And I'm yet another former band geek/band fag... I was even a section leader! :) I didn't do band in college, though... just jr. high and high school. Clarinet was my main squeeze, but I also play flute, sax, and piano. I wonder what the link is... why do so many band people dig Fruvous? Their primary instruments are their vocals... (although I'm not denying in any way, shape, or form that their instrumentalism is great....) It's all interesting. :) Colleen Anne ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 01 Jan 2000 02:08:57 GMT From: =?iso-8859-1?q?Kyla=20J?= Subject: Re: OT: Band Nerds (was Re: Minnie the Moocher) I'm a band geek and proud of it. And about why so many band geeks like Moxy, I'm not sure myself, but we have 6 Früheads in our band, plus a few more in choir and a few more who were in the school play. Apparently, Früheads appeared at my school with Nicole the Wondernerd, whom we met at both concerts that we've gone to, who introduced them to the choir nerds, i think, and some of the choir people were also in band, and introduced it to a bunch of people there, and then i came along, and, having grown up in a little town near Toronto, Ontario, knew of Moxy and loved them very much and was delighted to find other fans here in the US. So we went to a concert at the end of last year, and then another one this october, and it is all super now. that's my little story! ~kyla ===== ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ "There's only now/There's only here/Give in to love/Or live in fear/No other path/No other way/No day but today" Rent "Horseshoes have gotta be tossed." My youngest brother is a senior in high school, and in November my mom ended her tenure of eight years as a marching band nerd mom. I don't think she missed a single home football game or parade. Of course, she's nothing compared to the insane Band Booster parents, who have no lives outside of band, and spend every waking moment at the school in the band room. Why?? Just for the record, since we're outdoing each other with high school geekiness, I played trombone and was section leader in marching, concert, and jazz bands; I played in All-County Band, 2 community groups, pit orchestras for musicals, at least one failed jazz combo, and county/state solo and ensemble festivals. Plus I sang in a community chorus and my church choir, volunteered at the Literacy Council, was a member of French and Spanish clubs, *and* taught Sunday School. Do I win something? In my school band people are usually considered > pretty goody goody, with the exception of some people. I know what Kathleen was trying to say since we were in the same school, and I'll try to be more specific... We were at at small school in Nebraska, and our school's major funding went to sports, yet community support was very solid in regard to the band. Out of 600 total students in the high school, 120 of them were in band. (Every cheerleader and sports letterman was also in band. Also, practically every person in band was on honor roll.) Our sport teams competed on the "B" high school level while our band competed on the "A" level. The local community also took immense pride in the band winning oodles of awards at marching and concert competitions, and so they helped us raise money to attend competitions, buy new uniforms, etc. My junior year we competed against Minneapolis and St. Louis schools that were three times the size of us. (So, we didn't win that year. We also didn't suck. I think we were 38th out of 115 bands or something like that.) So there. We rocked, and everyone knew it. Nyahh!
