It's the part of Chelsea -- I don't know whether it's considered a township or what, but "Chelsea" is 7 or 8 different places, such as Chelsea, Old-Chelsea, Kirks Ferry, Kingsmere, Cascades, Farm Point .... These people of the lovely Outaouais have a true identity crisis, one that surpasses mere language differences. But I *adore* all of Chelsea anyway. Where I live (in almost-the-middle-of-nowhere Connecticut) all the deer crossing signs were adorned years and years ago with those little round red bicycle reflectors on their noses. Apparently, Rudolph's offspring are the ones nosing around in my garden. :) leah p.s. Oh, yeah? Well, Indiana had this great idea to reduce "road rage" in construction zones by making bright orange, "happy" road signs. They posted them every half mile or so on I-65 between Chicago and Indy. The first few were just big, orange smily faces. Then they tried to be more creative and had some really, REALLY bad puns. The last few: Knock, knock... Orange... Orange you glad that there's only one more mile of construction? ... I always wondered how many rubber-neck accidents those things caused. ;) Koz ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Mar 1999 21:14:18 -0500 From: Michael Kosloski Subject: Re: Name spellings I think it's Mike who says it...and Jian got it on his second try, I believe... I saw them at the Bottom Line, and was fortunate enough to be sitting next to the lead singer's (Alan) cousin. So of course I had to stay after the show and meet him (and have a photo taken!). They played every song from Rant and Roar, and, like Fruvous, sound even better live. When they performed General Taylor it gave me chills. Enjoy the show! See, the thing is the religious differences really only cause problems in Northern Ireland. Which is a completely different contry from Ireland. It's like saying to a Canadian that they're American simply because they share the North American continent. And trust me, you don't want to do that! :) The reason that the differences exist is that, once upon a time, England occupied Ireland, and basically turned the Irish into slaves in their own country. When England granted Ireland independence it decided to hang on to a piece of the country. Why? No one quite knows. So now you've got two groups, the "Irish", who are Catholic (green) and want to rejoin the Republic of Ireland (the south) and the "English", who have in many cases lived in Northern Ireland for generations, but will always be viewed as English because they are Protestant. In Ireland itself, where my family is from, this is not a problem. My family did not move here to escape the fighting, as everyone assumes. Galway is no where near that. Although, I do have to say that the only time I've ever seen my grandfather get really, really, really upset is when the local chapter of the Orangemen set up in the mall to recruit new members. Somehow celebrating the masacre of thousands of Irish peasants (which is what the colour is associated with, William the Orange) really got to him. Anyway, end of history/political lesson. I'm going to return to my pint of Guiness now, and I hope everyone had as much fun on St. Paddy's day as I did! :) Veronica (Irish-Canadian, even though the last name would indicate otherwise) - -- *************************************************************************** "Never look at the trombones, | Veronica Gruneberg it only encourages them." | Dept. of Biology - Richard Strauss | Queen's University | Kingston, Ontario Leno: What is that you're playing?
