This is my 1st time to Falcon Ridge and my girlfriend and I have a few questions if anyone can answer them. 1) Someone mentioned on the newsgroup that cooking is difficult because fire is not allowed (no grills). I have a propane stove... is this ok to bring and use to cook stuff? 2) Is there handicapped parking, and how close is it to camp/stage sites? 3) How close are the campsites and stages to each other? 4) Are personal belongings (food, coolers, clothes, etc...) safe in your tent while attending concerts, or should they be locked in your car while you are away? 5) Is there really "quiet" camping available (I like being able to get some sleep once I Get tired and cranky and up past my bedtime :-) ? Is it too far away from the rest of the festival to make it a viable option? Thanks in advance for any advice answers you can give me. OK... it's late, but it's here... the review you've all been waiting for (+ACo-grin+ACo-)... The adventure truly began on a sunny weekend afternoon about a month ago when Becky +ACY- I REALLY started talking seriously about making this trip. Beck was NOT a Fruvirgin, but hadn't traveled more than 150 miles to see the lads. We happened to read her horrorscope that day and learned that the stars were properly aligned for her to make a pilgrimage of some sort. And of course we know better than to mess with karma... right? So, we got our Fruvous tickets, obtained my mechanics word that my car would make it to Michigan and back, propped the postcard on the dash, and left Denver around 7:00 Sunday morning. Eastern Colorado... Nebraska... Iowa... OK, so the first day was EXTREMELY low on the excitement meter... We finally got to Eldridge, IA, where we were taken in by our cousin Michelle. After learning WHY we were heading to Ann Arbor, Michelle insisted that we play a Fruvous cd for her... and that if she didn't approve of the band, we'd have to spend the week with her instead. (o: We popped in 'Bargainville', and had her blessing before 'River Valley' was over. Kellan, our 3-year-old second cousin enjoyed dancing to 'Laika'... Left Eldridge around 10:30 Monday morning, and as we left town, spotted a water tower with the words 'River Valley' on it. Coincidence??? Arrived in Ann Arbor Monday evening, met Joe (our Fruspace sponsor) +ACY- Donna (we finally meet+ACE-), and for a lack of anything better to do, went to see Phantom Menace'. +ADw-Off Topic+AD4- OK... two words... BORING and POINTLESS+ACEAIQAh- And that was coming from a Star Wars fan... I don't have anything else to say about it... Tuesday - arrived at The Ark around 4:00, where Beck +ACY- I were the first fans in line. This because Becky had convinced herself she wouldn't be happy with anything but front row stage Dave seats. We were joined shortly by Kat +ACY- her mom. The wait wasn't too bad... I've discovered that few social situations are as conducive to meeting interesting people as the line-up for a Fruvous show. And apparently our reputation had spread... as folks walked up and down the line looking for the 'Colorado people'. Doors opened at 7:30, and the wait paid off in the form of Becky's dream seats... right in front of Dave's mike. We mingled, acquired our Frumiles stamps from Tobey, and absorbed the atmosphere. There was just SOMETHING in the air... at one point I turned to Beck and told her 'This is going to be a GREAT show...'. Mike had hinted to me last week in Boulder that often in Ann Arbor they open for themselves. Sure enough, sometime after 8:00, Dave takes the stage by himself. YAY+ACE- The opening set: Dave - A House is Not a Home (nobody seems to know if this IS the title... ?) Mike - 5 Years (Bowie tune)... Mike's powerful voice NEVER ceases to amaze me. I can't remember ever hearing him miss a note... Jian - I Will Hold On (solo) Murray - The Hunt for the Dangerous Pork Tenderloin... +ACo-LOL+ACo- So after a very short break, Fruvous took the stage for their main set. One chord of 'Splatter Splatter' was all it took the make the 1250 mile, 20 hour trip worthwhile... (o: Dave's setlist: Splatter Darling Indy If Only Moon Kids When She Pisco Tureen Sauce Organ Bittersweet Homeward 1/2 Laika River - Car Spanish ENCORE 1 Michigan Militia ENCORE 2 Gulf War Song I was absolutely blown away. 'Bittersweet'... 'Organ Grinder'... 'Homeward Bound'... the biggest highlights of MY evening. The banter was funny, but there weren't really any improvs to speak of. The venue was excellent. The acoustics were incredible. The crowd was into the show and very attentive. The setlist was phenomenal. Donna +ACY- I later agreed (semi tongue-in-cheek) that the best part of the show was the absence of 'Boss', 'King' and 'GEH'. I know, I know... how dare I? Love the tunes... but they ARE getting tired. Hung for awhile at The Ark, went for drinks at a tavern across the street, then back to the apartment... where a combination of Fruvous and chocolate-covered espresso beans kept me up 'til sometime around 4:00... Oh well, it wasn't the first and surely won't be the last sleep-deprived Frutrip of my life+ACE- over 'n' out xoxoxo bridget (o: 'Dave's banjo... Mike's artwork... and Murray's a great guy+ACE-' :Jian, 06/16/99 ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Jun 1999 15:43:12 -0600 From: "Bridget" Subject: June 16 review (long... sorry) BRIDGET +ACY- BECKY'S EXCELLENT ANN ARBOR ADVENTURE, PART THE SECOND... Beck, Donna, and I finally started moving sometime around 10:30. We immediately began to get ready to go the The Ark, because Becky had convinced herself that we needed to be in line by 1:00 to stake out our seats again. I'd have been happy with getting there by 4... so we compromise. We were in front of the venue armed with a pizza, root beers, and a deck of cards at 2:30. Needless to say, at 5 hours before doors, we were the first ones there for the second show as well. It wasn't long before we were once again joined by Kat. The three of us spent the afternoon chatting and playing cards. Sporting my Fruvous jersey, I went to Subway at one point to get a refill, and passed Mike on the sidewalk. I said 'hi' and he asked me what hockey team the jersey is for... Later on Beck and I go to a coffee shop down the street to satiate our chocolate-covered espresso bean craving and pass Mike at just about the same spot. I smiled at him again, and he said 'It's the Vancouver Canucks, isn't it?' +ACo-g+ACo- Donna arrived around 4, so at least then we had a fourth person and could play hearts. YAY+ACE- Little by little, more fans showed up, but there wasn't really a serious line until after 5:00. Of course, being the good sister that I am, I refrained from telling Becky 'I told you so'. Getting into the room was a bit chaotic, as the doors were opened before soundcheck was over... it was all good, though... Becky, Kat, Kat's mom and I managed to secure the same four seats from the night before. No opening performance tonight, but a setlist as spellbinding as Tuesday night's. Dave's setlist: Down Horse Too Careful Too Cold Fly This Boy (off-mic) Boss (off-mic) Spidey (they didn't do) Poorno Early Morn King Booty Ass Michi Tureen Sauce Hold MPG Nuits BJ - Darl. - Psycho ENCORE 1 Authors (well, it was supposed to be, anyway) Billie Jean ENCORE 2 The Drinking Song Afterward, Joe asked me +ADw-snap decision+AD4- which show was my favorite... I told him Tuesday night, because of the opening 'band', 'Bittersweet', 'Homeward', blah, blah, blah... But after having some time to let everything sink in, and review the setlists, etc., etc., etc... this was a pretty darned amazing set. OK, where to begin my praise for this show? When Jian started 'It's Too Cold', I honestly thought it was going to be an improv until they started to sing. Becky was thrilled, 'Too Cold' is one of her faves. 'This Boy' off-mic was indescribable. My favorite venues continue to be the ones that afford the lads a chance to busk it a little bit. 'My Poor Generation' and 'Too Careful' are quite possibly my favorites of the new songs. 'Nuits' has been on my wish list for as long as I can remember... I was so entranced during the song that I'm still not sure it really happened... (o: 'Darlington' is an incredible live tune, and hearing it twice was excellent. 'Psycho Killer' was awesome (OK, I am running out of synonyms for 'super'... where's my thesaurus?). The last couple times I've seen this one, the lights were dimmed, and Jian got the crowd absolutely silent for the first 3 lines of the song, then at 'don't touch me I'm a real live wire' the lights came up and the band just rocked+ACE- OK, so written word does NO justice for the effect of being there... it's incredible. Becky was a little angry at Dave for 'teasing' her with 'Authors'... she's been dying to see it live, only to have the guitar break down. She mentioned it to him after the show, to which he replied 'Oh, that's too bad, eh?'. Heh, so sympathetic+ACE- One last note on our Excellent Ann Arbor adventure (off-topic but fun)... with one day left before we had to head back to Denver, Beck and I met up with Dan at Cedar Point on Thursday and had a blast+ACE- 9 hours of good, clean, rollercoaster-filled fun+ACE- Two enthusiastic thumbs up... I highly recommend it. And there you have it, kids... the two greatest Fruvous shows I have witnessed to date. My condolences to all the poor souls who didn't make it +ADw-evil laugh+AD4-. And now I must begin the arduous task of easing back into the real world. I enjoyed another great Frutrip, met some great people... hope it won't be too long 'til the next time... In closing, and at the risk of sounding like a cheesy acceptance speech at an annoying awards show, I'd like to thank the folks who transformed this insane, 2500 mile marathon into an unforgettable experience: Joe +ACY- Debbie - Thank you.
