MP3 is some sort of compression program that allows digital files for sounds to be much smaller than they were pre-MP3. These files can be downloaded from various sites on the Internet, stored on a computer's hard drive, and played through the computer (with the proper software....sort of like if you play something through RealAudio). The files can also be downloaded into a sort of Walkman thing, which will play them. They are attractive because (1) they are perfect for pirating and trading and generally bypassing the controls of the official music distributers, so they're FREE, and (2) the quality is digital. It's not like your grandmother's bootleg. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 May 1999 06:19:48 GMT From: Larry Dietrich Subject: Re: Commercial recognition (was Re: post #2 - Fruvous Dream (long)) Srm9988n wrote in <19990513203811.13056.00000256@ng-fh1.aol.com>: >-- Lori, who loves paying $10 to stand 3 feet from Murray, and can't >imagine paying 25 times that to see him as a little HO-gauge figurine. Ah, but consider what's already happening. I saw them in Syracuse with my wife last month. That was $10 for each ticket. Fine. Plus a handling charge from Ticketmaster, the only source of tickets for Styleen's, of $3 per ticket, plus the extra Ticketmaster charge of $3 per order. The whole tab for tickets came to $29. Now, I pretended they were $14.50 tickets, and didn't mind paying it to see the band for the first time. And now that I've seen them, I know what a bargain that was. And I don't fault the band for the ticket policies at the club. But think of it this way....at $20 for our tickets, that's $5 per lad. If you throw in (forgive me, I'm not up to speed on the arcana here) Toby (?) and Cal (?), and that's less than $4 a person to them. Meanwhile, the evil Ticketmasters pocket $9. Doesn't seem fair. And THIS is with a FruFanFriendly band. Larry Dietrich .... You take a wav file and compress it into an mp3. so that teh say 300 mb file takes up only 3 or 4mb, but still has "cd like" quality. So what you could do is record songs off CD and play them off your comp. You can get them off the internet, which upsets many musicians/record compnaies who feel that this will hurt sales. On the other side many mp3 users will say that they use mp3's mainly in the case of live music that can't be bought on CD, or more foten when there is just one song you like and you wouldn't have bought the CD anyway, and therefor are not hurting sales. dan - -- "If cloning is outlawed then only outlaws will have clones" Sifyl humor of Dan and Stan: http://www.angelfire.com/ny/worldupsidedown RITCK Online: http://www.angelfire.com/ny/ritcirclek ICQ: 6976841 IM: wwwwud ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 May 1999 13:35:16 GMT From: Ellen Subject: Re: New Holland 5/22 (was: possession and such) In article <19990513150154.19946.00000101@ng-ft1.aol.com>, srm9988n@aol.com.LoriM (Srm9988n) wrote: > Which again brings up the issue -- does anyone have the remotest idea > yet when > the lads are scheduled to take the stage? according to the folks at the campground, no. that is to be decided amongst the perfomers scheduled for saturday, and TBA when people get there (i.e. there will be a program given out upon arrival, i think). this may have changed since i talked to the people at spring gulch; if anyone else wants to call and pester them, please pass the news on here, because i'd love to know, too. peace, ellen (would also love to know what is going to be discussed at the "Moxy Fruvous Workshop." i'm picturing 4 Canadian Guys Being Unrehearsedly Wacky. ;) *************************************************** The point of the journey is not to arrive. - --== Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ ==-- - ---Share what you know. None of them existed before some mogul decided to put together a hot act that would make them a lot of money. Fruvous, on the other hand, is already an established band. Besides, the Fruvous guys are too old to be even considered a teeny-bopper band. How many of those acts you mentioned are even old enough to vote? I won't deny Fruvous' obvious sex appeal, and I'm sure there are a LOT of young girls who will swoon over them, but I'm sure they don't have any reason to fear being classified as a new New Kids on the Block. > What if Fruvous get swept into some horrible category it can't escape > from? In Fruvous' case, it's core audience has been built via live shows, and as a result, most of those people are probably past puberty (unlike Hanson, N'Sync, Spice Girls, etc.) Of course, I don't have any marketing demographics to consult, but that would be my guess.
