The local radio station has a "cheesey tunes at noon" show called "Velveeta lounge" and I was planning to sleep in today, and set my alarm for noon. When I awoke, there's this male voice on the radio asking "Can you play Psycho Killer by the Talking Heads and me, I'm just lying there going "Wow, is Nashville celebrating Fruvous today? I went there already being a big fan of Sarah Slean, and went away totally adoring Susan Werner as well. I just wanted to say that it may be a large combination of things working against you here. Most likely it is your film speed, your camera, and the place where you develop film, all to a certain degree. Film speed is one of my biggest things -- people always assume you *have* to shoot fast film to get good pictures in the dark. This doesn't really matter, if your camera can handle it. Although I would recommend moving up to film that is ASA 400 if you are currently using 100 or 200. There are faster films out there (800, 1600, 3200) but they're totally unnecessary as they will typically be too grainy. Your camera. Now this is a very big issue because it could be expensive, or it could be cheap, and you have no guarantee of how it will perform for you. Typically, if it is fixed-focus and "idiot proof" it's the idiot. It has little metal strips by the film loading area where it will read your film speed. This can be faulty. If it has a built-in flash, it probably won't synchronize for a picture of anything further than 10 feet away. In other words, it's not smart enough to know how to adjust. I suspect the problem is partially the flash vs no flash issue, which means it's not smart enough to leave the shutter open long enough to get a full image. There is also bad lighting. What we see with our eye is *not* what the camera sees. Blue light is a cold white -- it should suffice. Yellow, Orange, and Red lighting is iffy at best, but you tend to lose a lot of detail within them. Green is sort of neutral, but it can wreak havoc with what you get on your pictures. Also, stadium lighting may look like bright white light, but it's not. It's actually not very *light* at all. Then there is your local WalMart vs your photographer's lab. WalMart is going to stuff your film canister into a machine which will pull the film through several rollers, etc. Scratches are the elast of your worries -- they print everything to a 25% gray. There are probably things on your negatives that would look better if they printed true blacks. And there are probably pictures which would look better at 10%, as well. I prefer taking my negatives somewhere that I'm comfortable haggling over the quality of my prints. I am the one paying for them, after all. If you think they can do better, ask them to. Specify if you want them to try something lighter or darker. Play with it. If you know there was a lot of red light, ask if they can do some color correction for that fact. Etc. You just may find your pictures are not trash after all. I thought it was very well organized, the planning committee did a great job. My favorite part was being able to watch some of the video footage. Truth be told, I could have sat in front of the TV all day, but had to pry myself away from that room and force myself to be sociable. My only complaint was that I didn't win any of the raffle prizes +ACo-grin+ACo-. So, if we could change that next year, it would be much appreciated+ACEAIQ- The turnout was great, the count I heard was somewhere in the neighborhood of 290 people. I guess we'll be looking at reserving a bigger place next year, eh? It was just a lot of fun meeting some of the people who post on the ng. I now have a lot of faces to put to the names... Probably the highlight of the day was watching the kids do +ACI-Boss+ACI- for the lads (the 2 boys who dressed as Budgie dogs in NoHo). I have never laughed so hard in my life+ACEAIQ- They absolutely nailed it... bumps, grinds, and all... So anyway on to the review... Well, it was STILL cold waiting outside Lee's+ACEAIQAh- Before we got in line, we went across the street to grab a slice at the Pizza Pizza. Hee hee. Same story as the night before, waited and waited, got inside, staked out that second row (stage Murray...) and slowly thawed out. Susan Werner opened, and was EXTREMELY well received. She was a hoot+ACE- And we got an encore... with Jian and Dave. The night was off to a very promising start... The very promising start blossomed into what has been the BEST Fr+APw-show I've seen yet. The energy was incredible, on stage and throughout the crowd. Everyone I talked to agreed that this was one heck of an incredible show. Setlist and my random thoughts... Michigan Militia - I LOVED to see the set opened with this one. It just set the mood for a totally rockin' evening. Jockey The Present Tense Tureen - YAY banjo+ACEAIQAh- Johnny Saucep'n - needless to say always a crowd favorite. I get mesmerized watching Murray with that grater... When She Talks - hadn't heard this one before tonight. Didn't leave much of an impression on me. There are lots of the +ACI-new+ACI- songs that I like a whole lot more... I Love My Boss - I know that some people feel this song should be given a rest, but I disagree. I can't get enough of it. And it was especially relevant after the performance we got from the younguns at the 'con... Half As Much If Only You Knew Independence Day - please please please let this one make the album+ACEAIQ- I ADORE this tune... Minnie the Moocher - 'twas awesome+ACE- River Valley My Poor Generation - I love this song. Mistra Know-it-All - YAY+ACEAIQ- The first song of the weekend (excluding the new ones) that I'd yet to see live. Loved it... especially the bass solo (as if I need to say it...). You Will Go to the Moon - way to go, Murray+ACEAIQAh- So then we get a +ACI-way to go Murray jam+ACI-, thanks to Brent. It was absolutely hilarious+ACE- Perhaps the highlight of the evening... being the +ACI-Murray's people+ACI- that I am... and look forward to the new Fr+APw-vous album, entitled +ACI-Way to Go, Murray+ACI-. I Will Hold On King of Spain Green Eggs +ACY- Ham (short) BJ Don't Cry Psycho Killer Horseshoes Dancing Queen - YAY+ACEAIQ- Lou+ACEAIQ- Early Morning Rain - so, isn't there a campaign out there to get this one on the new album? My undying support... Again, this was just an incredible show. The setlist seems almost ordinary, but the electricity in the air was unequaled. And I have to mention our most efficient use of Fr+APw-space on the way back to the hotel... 10 Fr+APw-heads in Michelle's mini-van... not too bad+ACE- And from this experience came our catch phrase of the weekend... +ACI-YOU were in the van last night...+ACI- +ACI-Can we all fit around this table?+ACI- +ACI-YOU were in the van last night+ACEAIg- +ACI-Can we all get into Andy's car?+ACI- +ACI-YOU were in the van last night+ACEAIg- Took a long time to come down from this show. - -- over 'n' out xoxoxo bridget (o: please visit my (perpetually under construction) home page... ... and sign my guest book... http://www.geocities.com/sunsetstrip/pavilion/3576/ 'Thanks for the pizza, Kevin... sorry about the gay hooker.' :Fruwench, 02/22/99, sometime around 3 in the morning... ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Feb 1999 20:04:38 -0700 From: "Bridget" Subject: February 19 review Fr+APw-con weekend, ho+ACEAIQAh- My day started at 3 in the morning (Denver time)... caught a 5:30 flight to Toronto, pretty darn uneventful. Got to Pearson about noon, met Traci at 2, and cabbed it to the hotel together. I think the customs guy at Pearson thought I was a little flaky... since I was meeting Trace, I didn't bother to remember the name of the hotel, and therefore drew a complete blank when he asked me where I'd be staying... OOPS+ACE- Had a good time meeting my roomies... Trace, Kevin, Fr+APw-wench, and Amy. Hmm... traveling hundreds of miles to another country to share a room with 4 people I'd never met... isn't Fr+APw-headism great?+ACE-?+ACE-? Hung for a while, then decided to get on over to Lee's. After a lengthy debate about where to catch the TTC, which direction to go, etc. we finally find the venue. OK, Toronto is COLD+ACEAIQAh- Why do we do this to ourselves? Whose idea is it to have the 'con in February, anyway? My theory is that it's some sort of sick and twisted way to prove our love and devotion. Well, I guess we will never be accused of being normal... Anyway, after an eternity, we got in out of the cold... I found myself stage Murray (YAY) second row. Met lots of other fr+APw-heads, which I enjoyed, once I could feel my toes... There seemed to be just an overall +ACI-good+ACI- feeling about the whole scene. Lee's Palace is VERY similar to the Fox Theatre in Boulder, so I kinda felt at home a little bit. Sarah Slean opened. I enjoyed her OK, but seemed a little mellow to open for Fr+APw-vous. Really enjoyed the cello. Finally Fr+APw-vous+ACEAIQAh- My last fix was the Kirkland Arts Center on December 4th, so I'd been going through some major withdrawal. Setlist and my random thoughts... Sahara (extended) - it was kickin'. I love the extended jam more and more every time I hear it. And after meeting Trace +ACY- Fr+APw-wench, I have a new appreciation for the dumbek... Too Careful - from hearing what others have to say, it sounds as though I am in the majority in TOTALLY digging this tune+ACE- Plus, it's got a Colorado reference. Granted, not a very favorable Colorado reference, but a Colorado reference all the same... Definitely one of the best +ACI-new+ACI- songs. Jockey - I love this song, but we've all heard it SO many times. I was hoping to hear some obscure, rarely played stuff this weekend... Moon - OK, so this is NOT one of those +ACI-rarely played+ACI- songs, BUT... I've said it before, I'll say it again... I will NEVER get tired of seeing the lads perform this one. I Will Hold On - We've decided this seems almost like a stalking song... not unlike +ACI-Every Breath You Take+ACI- by The Police. Hmm... Dig it+ACE- Pisco Bandito - ranks right up there with +ACI-Too Careful+ACI- for the best new songs... King of Spain - well, it seemed a bit early in the set for the infamous monarch to appear. We joked that they were almost done (although we should never never NEVER joke about such things). Boo Time - only the second time I've seen this one. Loved it+ACE- Jammed about the liquid gifts Dave's receiving for his birthday. Very funny+ACE- Earthquakes - my first time hearing this song. I can't really remember it+ACE- I THINK I liked it... Sad Girl - another of my faves. The Kids' Song - +ACo-grin+ACo-... That's all I have to say about that... River Valley Get in the Car Grudge - OK, I LOVE this song... I LOVE this song... I LOVE this song+ACEAIQAh- Fly Independence Day - they had to start twice, Mike broke a string the first time. This was the first time I'd heard this. All the good things that have been said about it on the ng were accurate, and then some+ACEAIQ- Spiderman (lounge version) - had never seen this version performed before. It is so totally groovy. Michigan Militia Darlington Darling - has been and still remains my FAVORITE live tune. Upbeat, energetic, GREAT tonight+ACE- Love Potion +ACM-9 - I wish I wish they'd play +ACI-Signed Sealed Delivered+ACI-, +ACI-Dancing Queen+ACI- and +ACI-Billie Jean+ACI- more often. I like Potion, but hear it all the time... If Only You Knew - I've read/heard over and over and over again that this full band version pales in comparison to Mike going solo. I've heard it performed both ways, and while Mike's solo version is tender and moving, I have absolutely NO gripe with the full band version. I think it's a great song either way. Psycho Killer - rockin'+ACEAIQ- The Drinking Song - I do believe EVERYONE in the place was singing along. Very powerful. This was a great show (in my limited experience). It was a lot of fun to be in a place where the majority of the listening audience was not just familiar with Fr+APw-vous, but true, die-hard fans (aka Fr+APw-heads). The energy in the place all night was unbelievable. I thought it seemed like a long set, but everyone I talked to said it was pretty standard. I can say that I have NEVER been so exhausted after a show as I was for this first one of the weekend. After traveling all morning, meeting so many wonderful people, and seeing a truly great, energetic set by the lads, I was completely wiped. And not only did we have the Canadian cold to deal with, but it was darned windy+ACEAIQAh- I didn't warm up until Fr+APw-vous came on... Well I was kinda worried tonight that we wouldn't get a full set, since there were 3 opening acts... and the doors opened late. Much to our surprise (and delight), Tory Cassis came out only about 15 minutes or so after we got in. I'd never heard him before, I enjoyed it. Then Sarah Slean again. Then Susan Werner. Susan was definitely a crowd favorite this weekend. I certainly wouldn't mind seeing her open for Fr+APw-vous again sometime. I thought I was in the twilight zone or something for the opening acts. There was only about 10 minutes between each set, INCLUDING between Susan and Fr+APw-vous. This isn't Fr+APw-vous time+ACEAIQAh- No complaints, though... The crowd seemed a little thinner, although still energetic. We theorized that a lot of people left for home before the show. Suckers... We had an excellent vantage point. We were stage Dave (I guess change IS good every once in a while)... as Chad says, stage Murray is old hat. We were on the platform at the side of the stage, so at eye level with the band. Had lots and lots of Mike eye contact tonight. YAY+ACEAIQ- Plus we were all armed with egg shakers and stuffed animals and all sorts of toys. And I suppose the chocolate covered espresso beans added a bit to the fr+APw-volity... OK, we were totally wired+ACEAIQAh- But considering it'll be a while before any of us can get another Fr+APw-fix... Setlist and my random thoughts... Sahara (non-extended) - hey, an early opportunity to put those egg shakers to use+ACEAIQ- Laika - YAY+ACEAIQ- Too Careful - YAY+ACEAIQ- Horseshoes - I was surprised that they did this twice over the weekend... I Love My Boss - more egg shaking action... Sad Girl Pisco Bandito - they put the apple strudel line back in this weekend... +ACo-grin+ACo-. Angel - Sarah Slean song with Sarah on vocals. Michigan Militia - OK, it ROCKED+ACEAIQAh- Today's the Day that We Fight Back - very appropriate for the benefit. Hadn't seen the lads perform this one before, it was great. Present Tense Tureen Johnny Saucep'n Summertime - with Susan Werner. Incredible. Then we get a long banjo jam (with Susan) that starts +ACI-You Shook Me All Night Long+ACI- and somehow ends up +ACI-It's A Small World+ACI-. BANJO OVERLOAD+ACEAIQAhACEAIQAh- Not that it's bad thing... King of Spain - no intro... Green Eggs +ACY- Ham Darlington Darling - Mike made a great save after starting with the wrong verse. Works in a line dedicated to his wife. Very cool... Love Potion +ACM-9 Fly Brown-Eyed Girl - this totally made my night. Not only do I ADORE the song, but the Fr+APw-version is so bouncy.... The Drinking Song - for whatever reason, it was extraordinarily powerful tonight... great crowd participation... electricity was created that hung in the air long after the last note was sung. And after the lads left the stage, we got the King of Spain dance mix, which just prolonged the party atmosphere. We stayed 'til we got kicked out... This was a phenomenal weekend, and I hate to say I have any complaints... well, not COMPLAINTS, but observations... we didn't get +ACI-Downsizing+ACI- this weekend... )o: I adore that song. AND... in three shows, THREE TIMES, Murray's silver lam+AOk- hat was placed on stage... as if to taunt us... JUST ONCE I WANT TO SEE THE LONG VERSION GREEN EGGS +ACY- HAM+ACEAIQAhACEAIQ- Is that TOO much to ask?+ACE-?+ACE-? I also thought +ACI-Message+ACI- was sort of conspicuous by its absence. Thought we'd hear that at least once this weekend. No +ACI-Authors+ACI- was rather strange. I've heard a couple people mention that they were surprised +ACI-Gulf War+ACI- wasn't played. I've seen it performed twice (hee hee), so it doesn't bother me. I do feel that it's a song they'd RATHER perform off-mic, and Lee's is not really very conducive to that. And not a dent was made it my +ACI-MOST WANTED+ACI- list... STILL wanna see +ACI-Raja+ACI-, +ACI-Love Set Fire+ACI-, +ACI-Nuits de Reve+ACI-. There's always next time... And we did feel a little cheated... we thought we should have gotten +ACI-It's Too Cold+ACI-... since that was everyone's motto this weekend... So now I'm home, trying to get back into the swing of things.
