If you can't find them in stores, Primarily A Cappella (www.singers.com) carries them. In fact, I think they had some kind of exclusivity deal with PAC, so you may HAVE to go through them. Wow, that was eerie. That statement is word for word what my high-school friend Christina was in the habit of piping up and saying - usually when she'd just been sitting quietly enjoying the company of our group of friends and not acting inappropriately at all. And of course I've been known to apologize for my own weirdness around this group more than a time or two - I'll reserve judgment on whether it's actually needed an apology, or whether the embarrassment is all in my mind. I don't know; maybe both. But apologizing for the apologizing would certainly not be productive. I've been thinking a lot lately (as have many of us, I'm sure) about my high school days, about my "weird" friends, about feeling like an outcast, about the damage that can stem from intolerance and misunderstanding that just feed upon themselves. I don't really have anything to say about all that right now, except to suggest that we all remember to show respect for people, whether or not we approve of them. A smile and a nod to that "strange" stranger, rather than a stare of contempt, could make the difference in that person's day between feeling embittered and isolated, and feeling like a member of the human race. Enough people getting into this simple habit could make a difference in many lives. I know this wasn't at all what Lizzie was getting at; it's just my mind going off on tangents right now. But I'm not going to apologize for it. Not today anyway. k@ one guess what CD's been the soundtrack to my life this week ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Apr 1999 01:54:56 GMT From: Mindy J Munson Subject: Re: License Plate sighting! Since "Rockapella" was a limited release and is now officially out of print, you can also find it on the first Rockapella major US widespread release which came out this February. It is called "Don't Tell Me You Do" and has a picture of the suspension cables from some bridge on the cover in orange. Most of the songs are from "Rockapella" but there's a few new'uns. All their music is accessible through www.rockapella.com. Amen, Katrin. I'm with you on this. We on this ng, especially those of us beyond the cauldron of high school, seem to revel in our former (and perhaps present) geekiness, but too many of us *have* known the acute pain that comes from being so different as to be outcast. Why did Jian have so many of us crowing at the Troc: "We are hippies and geeks"? Because it's TRUE, and we've survived it (so far), and it's good to be able to acknowledge it in a place that's outside that pain, a place that feels welcoming and understanding instead of scornful and dismissive. But too many people don't have that welcoming place, that respite from the pain, or they don't find it often enough or soon enough to salve their wounds. And that in itself is a tragedy -- that so many people just don't notice, or actively ignore or ostracize, other, *different*, perhaps deeply troubled individuals. And then, sometimes, we are forced to pay attention -- and in disbelief, in horror over a more overt sort of tragedy that no one admits comprehending, we ask ourselves in an outpouring of shock, "why?" As if it's that big a mystery. - -- Lori ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Apr 1999 22:06:59 -0400 From: Joe Navratil Subject: Accents again (was Re: License Plate sighting!) > -- Lori, who's super happy with these newfangled umlaut lessons, and has been > busy experimenting with other combos, but hasn't yet figured out the ascii code > for the french e-accent-grave (or for the a-circumflex in "grave" for that > matter.) :) For all of you PC people, look under your Accessories folder off the start menu (Start->Program Files->Accessories) for the Character Map, or just type "charmap" at the Start->Run prompt. Pick a relatively complete font, and you can find every accent, caps & lowercase, and the corresponding keycode really easily.
