Here is Megan Sprague's question in the education & learning category: The school system... Hi, I'm a grade twelve student at Leaside High School in Toronto. I am out of school yet again, not because I'm on vacation, or skipping off, but this time because CUPE local 4400 is on strike because of a dispute with the Toronto District Board of Education. This means that all of the secretaries, janitors, teaching assistants (if those are anywhere to be found anymore!), lunch ladies, and other support staff are out. Most schools are staying open, but 21 had to close due to old boiler systems and more are due to close because it is just becoming unsanitary. This is my second last year and cannot afford to be missing all of this time! Last year we were off for two weeks because the teachers were protesting and this year the first couple of months were pretty much work-to-rule. There were no extracurricular activities or anything else that enriches the school experience. The reason for all of this? Well, most people will agree that it is the provincial Conservative government that is now in power. Since being elected they have done nothing but slowly destroy the city of Toronto. For some reason nobody seems to like Toronto. I have never understood this. Could someone please explain it to me? I have lived in Toronto my entire life and I love the place. The people here are for the most part kind, generous and friendly. Why do we get such a bad rap? Is that any reason to try to break us? The health care system is in awful shape, although I hear it's like this throughout the province. The education system, though, is going down the toilets! Things are just not the same quality as they used to be. I remember the good ol' days when we had field trips, and teaching assistants, and school dances! What has happened is that the government has taken over funding control. That was formerly left up to the municipalities. Now there is a 'funding formula' where everyone gets the same amount of money based on how many students (I belive). The problem is, Toronto has many educational needs. We have many ESL programmes, as ! well as meal programmes, and other diverse programmes. (I know, I know, I used the word programme three times in the same sentence…that's why I need to be in school, to learn more of these things!) I think it's very unfortunate that the very people that everyone seems to be fighting for are the ones being hurt the most. Please, for the sake of the children (corny, I know) let's do something about it! Personally (and I know I'm not the only one) I think the fault lies with the provincial government, since they are the ones with the purse strings. So please, if you live in Ontario, don't re-elect them! I'll be glad to support my request. Don't get me started about the whole Megacity thing! Unfortunately, I will be unable to vote in the election if they hold it in the spring as forecast since I will not yet be 18, but I know my friends will not be voting them in. Anyway, I'm always interested in all sides of the story, so if you happen to like what the Conservative government is doing I'd love to hear from you. Actually, I'd love to hear from you regardless, so I know that somebody actually read this thing! Anyway, thanks for reading. It's nice to have that off my chest. California overall had the highest gas prices, particularly LA, Orange and San Diego counties, though the highest single gas price I saw was for $1.80 per gallon in a remote Montana hillside villiage. The cheapest gas I found was in Oklahoma, Georgia and South Carolina. It seems that most gas price variations have to do with two factors: regional (state, county, etc) taxes, and competition. Gas taxes are the highest, it turns out, in Southern California, and lowest in GA and SC. So suburban GA and SC towns should have the cheapest gas, and downtown LA or remote desert Cali would tend to be most expensive. (Actually, South Dakota and Minnesota had fairly cheap gas, until my car noticed that it was 85 octane. It belched it right up, and I had to buy the more expensive 'premium' 88 octane in those states.) Personally, I am all in favor of higher gas taxes, particularly in other states. And gas tax revenue should be used for transportation infrastructure improvements. Nothing like letting the people who use roads the most pay for them. But then again, I am also in favor of more private toll roads, and seperation of commercial and non-commercial traffic. I also am working with a group of people studying the feasability of a 'pay at the pump auto insurance' program for the US, which sounds promissing. Not that any of you care.
