I was a senior in college at SUNY Oswego, and a friend who had seen them at Harborfest dragged me reluctantly to see this band who had an odd name. I loved every minute of that show at Styleen’s though, and have seen them a mere six times since. I didn’t even wait to trade in my frumiles card. . .I took the key chain. I am VERY proud of that key chain. The last two shows I went to I got to meet a few of the “Fru-heads,” and it was nice. I now have a BA in studio art and I am a 23-yr.-old graduate Museum Studies student at Syracuse University. I will finish in December, then if all goes well, I will move to NYC. This summer I am interning at the British Museum in London, England, so I will be missing any Moxy Fruvous shows in NY, unless they get the urge to play for Liz, Phil, and Chuckie. But I am counting on them to tour this fall. . . I met the band this year for the first time in Utica, NY April 30th. It was the sixth show I’d seen, and finally I thought I had enough nerve to meet them. Besides, I had met huge stars like Dave Matthews, and I wasn’t too nervous then, why would I be nervous meeting Moxy? Silly, naive Carolyn. . .I was dumbstruck. My friend decided to introduce me to Murray, and I couldn’t speak. I just stood there shaking my head up and down. In normal situations I am not like this, and in my head I was yelling at myself, “just speak! Don’t let him think you are a dumb blonde!” I just couldn’t though, and after I got my picture and my autograph, I ran off like a scared little kid. I wasn’t much more articulate with Jian, but some of my anxiety had dissipated. Mike quickly signed my poster, no words, so that wasn’t difficult, and with Dave I wasn’t nervous anymore, and he was so good-natured it was easy to approach him. Afterwards, I kept kicking myself. Why did I behave like an idiot with Murray? What possessed me to act as if I had no brain? And then an even more horrifying thought, what must he have thought about me? Alas, it’s over now, and with the number of people they meet, I am in no danger (I hope) of Murray and Jian screaming out to me, “hey it’s the mute” at the next show I see, whenever that will be. Besides, I think I know why I was comfortable scolding Rob Thomas of Matchbox 20 for making sexual references in front of my 15-yr.-old cousins after a concert, and why I was a brainless mute with Murray. Rob Thomas is good looking, and a good singer, but I see nothing more in him. Murray and the rest of them are good looking, good singers, and talented beyond my ability to understand. Most of all they seem to be intelligent, and there is nothing I respect more than that. ------------------------------ Date: 17 May 1999 23:04:31 GMT From: piscopinto@aol.com (PISCOPINTO) Subject: Re: Old cronies unite! We turn to the Starbucks guy and freak out, yelling "Are you guys playing a Nields album???" This is, after all, our first time hearing the Nields in any kind of public place. He looks back, and after a big dramatic pause goes "Huh?". Turns out it's a compilation issued especially for Starbucks, ladies and gentlemen. The last two Fru-shows I saw in Montreal are an interesting contrast. '93 or '94 - 5,000 (or so) seater, sold-out, all-ages show at Le Spectrum. '95 - 350 (or so) seater, half-empty, 18+ show at Club Soda. > The other thing to remember is that the band themselves have said that > they did not like being teenybopper idols. And thank the multiple gods for that! The Spectrum show was when I swore I would never again go to a Fruvous all-ages show. Anyone remember a group that called themselves the "Moxy Morons"? A bunch of TO-area based kids (they looked to be 14-16) who followed Fru around. We went early to get good seats - we and the Morons were the only ones in line, and after 10 minutes, we chose to take shifts since no one wanted to listen to them for the next two hours, with their scrapbooks of everything any member of Fruvous ever said to them, everything each Fru-member wore at every show they'd seen, telling Fru-stories, etc. I've been a die-hard fan of groups before (my record - 12 hours each way to see Rockapella ) but even in line at Rockapella shows, we usually managed to find SOMETHING else to talk about once in a while.. :) Anyway, the Spectrum. Jian got annoyed with the screaming teeny-boppers who shouted at the wrong times, drowning Friu out. I don't recall why he was using "monogamy" and "polygamy" but the way they were shrieking at everything, we all got the impression they were yelling at anything that came out of his mouth, whether they understood it or not. He finally told them to read a dictionary. (Everyone over 18 in the hall snickered) I much preferred the show two years later which was half deserted and in a small club. Not only are smaller shows fun (as someone who only sees a cappella other than Fru, I go to small-hall shows a lot.. :)) and intimate, but the crowd was older. My first Fru show was '92 and at Club Soda in '95, I recognized lots of faces I'd seen over the years 'ka (Who has just realized she hasn't worn her Fru-Vest in years... :) ) - -- Http://www.geocities.com/sunsetstrip/4762 Northern Harmony Canadian A Cappella Festival, 1999 in Edmonton * Try your hand at a cappella trivia - http://www.a-cappella.com * ------------------------------ End of alt.music.moxy-fruvous digest V3 #416 ********************************************
