The footprint was measured at 4mm. The child screamed for a solid two hours after birth at an ear piercing 44.1kHz, but DDS specialists (aural doctors?) insist this is normal. MRS Doctors have certified the child is 100% error free. Chris and Vika have decided on the name KAO Daten Kassette. There has been some concern that unauthorized clones will be made of the tike, but RIAA engineers have assured the proud parents that SCMS is properly implemented and should thwart any attempt to bootleg their child. I would guess that Early Morning Rain pre-dates Gord's Gold as frutunes go. Early Morning Rain was played during the 1/23/93 concert at the Tivoli in Hamilton ON which is available in RealAudio (not great quality). That show is a really good listen because it lets you hear the screaming roaring fans and some of the stuff they did before they had lots of albums to choose from. It's got the Indie versions of songs, plus lotsa unreleased stuff like Early Morning Rain, Canada We Love You, Marion Fruvous, Poor Napolean, Blow Wind Blow, That's Any Good, and lots of others. Check it out from a link at FDC (http://www.fruvous.com/media.html). I know there are lots of prolific writers on this NG -- I have the packed folder of the digests on my hard drive to prove it. I'm looking for one of your prolific someones to act as a Fruvous correspondent for a kind of next-generation literary and culture magazine, called INKBLOTS. INKBLOTS has been around in various forms for going on five years now, and ever since the beginning we were fairly serious Früheads, promoting the band in our own little circles, giving great cheers when the Fruvous Four appeared on NPR, and presenting the band with a copy of the magazine a few years ago in Cleveland after a show. (One of our associate editors is still giddy from the Jian encounter. Personally, I think that 'Jian smell' y'all keep going on about is pheremones, plain and simple.) At the beginning of 1999, INKBLOTS started over with a second series and went online, and is now available at www.dreamsbay.com. We're planning to start the print issues going again later this year, but now we're assembling a new team of regular contributors and correspondents (as well as collecting fiction, poetry, reviews, artwork and op-ed pieces). The new team will contribute to the site and then possibly have their work included in the print version this autumn. This also includes little perks like business cards and T-shirts, but it's primarily a fairly laid-back affair. We need a Fruvous Correspondent. That is, we need someone who follows the band fairly regularly to collect photos, forthcoming shows and appearances, possibly interviews, and ESPECIALLY information on NEW ALBUMS. The site is updated at least once a month, with erratic little updates every couple of weeks. There is no money involved, but lots of good karma and bylines. :) I invite anyone interested in the project to check out the website, nose around a little bit, and then send me an email at glong@dreamsbay.com. Please include a list of reasons why you should get the position, any previous work in print or online, and some biographical information; the subject line should read FRUVOUS POSITION. Anyone interested in submitting anything else (reviews, poetry, etc.) should include their text in the body of the email, the biographical information, and the line INKBLOTS SUBMISSION in the subject line. Should you be selected, you may be asked to send a headshot or a cartoon of yourself in GIF or JPEG format for our contributor information section. There, I think that's all that needs to be said regarding that... :) Thanks, everyone! Cheers! If there's one thing in this life that I *absolutely* disagree with, its capital punishment. Between them Lori and AJ have perfectly summed up both my feelings and rationality about capital punishment and there seemed little point in my thundering in with a big emotional rant that would have added little. Cough, but... Vika Zafrin wrote: > The issue is substantiation, and > objectivity. I cannot in good faith agree with anyone who takes a > firm stance on this very controversial issue without having solid > grounding for their argument. Solid grounding is a subjective thing, Objective anti-capital punishment arguments... It is no deterent. I believe that there is no difference in the crime rates in the states that have capital punishment and those that don't. Executing terrorists creates martyrs. God only knows what sort of blood bath would still be going on in Northern Ireland if the British Government had started officially killing people (instead of just doing it unofficially). In allowing Bobby Sands to die the government handed a massive PR victory to the IRA, which probably prolonged the war for ten years or so. In the bad old days every time Parliament voted on capital punishment then the IRA usually managed to perpetrate some revolting outrage on the same day in order to try and swing opinion behind the death penalty. There's nothing terrorists want more than to show that the establishment they are terrorising holds human life in even less regard than they do. Innocent people get exceuted. Apparently (feel free to correct me if I've got this wrong, because I can't remember where I heard it, probably Amnesty) 75 innocent people have received the death penalty in the US since 1976. That's a bigger mass murder than Kevorkian managed. Who is being held responsible for this? If we had the death penalty here the Birmingham 6 and the Guildford 4 would have almost certainly been hung. And they're innocent, as innocent as you or me. Why are their innocent deaths any less abhorrent than the innocent deaths in OKC? To me any one of these arguments is reason enough to refute any argument in favour of state sanctioned killing. There are of course, many more subjective arguments pro and anti the death penalty. I've tried to contain myself to objective anti reasons. If there are objective pro reasosns I'd be interested to hear them. > If you argue that economic > concerns should not be taken into account when considering capital > punishment, you are ignoring the sad truth that money does rule the > Western (and increasingly Eastern) world, and there is no escape from > that. I have to admit that the first time I heard an economic argument for the death penalty was on ammf and it made my blood run absolutely cold. Justice should be totally impartial; *especially* to economics. The fact that the Western world is obsessed with the profit motive should not be used as an excuse for even more amorality. I was assured on IRC that economic arguments for the death penalty were fundamentally different to economic arguments in favour of killing the terminally ill and disabled. Really? Why? I can feel a free-form jazz rant coming on so I'll stop now. City Paper. Most of it is rehash for anyone who tunes into the newsgroup, but here's the copy...... ** TROC YOU ** "WE will NOT be playing the Troc again," wrote Jian Ghomeshi, the long-haired singer/drummer for the Canadian pop quartet Moxy Früvous, in a statement posted on an online bulletin board, alt.music.moxy-fruvous. Ghomeshi, whose band played a sold-out Troc on Feb. 6 after a long history of sell-outs at the smaller TLA, said the move to the larger venue - made possible by repeated play by concert sponsors WXPN - was not worth the abuse he felt his fans endured. Addressing the band's fans, Ghomeshi wrote: "We were all frustarted and upset at the way people were treated by the staff of the Trocadero on Saturday. I hate the notion of some one paying to see us perform and leaving with a bad taste in their mouth[s] due to unnecessary rude security staff and harsh club policies. I sincerely wish to apologize on our behalf." After a typical Moxy Früvous show, band members mingle with the Früheads, as they're called. But this didn't jibe with the Trocadero's policy, enforced after every show, of clearing the crowds out when the house lights come on. "We in the band were completely unaware that our fans were being kicked out of the venue as soon as the show ended. We came out to say our 'hellos' and realized the room had been emptied," Ghomeshi wrote. He and other band members talked with fans on the sidewalk outside the Troc, making sure to keep the door proped open lest it lock behind them. The problem might have been the unlikely intermingling of the Troc security staff, used to dealing with rowdy stagedivers, and the Früvous fans, who tend to be an oder, more mature crowd. A Trocadero representative declined comment because the show was actually booked by New Park Entertainment. Jesse Lundy, who promoted the show for New Park, would not discuss Ghomeshi's message, except to express his displeasure that such a big deal was made of the incident. (New Park is handling two other WXPN shows at the Troc, The Nields on Feb.20 and Dan Bern on March 25.) Lundy's sentiments were echoed by Jack Ross, the band's manger, who attended the show. He said neither he nor the band wanted to make it "more of a public issue other than what Jian said to his fans." Ross declined further comment, saying they have "energy focused in other directions," namely for recording the new album. - - Patrick Rapa (pat@citypaper.net) =========================================================== I think my favorite line is "older, more mature crowd." .....pfft....pffff.....
