Well Moxy Fruvous actually has three fishing songs... The first, "Big Fish" appeared on the b album and has rarely, if ever been performed live. The second fish song is "Fly". Most Fruheads misinterpret this tune as a song about a relationship, but if you look deep enough, you'll discover that it's actually about fly fishing. The lyrics talk about untying the rope (fishing line), holding your breath (in case the fish pulls you under), etc.... Give it another listen, you'll sea. The third fish song, probably the one of which you speak, is Pisco Bandito, soon to appear on the new album. It's a fun, upbeat song with Murray on lead guitar and vocals. It's supposedly about a bandit fish, but all the lyrics seem to refer to food, like noodles or apple strudel or Antonio Banderas (who any heterosexual woman will tell you is a gorgeous hunk of meat). You can find the lyrics on fruvous.com. jordan - -- Lazlo's Chinese Relativity Axiom: No matter how great your triumphs or how tragic your defeats---approximately one billion Chinese couldn't care less. ------------------------------ Date: 6 May 1999 19:43:31 GMT From: Musicstation Subject: *Do You Maintain a Fan Site for MOXY FRUVOUS? Lori, dear, love, honeybunches. That was the post of the month. Year. Decade. Millenium. How *did* you manage to put into words so concisely exactly what's been rattling about my head lately? One of the most insidious trends in a modern culture is the glorification of neuroses and victimhood. Why is it that people who insist that `no-one understands them' generally completely fail to be able to understand anyone else? On a related note I'd like to deeply offend feminists by pointing out that appearance pressure is not a gender politics issue. There is pressure to conform to an appearance norm whether you're male or female, and both males and females apply that pressure. Speaking as someone who can hide behind lamposts with room to spare I get constant criticism about my skinniness, and I get just as much (if not more) criticism from women as men. I could also point out the following example -- a friend who is 4foot 11 was looking through the lonely hearts column and *every single* women seaking men ad required a man that was tall. As far as clothing goes women have considerably more choices than men in what they wear. Take for example skirts -- women can choose whether they wear skirts or trousers without exciting much comment. If you want to see *real* social pressure on appearance, be male and wear a skirt. I speak from experience. Strangely, you rarely hear men compiling theses about how a feminine dominated society oppresses male clothing rights. Only this morning I was painting my front door and got abuse hurled at me by a passing group of women for wearing a brightly coloured hat (I was only wearing it to keep my hair out of my eyes. Actually there's another example -- hair styling and length -- women can do *whatever they like* with their hair, if men do anything more exciting than short back and sides then our sexuality is immediately questioned). That group of women were quite obviously unthinking and rather offensive. I would never use that fact to impune all women though or claim some sort of victimhood for myself. If people (men or women) are so vapid as to judge by appearances then that's their own stupid fault and it is themselves that are demeaned and they victimise themselves, not the person they judge. AJ should be free to shave whatever bits of himself he wants to. So long as he cleans the sink out afterwards. Lastly, a statement like `all men judge women by breast size' is not only plainly untrue, its also very heterocentric. Many, many, many men very dear to me couldn't care less about womens' breasts. Speaking as someone who can hide behind I'm not deeply offended. :) I can't understand why you don't see this as a gender politics issue though. Yes, there are appearance standards whether you are male or female. In fact there is pressure to BE male or female, which is not very pleasant for people who do not want to identify as either. But being a man and not being able to wear a dress is about gender and power. It comes in part from the heterosexism of our society (a man wearing a dress must be gay, which is of course bad), and also in part from plain sexism (he's a man, the dominant gender; why associate himself with the subordinate gender) and I'm sure other factors which I'm not going to ennumerate. > unthinking and rather offensive. If people > (men or women) are so vapid as to judge by appearances then that's their > own stupid fault and it is themselves that are demeaned and they > victimise themselves, not the person they judge. I think it's true that most people have the power to oppress others, and also are oppressed by others. A rich woman can oppress a poor woman, etc. Not all women are victims all the time. Most women are victized at some point. Men too. But men (white, heterosexual, middle-class or rich, Christian, etc. men) have historically been the oppressors in our world, and I don't think we can escape that fact. They have just had more opportunities and power. White women also now have a great deal of the same, and do use their power in negative ways. Just like anyone of any social position can do. > Lastly, a statement like `all men judge women by breast size' is not only > plainly untrue, its also very heterocentric. Many, many, many men very dear to > me couldn't care less about womens' breasts. This I agree with also. Although a gay male friend of mine told me last week he thinks I have "great tits," a comment I wasn't sure what to do with. I guess he was trying to boost my self-esteem. But that's neither here nor there and another topics for a gender politics debate in and of itself. > Not feminist, not masculinist, humanist, I'd like the label "humanist" too if it weren't for the atheistic connotations. At the moment "feminist" describes for me best the way I conceive of myself. That may change... Let me see if I can remember them -- Gabriel Garcia Marquez -- Love In The Time of Cholera William S Burroughs -- Naked Lunch bell hooks -- Bone Black Pierre Berton -- the start of some Canadian western trilogy, had a terrible time finding him because his last name is misspelled in the liner notes to Bargainville Mario Puzo -- The Godfather W. P. Kinsella -- Shoeless Joe Margaret Atwood -- Can't remember, because I've bought her several Atwood since Robertson Davies -- Fifth Business Michael Ondaatje -- The English Patient Doris Lessing -- The Golden Notebook Of course, when I was soliciting the newsgroup for ideas around that time, someone pointed out that there're a few other authors mentioned in the indie tape version. I didn't end up getting any of those. Nor, for that matter, was I able to get my hands on a Toronto Sun. Ah well. She appreciated the gift, but still hasn't read even half of them :-) If I remember correctly, when my fiancee told Murray about it, his response was, after an appropriately stunned silence, "Er, that's good for Canada!" -Joe, who's coming dangerously close to losing his "lurker" title. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 May 1999 18:31:45 -0500 From: "Lori Young" Subject: Re: moxy in seattle CHAD R.
