I'm not sure how I got so busy at work. I've read all the comments about the rude Trocadero staff. I've been to this venue before, and it was never the kindest venue in town or anything, but never as bad as it was Saturday night for Fruvous. I don't know why they had to treat us like that, but I do know I won't go back there, even though I was all psyched to see The Nields there later this month. I guess I'll just have to see them some other time, somewhere else. I liked the opening act, though I don't know if I'd go out of my way to see them. It was interesting to see two bands in the same night with drummers who stand at front of the stage with a mini-drumkit. The wait between bands was awful. Someone said it was 45 minutes, it seemed like at least an hour to me. With nothing to do but stand on the crowded floor, listening to that horrible music they were playing, watching the roadie come down the steps, tune a guitar, go back up the steps, come back down, adjust the mikes, go back up, come back down, put out towels, go back up, etc. It was inexcusable to be kept waiting that long, in the dark. Literally in the dark. They never turned up the house lights during the break. I guess the Troc didn't want to pay the extra electricity that would have cost. I at first figured they didn't bother with the lights because it was going to be a very short break. After all, most of Moxy's stage was already set up before the opeing band played. The amount of preparations that were spread out over that 45 or so minutes could easily have been completed in 10 minutes. People were getting very annoyed; yes, at first they were yelling "Fruuuuuu", but later, it was booing, and hissing too. (I liked whoever it was that posted about Flyers fans making that sound whenever Luke Richardson "escapes a fight") By the time they finally hit the stage, my legs were killing me, my back was sore, and it took me a few songs for them to put me back in a good mood. The sound wasn't stellar either. Give me the TLA sound system any day. A few people already supplied the setlist and some comments, so I'll just add a few things I haven't seen mentioned yet. That line about Tobey's...(rhymes with rock) was at the end of Love Potion #9, not in Minnie the Moocher. Love Potion was the dueling-broken-strings version. Dave broke a string on the electric guitar seemingly before the song even started, and spent most of the first two verses trying to re-tune the guitar. Mike joined in the fun and broke a string on the acoustic about halfway through the song. As for Minnie, here are the verses I can remember parts of: first verse ended with "Minnie had a heart as big as John LeClair's goal output"; there was a verse about how up in Canada, they couldn't understand America's obsession with the Super Bowl, "That one game sends TV ratings soaring, it's too bad the game was so fucking boring"; something about staying home and jerking off to a furbie; and the last verse which Mike has been using lately, about Chelsea being a lesbian hooker. A most fun rendition of the song, with good audience participation. The crowd was very enthusiastic throughout. Murray told us after Minnie that the lyrics were guaranteed to be written 30 minutes or less before the show, or our pizza was free. I liked all the new songs they played. The two that especially made an impression were You Can't be Too Careful, and Independence Day. At the beginning of the show, they apologized that the DJ from WXPN who was supposed to come introduce them couldn't be there, they were at a Steppenwolf concert instead. Somebody with a very loud voice from the back yelled out, "LADIES AND GENTLEMEN...", and Jian looked in his direction for him to continue, so he said, "...STEPPENWOLF!" This same person also responded when they said, "we love you Philadelphia", with "WE LOVE YOU MOXY FRUVOUS!", and Jian commented, "it's good that you've elected a representative." I'm glad to see the band finally put some pennies together and purchased a real keyboard, with cool hippie sound effects and everything. Mike had fun with those hypnotizing effects during the long hippies-and-geeks improv bit, which started with the "think globally, act locally, think and act glocally" rap. I liked Mike's intro for King of Spain, he did the end of Rubber Biscuit ("whattaya want for nothing- rrrrrubber biscuit?"). There was also the Happy Birthday bit, and Dave started singing Oh Canada and then stopped, then sang all of The Star Spangled Banner instead. Ok, that's about all I can remember now. If anyone has a tape, pass it my way. - -Alan ------------------------------ Date: 8 Feb 1999 20:24:43 GMT From: gorbitron@aol.com (Gorbitron) Subject: Frucon Thursday Nighters?? I was so aggravated by the time I got my coat out of the coat check that I didn't stick around to say hello after the show, so if you could deliver the following messages to the guys for me, I'd be forever indebted: Murray--"Independence Day" is fantastic. I'll be looking for it this spring :). Get your hands on some American Smarties as soon as possible--you'll find them far superior to the Canadian variety :). Jian--"When She Talks" is beautiful. Tobey--Hopefully you found a place to park the van without a meter. Also, I hope it didn't get another ticket outside that terrible place--I noticed that someone removed the first one. to All--Thanks for another great night. You made my weekend :). The experience was vastly more valuable to me than the $200 I had to spend the next day to repair the radiator hose that blew approximately 1.5 seconds into New Jersey on the way home, leaving me stranded within sight distance of my high school but a half-hour from home, and on the Camden/Pennsauken border--but what can you do :)? The amazing memories of that show and the DC show the night before far outweigh the bad ones of watching coolant leak out of the bottom of my car and struggling to remember the self-defense moves I learned in high school gym. The doors opened about 15 minutes late, but that's more than acceptable. What was not acceptable, however, was the fact that the venue not only didn't provide free parking for the band's van (their _only_ vehicle, which consequently received a ticket), but they also had male bouncers frisking female concert-goers. While they didn't touch me, I noticed them performing frisks on female ticket-holders that were aimed at anything but confiscating illicit materials (the likes of which apparently included cookies and candy intended for the band, a long-standing practice common at most Früvous shows). The actual concert went off as wonderfully as all Früvous shows do, though the band was inexplicably late arriving onstage, the reason for which I am loathe to postulate. The most significant problems occured after the show had ended. Had the club any respect for the band's wishes, they would have understood that the band makes it a habit to meet their fans after the show, and that fans have a habit of buying a great deal of merchandise and talking with Tobey, their merchandise handler. Neither of these things occurred as we were herded out the doors rather forcefully. Both Jian (a member of the band) and Tobey were seen having animated discussions with venue employees, and Murray (another band member) was actually asked to leave. Did these people even make an effort to find out who was in the band, much less watch the show? As more fans were being hustled away from the front of the club, another band member who had come out to chat was denied re-entry to the building. I understand that the courtesy, respect, and affection with which the band treats their fans is at best uncommon, but it is my understanding that actions such as the ones I have described are taken when delineated by the band for their own protection, not because security is itching to get to the bar, a sentiment I heard at least one security guard express as he walked away from the doors, apparently tired of bullying confused fans. I voiced my disgust directly to Tobey after the show, and plan to forward this message to the band's management and personal e-mail account, and post it to the newsgroup dedicated to the band, alt.music.moxy-fruvous. I think I speak for many Früvous fans when I ask that in the future, the band be booked at a different venue, as I sincerely believe that many of us will not attend another show at the Trocadero. I know that (at least right now) I certainly wouldn't. Thanks for your concern; I wholeheartedly agree with Jian's sentiment that WXPN is the best radio station in the country, and hope to attend more 'XPN events in the future--though certainly not at the Troc. I had looked forward to seeing the Nields there next month, but now won't, if only because I refuse to invest any more time and money in a venue that so obviously has little respect not only for its patrons but even for the artists that play there. The kids behind me were yelling for some guy (i think it was the DJ who was supposed to be introducing them - Johnny Rock, or someone) and would not shut up. Ordinarily, this wouldnt be so irritating as the fact that they were constantly picking up the smallest of their friends and trying to crowd surf him. They really only succeeded in slamming his feet into innocent bystanders heads. I thought they might stop yelling for the DJ guy by the time Fruvous was done a few songs and they realized that he WASN'T COMING! But no, they kept on, especially during the long break in 'I Love My Boss'. Before the show, the group of three people to the right of me were also booing *very* loudly, which I found just plain mean. I turned around to look at them a few times, hoping they would get the hint. Instead, one of them just said to the other two "Look, she's getting pissed, keep going!" She later commented to her friends that "Only stupid kids with nothing better to do would stand for this." First off, I have *never* understood why people come to a concert just to boo the band. Second, its not as if the guys were chilling in their dressing rooms and thinking "Hey! Lets piss off our fans!" Obviously, if they aren't coming out, there is some sort of problem, which makes it really unfair to the band if you try to blame it on them. It also makes the fans look bad in general. Yeah, it sucks to wait, but in all reality, it wasnt that long. The people who were booing really have some issues to work out. It's not like going to McDonalds and bitching about the slow service. It's not their obligation to entertain you - they're doing it because they know people love to see live shows.
