This humble semi-lurker did manage to get tonight (Wednesday night) off from work, however. Yay! So I did the Right Thing and carried myself off to the recently re-opened Calvin Theatre in Northampton, MA where the powers that be were holding the Iron Horse Music Hall's 20th Anniversary shindig. It was a gala concert featuring artists the likes of Tuck & Patti, The Bobs, Maura O'Connell, The Nields, Dave VanRonk and Salamander Crossing. (Okay, I know *some* of you out there are drooling, and rightfully so, but I do bring this back around to Fruvous in a bit...) So in between musical appearances, there were many anecdotes and tributes told of the past 20 years of the Iron Horse. At one point, someone shared from a selection of questions that had been asked of Jordi Herold in preparation for the anniversary concert. (Ofer, help me out here if I'm turning all the details around!) Questions asked include: What musical act had the most cancellations? (I've forgotten who, but the number was 3.) What group had the LOUDEST performance at the IH? Smashing Pumpkins Who was the OLDEST performer to play the IH? Elizabeth Cotton (at 90+) What now-famous performer(s) played for the SMALLEST audience? Tracy Chapman at 60 people Indigo Girls at 51 people And then... In 20 years, what muscial act has had the MOST RABID FANS? [1] And of course, the answer was Moxy Fruvous! Amidst not-very-quiet laughter from Ofer and me (and some others below the balcony whom I couldn't see), he said, 'See? There're some of them here tonight!' Just had to share that... I was duly amused. :) leah [1] btw, by the tone of the commentary, 'rabid' was meant here, in the best of ways... i don't think they're concerned with foaming at the mouth or anything. :) */*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/* Oh, this world is topsy-turvy and it is mine to eat. Anyway, I was humming quietly to myself today and I noticed that "Whistling in the Dark" by TMBG can be sung to BHotR as well -- at least the verses can...it got really hard come the chorus. Focus, exposure, etc. on-the-fly gives you a lot more to aspects to be aware of when shooting, but with experience, it will all become second nature. While the difficulty factor greatly increases with manual gear, the results can be fab. You're probably best off shooting an outdoor show, where there's plenty of light. Shooting an indoor show succesfully requires some pretty serious gear and knowhow. I haven't attempted to shoot an indoor event in years. DON'T use a flash, either. That's a general rule for ANY performance as it tends to blind whoever's on stage. Use fast film (at least ASA 400 if you can't find 800; you can also "push one stop"... E-mail me for an explaination of that.) Black & white film goes as high as ASA 3200 (!) which will give you plenty of lattitude, especially for an indoor gig. Use a fast lens if you can, one that opens to at least an f2. If you can find an f1.4, great. Telephoto and zoom lens, however, usually open to only an f3.5 or f4. If you don't have a telephoto lens, you'll really need to be right up at the stage. I can explain in more detail if you want, but experience is your best asset when it comes to shooting candid concert shots. So get that camera & start having some fun experimenting. When I returned and my friends asked me how it went, I invariably responded, "It was dreamy," and feigned a swoon. I behaved like I came from the pages of a teen romance novel and I knew it. There was something wonderfully cathartic about celebrating my 30th by regressing back to behavior associated with folks half my age--skipping class, hanging out with people I barely knew, screaming for a great band, having my picture taken with all of the bandmembers, having them sing Happy Birthday to me, and sleeping on someone's floor. I hope I can always hang on to the ability to do this. It seems that Früvous fans never lose this ability, eh?...I think that Früvous has a wonderful ability to bring out the kid in all of us.
