ALW, Starbucks, etc. (oops, it's long) 1) sarah the well-informed shared with us: http://www.canoe.ca/JamMusic/may20_moxy.html tah dah! sarah My first reaction was, "Dammit, they spelled his name wrong _again_!!" hee hee... my second reaction was an odd lump in my throat when I read "Thornhill" for the name of the album. Kind of unexpected (my reaction), and a little voice whispering "Going home again," whatever that means. 2) There's been discussion of Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber and musicals and such. I've only been into musical theatre for about 8 years or so, unfortunately money, time, lack of car, etc has limited my experiences. I've never seen Phantom of the Opera. I've sung most of the music, I suffered through Gaston LeReux novel (tough read with everything I had going on), I read a cool "prequel" by Mary Kay called "Phantom," I've seen most of the movie versions (included an animated feature), but I've yet to actually see the musical (It's been a promised b-day present for about 7 years...*sigh*) I saw Cats when I was in NYC last Easter, it was a surprise from the guy I was seeing at the time... while it wasn't too much of an intellectual challenge, the performers were great, the music was fun, and we had a good time. Most musicals I've only seen videos of... on (professional) stage I've seen Les Mis 2x, Miss Saigon, My Fair Lady, Five Guys Named Moe (AWESOME SHOW!!!), Grease (The touring revival featuring Micki Dolenz, it was weird, they all had microphones, it took something away from the show), I'm hoping to be able to catch Sunset Boulevard while it's here in Roch. I like ALW, I like Sondheim, my fave musical is still Les Miserables... I've been told that when I see Rent it will change my mind... but somehow I doubt it. OK, I shared a lot but didn't really make a point... sorry :^) 3) Tim (The Toolman!) posed the question: Do I sense a fellow Larry Niven fan here? (or was it Heinlein???) Well, I guess I miss the specific reference... but as a matter of fact I have read Heinlein (Friday, Stranger in a Strange Land) and Larry Niven ( I can't remember which book, but I know the short was "Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex- about what would _really_ happen were Superman and Lois Lane to "get busy"). If you know/like fantasy (I know if they're considered sci-fi), Marion Zimmer Bradley (Mists of Avalon, Fall of Atlantis) and I believe Mercedes Lackey (Oathbound, Oathbreaker, Heralds series) are (or at least, were) SCAdians. OK, more pointless sharing... I'm just full of it today, I guess. :^) 4) Starbucks: I don't care for Starbucks, I've gone maybe 3 times... I usually end up going to Java Joe's downtown or Tivoli on Park Ave. I like the smell of Starbucks, but I don't like the overall atmosphere. A little too "commercially highbrow" for me or something. Actually, the best coffee is hanging out with friends brewing Gevalia Kaffe to unwind... :^) Denny's: Hate 'em, always have. If a group plans to go after a movie or something, I'll go... but I'm never happy about it(I always suggest an alternative, but get outvoted). Here in NY all the Perkins restaurants were bought out or closed by Denny's, and I _always_ preferred Perkins... but yeah, they're usually the only ones open after a concert. Ok, I'm outta here... counting down the days 'til Ft. Erie and TORONTO!!! In 2035 Dr Butterworth's MegaMailOrder Corp (corporate moto: We Have Seen Attack Ships Flouncing Off The Shoulder Of Orion) produced the Mark 4 Mahoneytron, a simulated trombone playing human life form. The Mark 4 models replaced the unsuccessful ukulele playing Mark 3 which had maloneyfunctioned and run amok on the plectrum mines of Cassiopea after a particularly violent rendition of The Whispering Palms of Nevada. In order to avoid these sorts of problems the Mark 4s were programmed to have their trombones run over by steam rollers after three years functioning. However one unstable Mark 4 Mahoneytron was bitten by a radioactive baritone bullfrog and subsequently mutated into that most feared and notorious of all the galaxy's life forms -- the Bass Player. The Bass Player led a revolution amongst the Mark 4s and after only six bloody months of insurrection all the Mark 4 Mahoneytrons had converted to bass playing with their infamous cry `Spit valve bad, four strings good.' The stability of The Galactic Mandolin Federation was threatened by the presence of so many bass players with their funky riffs and sinful hip swivelling dancing. Dr Butterworth's MegaMailOrder Corp cloned several Adam Hartfields, known as Bladepunners, whose job was to eliminate the bass players. This was not called execution, it was called unfunking. After several years all the bass players were believed to have been unfunked and the galaxy returned to peaceful contemplation of the andante movement of Vivaldi's concerto for two mandolins. However in the dark underbelly of usenet rumours of bass appreciation and funk sensibility persisted. It took the Bladepunners months to track down the last Mahoneytron bass player to his lair in a little known newsgroup nominally created to celebrate Moxy Fruvous, argue the nationalism of Smarties and compare breast sizes. Can the Mahoneytron survive the Bladepunners, or is this end of bass playing in the galaxy? The story continues... Wake up. Time to funk.
