I'd wait a bit and see if any sales occur soon. I know what you mean about airfares lately, though. My holiday flight from LA to Minneapolis was originally quoted at $425. I thought that was high, but the next week it had escalated to $997! I was sweating bullets. Two weeks after that (and two weeks before Christmas,) NW Airlines had a sale, and I got a ticket for $328. You've got plenty of time to wait to see if you can get it cheaper. A good idea is to also find a good travel agent and make them your friend. Be sure to pick one that you have a rapport with, kiss his/her butt, and you'll be amazed at the quality of service you receive! Good agents will check *all* airline flights (major, minor, and charters,) and will notify you of upcoming sales. Or, you can also try www.priceline.com and tell them how much you want to pay. A friend of mine managed to get a last-minute RT ticket from LA to Seattle for $120. If a plane isn't full, the airline might be willing to take less money rather than have empty seats. Good luck! Mid-February is in what's called a "shoulder season" meaning that airlines typically give deep discounts for travel then. Toronto is a funny destination, however -- Because it's a business center, midweek flights can be costly but weekend flights cheap. A recent example: You could fly from San Francisco Toronto on a Saturday with a return the following Mon-Tue-Wed for about $225. But if it weren't a weekend trip, it would have been double that. So play with the travel dates for one thing. Second, brace yourself for sales. Flights to Canada typically go down by as much as 40% around Jan. 15. Another option: gambling. Occasionally last-minute seats are cheaper than advance purchase ones. Finally, consider odd travel routings. You have nonstops on a couple of airlines from Boston to Toronto. But maybe a flight on Continental via Newark or Cleveland or USAirways via Pittsburgh or Philadelphia would save some coin. Might even get a deal flying via Montreal. Having said all this, I bought my ticket for FruCon travel already and paid way too much. Good luck. See you in Toronto. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 04 Jan 2000 09:18:59 GMT From: Rachael keeper of the yaks Subject: theatre band nerds. waay off topic and then some >>Whoa hey.. Chantry) Subject: OT: band nerds and theater Wow! Well you're looking at the quintessential theater and band nerd right here. I'm a junior in college and next year I'll be the drum major of the marching band and writing my honors thesis for drama. So there ya go. And because there's no way I can let all this debate on theater go by without a response... My favorite musicals are Chess (London version only), Les Mis (obvious answer), and Ragtime--to name a few. I also love Albee, Ives, Guare, and Shakespeare if we're talking straight plays. And the one thing I've learned from a decade or so in the theater (I admit my youth and, therefore, inexperience): It's hard to pick your favorites without being tainted by your own experience... for instance, would I love Shakespeare if I hadn't played Puck in 10th grade? And if you're playing in the pit you'll have a very different sense for the show, since your part could be extemely boring or extremely difficult. For instance, How to Succeed is a WONDERFUL musical but I wouldn't come within a mile of playing in the pit. And I personally think Secret Garden has some of the best (if not the best) vocal music out there. I also can think of fewer shows with more difficult music to sing... it's easy to screw up a show like that. Summary... if you are part of a cruddy production (directing, designing, on stage, backstage, in the pit, or in the audience), you're bound to dislike the show (don't even get me started on The Crucible). But if you have a lot of fun doing something like Oklahoma (not exactly a masterpiece), you'll be partial (I love Guys and Dolls). And in case anyone was wondering, when I was in 8th grade, I played Rheba in--that's right--You Can't Take it With You. : ) Kaitlyn "Airborn with nothing to land on..." ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 04 Jan 2000 15:07:47 GMT From: "Veronika Berchtold" Subject: Re: Minnie the Moocher Is anyone aot there who has got the lyrics to Minnie the Moocher. Actually, what many Canadians think will happen is an increase in prices due to an effective monopoly of major airlines in Canada. However, the government gave Air Canada (taking over Canadian Airlines) some conditions for the takeover, so the effects will be felt over a few years rather than immediately. So it probably won't affect prices for flights in February. One possible reason that FDC doesn't have the lyrics is that they change from show to show, to reflect the current political climate of the world and/or the locality in which the show is being performed, plus whatever else Mike's brain feels like coming up with that day. The opening generally goes like this: "Well, folks, let me tell you about Minnie the Moocher. She was one real hoochie-coocher. [Mikelyrics] Minnie had a heart as big as [Mikelyrics]. Heidi-heidi-hi (audience responds) hey-dee, hey-dee, hey (same) Awww, Minnie! (same) Wha-oh-ah-oh (or something like this)." Thereafter follow some more Mike verses, and at one point he sings: "Well, Minnie she checked out the national papers, Keeping informed of those coast-to-coast capers (?). Tired of the biased news (views?) that they are bringing Said she'd rather hear some Fruvous scat singing." ....and he and Dave scat back and forth, which immediately precedes the grand finale of the song.
