor. ;-)I enjoyed the whole set muchly as well, but then again, I usually do ;-)Although I apparently am the *only* person in the crowd who missed the signing wonderment that accompanied Saucep'n, as I was watching to see how much of the lyrics she knew. She pretty much only knows "hamster." ;-) Afterwards, they announced that they'd meet and greet in another area, but Melanie, seeing others young'ns dashing behind the stage, pen in hand, ran over in the hopes of getting an autograph. I felt *very* badly, in a very nasty peeping Tom kinda way, when I discovered that Murray was basically getting changed behind the van. So I gathered her up, and we headed over to the designated spot, and stood on line. OK, now someone (I'm not sure who) commented that this was their 10th show, and they now have no problems conversing freely with the band. I, on the other hand, am not quite there yet. Granted, this was only show #6, so perhaps someday soon ;-) But then again, I've never really been a stick-around-after-the-show sort, so I never really had any warm- up opportunities. So in a nutshell, we were both pretty mute, with Mel shyly smiling as she handed them her book to sign, and me kinda ushering her though, speaking only twice, when Mike commented on her juggling sticker, which she couldn't seem to muster up the courage to answer, and when Jian finished signing her book and inquired on me. Just kinda said my name and mumbled a "nice to meet you." This is why I generally just leave when the music's over! ;-)I was comforted, though, by the Jian's comment during the set that despite three Fleadh shows together, they had yet to work up the nerve to talk to Elvis Costello. So I'm in good company. You still with me? Didn't think so... that's ok, I'm still typing. ;-) We head over to the Rainbow stage for the "hot harmonies" workshop, and sit basically in the exact same spot as at the main stage, over stage Dave. Lori and Deb came and sat next to us, and behind us were a pair of brand new frufans literally bubbling over with excitement. They were cute. The highlight of this section was that they played the Kid's Song, Melanie's all-time-favorite frusong that she *really* wanted them to play. She got quite psyched, and sang along to a good portion of the song. So now it's time to head home, and the drive Jersey-ward was filled with all sorts of interesting questions. Melanie had been making a valiant attempt to learn all of their names all day, and tried to recite them all at this point. It's amazing the numerous ways a 9-year- old tongue can wrap itself around the word "Jian." I swear it had about 7 syllables at one point. She eventually took to calling him "the one that talks a lot." ;-) And we made the mental connection to "Murray" by reminding her that was the name of the dog on "Mad About You." She also wanted to know when "the one that talks a lot got the yellow things in his hair," when "that one shaved his head," if any of them were old enough to be married, and if any of them were. She also commented on the attractiveness of one them, but my loyalty procludes me from saying who ;-) SO that was our great adventure in teh Hudson Valley. Overall, I had a fairly amazing day that I will not forget anytime soon, (marred only by the rude Wendy's staff we encountered on the way home), and the lil' sis is very much looking forward to Ocean City. As am I ;-) ~jen (who thinks she will now be working later than she thought) - -- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Nobody likes you when you're 23." --Blink 182 "Do you know that you are very strong?"-- Grover "Measure your life in love."-- Rent Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Share what you know.
