I'm ADHD, which means I haven't the slightest idea what all of these stupid initials are all about... I'm also sorta drunk from a piss poor New Year's night and just checking in for a set list, but since I've been " lurking", I think the term is for about 6 months now, I might as well "come out in the NM, as any time, and rear my ugly head... and also ask, anybody got any tickets - - - ANY TICKETS --- for NY's day? I'm begging here --- well, if not, have a helluva concert! To add to the post about Psycho Killer being a cover song, did y'all know that "Early Morning Rain" is a cover song... originally by Gordon Lightfoot...and there really is a "Gord's Gold" album, yes, a "record" (those old-fart thingies with grooves) which, if you like the MF version, you might like. Also, Gordon Lightfoot is going to be at the Keswick Theater in March (I think, or thereabouts). for those in the area. I saw him back in the Dark Ages (in the mid-70's, to be exactly vague) at the Academy of Music in Philly and he was marvelous then...can't vouch for him now, but I'll be there, with bells on! And what's that you're talking about when you refer to "how Jian smells"... fess up, you horney little cuties, that's the kind of question that can keep a body tossing and turning all night...who was the lucky f....er who got that close or do I just live a blighted existence here in the backwaters of post Beatles, bost Greatful Dead fandome? And, while I'm in a chatty mood, why are you guys so pissy towards eachother? Why can't everyone lighten up at, and about concerts? We're all just doing our thing, enjoying the music in our own way, and seems like too many folks spend too much time watching each other instead of gettin' down with the band, helping them take new musical directions and not getting hung up on "formula" concert behavior. Sure, it's fun to know and join in the responses to the "King of Spain", but expecting new concert fans to read the FAQ's or face shame and humiliation in the future is just WAY TOO ANAL for some folks, and you help the band you support by helping them to grow and develope more universal appeal, or you watch them whither and die...your choice! When you've got one of the only improv. bands going anywhere, a great basic rep. and extreme musical talent and growth potential in all band members, don't risk turning potential fans and supporters off by your dictarorial (some have even used the word "fasciest") ways. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 1 Jan 2000 03:47:44 -0600 From: "Kathleen Cain" Subject: Re: OT: Band Nerds (was Re: Minnie the Moocher) wrote in message news:0.4a358c72.259e94b9@aol.com... > > Just school stuff? We played Trivial Pursuit tonight at the New Year's party I went to, and I wasn't allowed to read the questions as they had a hard time understanding me! I LOVE to read the questions, so it was a bit of a bummer, but it was a fun party anyway. Glad to know you're home safe. Hadn't heard from you so I was wondering. Kathleen P.S. What a nightmare! Holy cow! I didn't realize this was going to turn into a "who has the oldest memory" thing, but at the risk of "something", I just reached the half century mark a little over a week ago, and your posts have really brought back some memories! The ditto machines (and how creative a name is THAT?): I used to not only run these off, but as a teacher in the '70s, had to make them and duplicate them. AH, the smell of alcohol! I remember pre-computer days (at least before they were widely used). The computer we had at college took up a very large space (several rooms) and did use the punch cards. I never learned to use the keypunch machine--too "far out" for me! And if you got to interact with the computer, it was a VERY BIG DEAL. Manual typewriters: I still have two of them, though they are relegated to the storeroom. If I hold onto them long enough, they will be very valuable--to someone who wants a real blast from the past! Telephones: When I was a kid, we still had the old CRANK party line phones. We had both the wall kind and then a desk model that weighed about 50 pounds! It was a very big deal to get rotary dial phones (the first ones also about as heavy!). And when I first had to rent my own phones, I always had the rotary ones. Just switched over a few years ago--a combination of nostalgia and economy (they were the cheapest!). Obviously, that was before we bought our own phones and had to rely on renting them from Ma Bell (or whomever). Holy cannolli (again!), I really am a fogey-- all those memories of "I remember when" are really making me sound like my grandma (horse and buggy, no electricity, washing machines, etc.) I'll race you with my walker!! *Lois (Fogeyfru) ------------------------------ Date: 01 Jan 2000 15:07:00 GMT From: spychicr@aol.compoot (Rai-Marie) Subject: Congradulations Doris Lessing! 'Twas interesting this morning when I opened the paper. After reading the comics, I flipped to the "newsmakers" section and this was the little snippet I found: "Former James Bond star Sean Connery reportedly denied a knighthood two years ago because of his passionate Scottish nationalism, won the honor yesterday in Britian's traditional New Year's honors list prepared by Prime Minister Tony Blair. [Goes on to say that Elizabeth Taylor and Julie Andrews also became dames, and some welsh singer. Here's the important part:] Novelist Doris Lessing was awarded the prestigious title Companion of Honor... [more blah-blah-blah stuff]." I just thought that everyone would like to know. And if someone already pointed that out, je suis desolée ("I am sorry" for the French impared). That's awesome. Our band barely exists. The music program just recently (well, 6 years) started again. Before that we didn't have band for like 15 years or something. Our town likes it when we do parades and football games and stuff but they don't much like giving us money to do it. We have only 1 music teacher for the middle school beginners lessons, beginners band, advanced band, 7&8 grade band, high school band, and high school chorus. It's insane. But my dad's working on getting money in the budget for another teacher for him and I think he succeeded. (My dad's a selectman in town.) We have probably 350 or 400 students in my high school (my class is biggest with 100 kids) and about 43 of them are in band. Our band doesn't care enough about being good to win competitions. We usually go to them anyway and get another Merit award to add to our collection. I mean, individual people to stuff, like some of my friends and I do woodwind trios and solo competitions and stuff. And there's District and All State bands which some of us get into. But basically our band's like yeah whatever. ::shrug:: It's weird. Most of our band people are good kids more or less, but we have a VERY wide range of grades in there...definitely not all on the honor roll. But, that's us. And we're sometimes very close as a band. And we did go to Florida for a performance and some fun 2 years ago. And we're going to New York this spring. Can't wait. :) - ------------> Ln ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 01 Jan 2000 18:58:46 GMT From: SugarFly26@aol.com Subject: Re: OT: Band Nerds (was Re: Minnie the Moocher) Lol, mine too!
