My GOD, FrüCon was awesome! (Look kids, I learned how to make an umlaut) (Having a boyfriend who's a computer whiz is great) Where should I start..? Okay, here's one. I noticed a coupla people introducing themselves. So I thought I'd start over. I have this obsessive nagging idea that I came into the NG on a bad start, what with my bizarre posts and secretive aliases. SOO...Hi. My name is Stephanie Hodges. But I never liked the sound of my name, too perky-80s I suppose, and I dubbed myself Frü-Monique for the NG pleasure. And, c'mon, doesn't "Monique" just leave a more pleasant sound on your tongue? Lately I've been answering to "Steph," and tho I've always hated it, it's starting to grow on me. So call me whatever the hell you please. I'm still me. Alrighty, with that out of the way, here's what you came to read: First, DAVE!! Eek! Was he not ¤adorable¤ on Friday the 13th? I taped it too, and I plan to watch over and over again. :) :) And now about the weekend. Tom: Rowsdower! It was so spiffy to meet a fellow MST3Ker. Love the hat! You rock, man. :) Katrin: Foof on you. You didn't acknowledge me in your post. :P I guess I'll just have to steal yer husband away with my massage techniques... Mike Wood: Great comic! I love seeing how other artists interpret the lads. Maybe my comic will be ready next year. Mike Wood: Thanks for the tour! And putting up with us who prefer vegetarian cuisine over Pizza Pizza. Josh Woodward: WHERE'S MY TAPE!? Kidding. ;) Consider this the first of the bombardment of emails I'm--LOOK! Leather store!! *grin* And Hi Sara! Früchick: I don't know if you're reading, but I had to express my appreciation somewhere. It was great to hang out with a true expert. I learned lots of, um, interesting things about certain people. ;) And thanks for the cherry Pez! Mmm. Andy (Tim!): Ooh. I love massages. Not as much as some of the people who have received them in the past, I take it...thanks for keeping me amused whilst Stage Dave. Kevin: *wide grin* You are much cooler to hang out with in person, because you can't disappear to work like on IRC! And I swear that was the best time I've ever heard "Fly" in my life. ;) I gotta get an egg shaker. And keep my teeth in shape. LOL. So...does gin and tonic taste better when you lick it off one's hand? Just curious. :P :p :P :p Racheal: See what happens when you roadtrip with people you meet via internet? (or is that via TMBG shows?) Those five days were so awesome, and I don't think we could've gotten around Tronno without you. Did you take Chad's advice? *grins, awaits smack* We love tie line! Silly Yogen Früz. And finally, Lacey: That was the BEST. I don't even recall not liking Monarch and crew. The greatest thing about long trips is that you forget the bad stuff and the good stuff sticks in your mind. It was awesome to meet ya, little Fresh Früz, and I can't *wait* til Falcon Ridge. That's when the real henna party is! Heh..what a post it has already been! Not quite yet. Well, it would be difficult to add more to the already very good reviews of the shows so I'll just ramble a bit about most impressions of the weekend and maybe pose some questions. Due to the nature of my trip (drive there, drive back, sleep when I could, etc etc) I appear to have missed out on meeting a lot of new people. Although it must be said, Angie, you rule! That being done. Here are things that I have observed (in no particular order). * rosemary is an awesome host * frucon was great, although very organized. some think that is good, I'm more of a fan of informal chaos. * beer in canada is cold and served in bottles and if you drink enough of them you hardly notice the couple making out infront of you. *laugh* * be wary of who you stand next to, lest they burst out with the "way to go murray" tag line. * a broken pitch pipe is bad thing, thank goodness there are doctors in the house. * a good hug requires that you injure the people around you while twirling the receiver into onlookers. * nothing wrong with requesting the band tour the holy land. * when in doubt, take a left and another left and another left.... * the two kids who sang boss will never have problems finding a woman in their lives. (*laugh* you could feel the estrogen swell.. ) Well, I can't think of anything else I could add. On a more serious note; what songs do you think are locks for the new album? (a couple I am pretty darn sure about, but others I think are iffy) Well, I'll go back to tomorrowland. ISTR reading in (I think) the Sunday Time Colour Supplement a while back that Agas haven't exactly gone down a storm in North America. Certainly not to the extent that they have here. Something tells me that the Aga's slow, steady pace doesn't match up with the North American lifestyle. When I grow up and get very rich, I'll definately be buying one as they are most splendid devices (does that make me a Yuppie? If so, I don't care - I want one!). However as they start at about two thousand pounds when second hand, I think I'll have to wait for a while. Plus if I do manage to get my narrowboat in the next couple of months it won't fit too well (Aga's weigh upwards of a half a ton and have to be fitted by specially trained fitters). An Aga is more than just an oven. It not only cooks food like a normal oven but also heats the room, dries your clothes, keeps your stockpot warm forever, etc, etc. For those still puzzled as to what its like, imagine a large cast iron range that self loads its fuel from a hopper behind it. Its always on. Its always warm. You always have dry socks and tea towels. No need for central heating or gas fires if you've got an Aga. I remember staying with one of my chums over New Year a few years back at his parent's house in deepest rural Shropshire (which is about as rural is you get in England) and found that an Aga is a great place to sleep next to. Quite a lot of us were there and I managed to bag the kitchen floor in front of the Aga. Whilst everyone else was a tad chilly come the morning, I was still toasty warm (as was their dog and cat that had curled up with me). The others came down, we opened the oven doors and everyone sat round it with their feet up on the handrail to warm up. Meanwhile it was cooking the porridge for breakfast and had the stockpot ticking over ready for some warming broth later in the day. As I said, a most splendid device. Depending on what your use in college would be, it sounds to me like you would do better with an manual camera. One my photography professor saw many, many, many of was the Canon AE-1 -- it's an excellent manual camera, available used at a lot of good camera stores, and it was built to last several lifetimes. It was my first camera, but I'm not too brand specific... I just know it's one of the more popular ones out there. Minolta, Nikon, and Argus are probably the other three brands you'll see lots of. Personally, I don't recommend Pentax, but I've never owned one -- all the friends that did, had no luck with them. If you're getting into this for something more than just taking better pictures of the occasions you already shoot, you will learn to like manual focus. If you're getting into this simply to learn to do better with what you've already got, go with something relatively idiot-proof. Also, if you wear corrective lenses, you'll need to have them at all times while using manual focus, whereas autofocus... well... it tries.
