Hey Katie, are you sure about the general seating? Have they changed the music pier since last year? I attended the Fruvous/Buckwheat Zydeco show there last July, and it was definitely *not* general seating. I double checked my pictures from that show and just as I remembered it, the hall was filled with rows of folding chairs and we all had assigned seats. I got up and danced along the side wall though, so it wasn't too bad. Unless they've changed things, I'm going to base my actions upon last year's experience, and get my ticket ASAP. - -- Trace trace@frumail.org AMM-F: You must be this insane to ride ----- - -Veronica J Gruneberg ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Jun 1999 16:06:54 GMT From: trace@frumail.org (Trace) Subject: Re: Pisco Bandito On Sun, 13 Jun 1999 10:39:31 -0400, "KatieWow" wrote: >am i the only one who doesn't think "pisco" is just a ha-ha song? sure, >it's funny - but isn't it more about tourist exploitation and such things? >or am i reading far too much into it? >~~kate, who is mildly worried that a certain someone is cracking up at the >fact that she thinks pisco is just a metaphor for something else :) Nope. I agree with you Katie. As so often happens with humor, there are deeper, underlying issues in the subtext. Humor, whether it is in the form of parody, sarcasm, or even slapstick, is often used to discuss serious issues. If you take the time to think about such lyrics, and wonder what is really being said, you can find interesting points of view in songs that may seem otherwise frivolous. I admire the ability to do that. Sometimes people fail to consider anything beyond the surface joke value and therefore miss the message in a song. In those cases, just who is going for the cheap laugh, the band who wrote the song, or the listener? And what's wrong with a cheap laugh anyway? Being funny isn't easy. Believe it or not, I'm actually jumping to Msr. Patrick L. Kellogg's defense here (more or less). I find it interesting that a few weeks ago someone (I'm inclined to think it was either Chad or chad) commented about there never being a review that said anything like "the concert sucked, they were all off and I'm never going again" (well, more or less... I wasn't gonna try and fish for it, I don't remember when it was made). Well, here we have our first critical review that didn't rave about how great the show was... and many a knee jerk reaction was to take arms and attack. Granted, more than a few of Patrick's comments were less than tactful, but he more or less did apologize. Some of you may remember my first appearance on the ng resulted in an immediate foot in my mouth, that took me a bit to recover. Every other person gets off to a bad start in the ng, but you were patient with me and I would hope you would extend your patience and guidance to Patrick as well (forgive me if I sounded condescending, Patrick... twas not my intent). Patrick, my friend... a few comments for you: 1) I would hope that despite some of the more "passionate" responses to your posts you would still consider being a part of our ammf community, and perhaps reserving some of the sarcasm until you aren't the complete stranger that folks have a difficult time in interpreting (ie, there are times myself or Lori or Chad or chad or someone are sarcastic as hell, but because we all are familiar with each other we don't get flamed immediately). And for folks of the newsgroup... I would hope that you would consider a second chance for our new poster (and if he doesn't learn to play well with others after a month then we can form and angry mob and run him out of town ;^) <-- joke ) 2) Not to respond to all of your points because they've been trampled to death already... I did want to comment on your general feeling of Fruvous' popularity and the crowd numbers they draw (and I guess, the quality of fans they draw). a)If you ask every Früvous Fan why they like the band, they will no doubt give a wide variety of answers. For me personally, it's music that _isn't_ ear candy. I can't listen to Früvous and study or work or anything because many of the lyrics are so compelling to me that I get distracted and find myself singing along, or re-listening to hear new meanings. Granted, not every Früvous song has intellectual significance (the meaning of life found in Johnny Saucep'n? Saints Preserve Us!!!). But try sitting alone some night with the lights low or candles burning and set "Wood" on repeat. Listen to the words, listen to the harmonies, listen for the integral parts that make up the songs... there is so much to Früvous Songs both musically and literally. b)I don't know how long you've subscribed to ammf, but recently there was quite a discussion about possible directions for the band and whether or not we as fans (not that our decisions have any permanent effect on band decisions) want the world-wide MTV popularity for the band. One the general feelings I got from the discussion [FOR THE RECORD, THIS IS ALL MY UNSOLICITED OPINION] is that if the band wanted that type of popularity, they could very well do it. Between their management and their ability... they could become big, I think. They've chosen to perform the way they do and market themselves the way they do. They enjoy the closeness they have with their fan following. They appreciate the fact that people drive anywhere from 15 min to 8+ hours to see them in concert... and because of that they make every effort to make each show unique and different and special. Someone made a comment about going to 2 BNL shows and they were exactly the same, right down to the between song banter. Besides being incredibly talented performers, I believe they have incredible business savvy... and in the end Moxy Früvous is a business venture. I believe that what they have is something that may be appreciated by smaller numbers but will be appreciated longer and have more of a long-lasting effect than a group who reaches millions but are forgotten after their second album and get their songs sold on K-tel priceless gems collections in K-mart. c) MF is seen in general as a "fun-loving" band, yes... sometimes they play King of Spain (KoS)into the ground, and the guys themselves get tired of it... but you know, I went to a concert where they _didn't_ play KoS... and you could feel it's absence ["like a room in my house had just been rearranged"- Sting, Rock Steady]. Bands get stuck with signature songs... for many radio stations it's the only song that gets played. The fans know that there is more to MF than KoS... Some of their greatest songs (well, my personal faves) they can't really play in concert or only do every once and awhile. Recently they did as a special request "Bittersweet," and the crowd stood in silent awe. It was, obviously, a slightly different arrangement to be done live... but I think it would lose it's magic if it were added as a regular to the playlist. It's hard to stand through an entire 1.5 hour concert of mellow and introspective music, that's seated coffee house fare. To keep the energy up, you have to have a few bouncy or loud or kickin' songs going. The band gives us the kickin' songs, we in turn laugh and dance and scream and have a ball, and the band feeds on our fun-lovin' energy and plays more and jokes and has a blast, and we get more into it and I'm sure you see the pattern? I can't count the number of times someone from the band has commented to me after the show about seeing me in the front row (or near the front) dancing and singing along to almost every song and have a rip-roarin' good time, and thanking me for it! If they see we as fans are having fun, then they feel like they're doing something right :^) I'm sorry this ended up so long, I haven't had much opportunity to post recently because I've been running around, but there were some points I just felt I had to make. Thank you for reading this far, if indeed you have. Again, Patrick... I hope you'll consider hanging around and at least spending some time getting to know us and the band a little more. Thank you for your honest review of the concert, and I hope that those who've flamed him (either subtly or blatantly) will take heart of our open-mindedness here at ammf and give him another chance. Angie, waxing philosophical... it would appear PS: as to the fans being geeky? Yeah, I'm a geek. But I'm a well-rounded geek who plays a middle eastern dumbek; does Renaissance fencing, calligraphy and illumination; 15th cen Italian costuming; musical theatre and melodrama; lindy hop, tap and swing dancing; and computer applications training. Moxy Früvous' music is tapesty that I love to appreciate in every detail, every stitch, and every thread... as well as the overall picture. If you think about it, in some person's eye you are just as much a geek because you're even posting to a newsgroup/mailing list on the internet on a computer... its all a matter of perspective (and yes... the geek comment _was_ rough... there's no sin in refraining from sarcasm, my friend. :^) ) Like a stone in a stream, Life smooths all our edges 'til we barely make a ripple anymore --Edwin McCain ____________________________________________________________________ Get your own FREE, personal Netscape WebMail account today at http://webmail.netscape.com. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Jun 1999 19:25:16 GMT From: Mindy J Munson Subject: Re: great idea? >I must confess that I've had a secret fantasy >of seeing Früvous perform Bowie's "Lady >Stardust." I'm appalled. I wish I had seen this from the beginning (bad Heather, no biscuit). Okay, so what I see is this: A guy posts a seriously unfavourable review of a band's show on a newsgroup dedicated to said band. Uproar ensues. Patrick, you have oft repeated that what you posted was opinion, and you would hope that people here would give you freedom to have your own thoughts (or something to that effect). As long as I live, I will not begrudge you your right to have these opinions. I thank God [1] that you (and everyone else -- this isn't a personal thing) can have opinions, and I'm also falling-down-on-my-knees-every-day-grateful that everyone doesn't have the same opinion as I do. I would be bored shitless. So, please let it be writ that I am not after you for having an opinion. In fact, I'm not after you at all. I am, I think, intrigued by this nasty little uprising in the same way one is intrigued by those World's Worst Accidents shows. Your motives for posting your review to this newsgroup have been questioned several times, and instead of answering, you reply that what you posted is an OPINION. No reasons, though. I guess I'm still left wondering why a person might say to themselves, "Self, I have an idea. We just saw a show we didn't much care for. Let's go to the newsgroup full of dedicated fans and post an unfavourable review. Then, let's hang around and defend ourselves." At some point, you must have thought to yourself that *someone* would interpret your post as trolling. Perhaps you underestimated the reaction. I don't know what you expected to get out of posting what you did (a resounding, "yeah! Moxy Fruvous live shows blow! I'm never going to one again! I hate their music too!" seems a bit much to ask). However. I got a little nervous this morning, checking my e-mail. I came across this: > Killfile me. It's not like I'm going to spam the place. Uh-oh. "Killfile"? I guess I'm not all the geek I'm cracked up to be, cause I don't know what the hell it is. I sincerely hope that it does not imply that someone has the ability and right to bar you from posting. That would be a tragic thing, and I say that with all seriousness. I don't think you should be barred from anywhere (that I know of at least). And as long as your name comes up (for whatever reason) you should have the right to hear it and defend yourself to the best of your ability (or not -- you may decide we're all just a bunch of geeks who have too much time on their hands and resume your daily life). Well, Patrick, I'm sorry you had a bad experience at a show (or the show was unsatisfying, or whatever your complaint was). Fruvous isn't for everyone, and that's okay. Hey, the photo on my old one was awful, and >no one believed that it was really me (it was taken >when I was 16) tanx :) :) not much difference at all. i dont feel 19 and i definitely dont think i LOOK 19. and no passport for me. last week i decided it was time to freak out cause i had no valid ID and my brother was gonna take me out on the day of my bday. so i ran around downtown seeing about a health card, but when i told the ministry teller lady it was for ID (my mom told me this would be ok!) she wouldnt give it to me, she said it was just to be used for medical purposes. she suggsted i get a passport, which i later found out would have cost a nice chunk of change which i did not have, plus that wouldnt have been prosessed for awhile. So after that i went to get an age of majority card, which i discovered would take at least 6 weeks to process. then i inquired about my beginners' license, and the guy told me i'd get the license in 5 days, which would have been too late. SO then i did something sneaky and dishonest, i went back down to the health ministry to obtain a photo health card, saying that i lost my other one, which i took out of my bag before i left (why? in case they searched me??). i was all scared that i would get served by the same woman who turned me down for it just two days earlier, and so when i got there i recognized her and went to the teller farthest away from her, but LO! guess which teller opens up first?? so im walking over to her, thinking to myself "just turn around and leave" but she didnt even recognize me, and i applied for a new health card. i was told by several people that i'd receive my new health card, my new VALID piece of ID the same day, but no, that would be too easy... she told me i'd get in in two to three weeks. AGUHKSHSDGUIAGHAHHIAH!!!!!!!! but ya know what? I didnt even go out for my bday... we went out for supper and me and my bro came home to watch game 3 (go stars!) and by 2nd period we were too tired and stuffed from dinner to move--so we made a collective decision to pack it in and we both just went to bed early.
