You do not have to buy a dress. I spent $350 on my dress last year (I'm a big girl, hard to fit) and NEVER AGAIN! You don't have to spend big bucks to look nice! 1> borrow from a freind... no one will remember. 2> hit a consignment shop. It's a step up from the thrift store, and they are bound to have dresses from last year, still fashionable. 3> if you were going to make a flapper dress, you can obviously sew. A chic pattern and a few yards of cloth can cost under $30, if you're thrifty! I just bought my pattern and fabirc and I wasn't trying to save money and it was still under $60. 4> check the clearence rack. My best friend just tried on a dress last week at Kaufmans (department store in NY) that was $12.50! 5> do what makes you happy. If you want to go as a flapper, go as a flapper and get your guy to wear a white tux of pinstripped suit. You'll tear up the dance floor! Sheesh... listen to me...
