It is a free internet. As a practical matter, however, I think a good way to handle this is just for whoever sees it first and knows the answer to go ahead and answer it and copy the frucon list so the rest of us know it has been answered. This is what I just did with chad's question. In some rare cases this could result in someone like chad getting a couple of responses if more than one of us goes to answer something at the exact same time, but I don't see the problem in that. He'll just feel like he's getting that much more attention. The only caveat I'd put out is not to answer something if you don't know the answer, so that we don't sound too terribly clueless. :) > ie: if someone asks a question about satellite > events, would Gordon just go ahead answer that person, before we post > general info to FHDC? I'm just wondering how we control the flow of > information. In the case of the satellite events, what I'd do is either let Gordon answer it, or give just a general reply and mention that Gordon is the one to really ask about that such as: "Yes, we are planning a number of satellite events. Wow! I got TWO replies to a two-sentence post. This group is pretty desperate for conversation, isn't it? :-) WARNING! Here's an *extremely* boring topic, but what the hell, let's see who bites... When I was in college, there weren't any PCs, let alone the Internet. Yep! I typed all my research papers on an instrument that was called "a typewriter." (I think you can find examples of these archaic tools in museums now.) They were contraptions that were used extensively in offices and homes before the early 1980s before they evolved into the IBM Correcting Selectric. The Correcting Selectric was revolutionary because it eliminated the very frustrating and time-consuming chores of "unsticking" the keys and being forced to correct mistakes by either: (a) using a typewriter eraser, which never worked because one inevitably would scrub a hole in the paper, and therefore have to retype the whole thing anyway; or (b) use the correct amount of White-Out to cover the mistake completely, yet not enough to glob up the keys. I cannot tell you how incredibly AMAZING that machine was. It was quickly followed with the "Memory Typewriter." This machine allowed a person to type an ENTIRE LINE OF TEXT (WOW!) on a small screen that could be edited before you hit the "return" key--afterwhich the perfect line of type would print out perfectly. Of course, if you were me back then (and I was,) you were in the habit of hitting the carriage return at the end of each line, so it would be printed with mistakes intact, and I'd just have to retype the whole darn thing anyway. Thus endeth my late night ramblings. Of course, this topic also brings up distant memories of onion-skin and carbon paper. Thank God those days are over!! Feel free to ignore this post. I've just returned from my second consecutive day of holiday shopping and am suffering a bit from consumerism overload. (Yet, oddly enough, I'm also having nostalgic thoughts about the convenient one-stop shopping previously available to me at the Mall of America. Is there any medication available that treats capitalistic bipolarism? If so, please e-mail me. I'll take two.) Wow, six responses to a fairly innocuous post. I agree, the slowness of the newsgroup is a combination of all these factors. Neither Vika not Kat's posts have shown up yet in Deja, so I can't reply directly to them either. Anyways, in my post earlier to Vika, I explained that I think A.J. was replying to a letter that was sent out to the Frucon committee privately, and that his purpose in mailing it to the NG was to explain to everyone what was happening with some of the things at Frucon (this is only an assumption and I do not speak for A.J. of course - this is just my best logical guess). I get this from the following section of A.J.'s post: > > 4) Perhaps we should have Josh post a general announcement stating > > that we ARE working on details for Frucon 3 and that AS SOON AS WE > > HAVE SOMETHING to post, we'll post it? Maybe they think > > that we KNOW all the details and are just not giving them out. > > I kind of tried to do this just now by replying to chad message and > copying the newsgroup. It was a small point, and I guess it got missed by people - I actually thought that this was a personal message that was mistakenly being posted on the NG, until I reached this section. Perhaps, it would have been better if something was stated at the beginning of the post. A tad confusing, but that makes our lives more interesting.... The more information they are presented with, the better. chad (and anyone else interested): To answer a few of the questions you've had... The reason that very little information has been posted yet is that most of the stuff you want to know has yet to be finalized. The good news, however, is that it is all very very close to being finalized and you should be seeing information posted shortly. There will be hotel information for several hotels, information on con activities and on satellite activities happening in conjunction with the con. There will also be information on how to get Frucon III shirts. The committee is well aware of the fact that many people coming will be under 19 and is trying to put a few things together that they can do in addition to just "being" at the con. The band is expected to participate in the con in some manner, but what that will be (i.e.. whether they will sing or whatever) is up to them, and not known to us at this time. Everyone stay tuned and if you have suggestions for the con (activities that you would like to see, etc.) send them in via FHDC. Thanks!
