This was a different vibe totally...more talkers/hecklers. I've already mentioned the talking during Tory's set. That really bummed me out because I was totally hooked on him from his set on Wednesday. His awful gift has already been mentioned, so I won't talk about that again. I jotted down in my notebook when Tobey and Cal were setting up that "We have a dumbek!!!" I was very excited about this fact. They opened with Sahara, which I think was slightly extended b/c the intro went on for a while, and Mike and Dave came out about 2 minutes after Jian and Murray. After that, Jian started in on this whole thing about not talking...of course, taking about 8 minutes about of talking to say they weren't going to talk. Then they launched into Half as Much. [side note: 1/2 has one of my favorite lines in a Fruvous song[1], so I adore hearing this one.] Is it just me, or is Jian on an Eagles kick? He mentioned them like 8 times at the NYC shows... When they were introducing Sad Girl, Jian said "this is a song from our new album," and sooo many people cheered. So Murray said, "Come on! No one likes our new album *that* much!" At which point, Jian mumbles, "Except for the four of us, apparently..." Murray totally stole I Love My Boss...he did this whole thing where he jumped right up front with the bass and totally rocked out, it was great. They played Pisco. This was probably for the guy who called out for "Pico" the night before. ; ) They played Raja, which was awesome, because I hadn't seen that live before, either. Sometime in the middle of it, someone lit up a clove cigarette. If you're not familiar with cloves, they smell REALLY good, very sweet and spicy like incense. It was about as perfect timing as you could get. Someone asked Murray if his people were there, so a bunch of people cheered...especially a guy who was extreme Stage Dave. Murray said that guy was a conspiracy to kill Dave, which led to a "Where have Dave-o's people gone?" improv. Mike did a solo with the "notes" on the megaphone during this...it was hilarious. I was extremely impressed with the guys when they flawlessly changed keys for.... Saucep'n!! During this, Dave knocked down his mic. I didn't mention it for the 12/1 review, but Dave knocked down his mic with his guitar during GITC. When it happened, they all sort of stared at the mic a minute (still playing, of course), and Dave just walked over to Mike's mic for the rest of the song. So when he did it *again* on Thursday, everyone who'd been there the night before was all shocked. Jian: "8 years we've been playing together and that's never happened, and now it's happened two nights in a row!" Dave: "It started with a sneeze, then there was a bump, then a whoosh and then a thud!" Mike: "It's these west village f**kers' fault!" So....they started the last chorus of Saucep'n over again so Dave could get it, which led into....a Saucep'n/food improv! Anyone who was at the 12/4 show when Jian said "Chicken Roti Boneless," this is where that came from! I actually thought to myself, "chicken roti boneless" when Mike said, "Popcorn Chicken!" and then, sure enough, Jian said it too! During the improv, Mike did a "Zen Conga Solo." This actually involved him *not* playing the congas. "He plays while not playing...emptiness!" During Nuits de Reve, Dave and Mike were doing synchronized bobbing while playing their guitars. It was absolutely adorable. During KoS, Jian changed his beat-box part slightly, so instead of saying "cha," he was doing this whole "funky-funkity-funk" thing...it was cute. Next was Darlington, at which point Mike said that Dave was really John Malkovich. The encores were Psycho Killer, Fly and If Only You Knew. It was my first time seeing Fly and IOYK, and they gave me chills. Truly beautiful. Ok, that's where my notes end, so that's where the review ends! Hope you enjoyed it! Connor is learning to play the guitar and actually spent most of the evening sitting on the floor right in front of the stage watching murray's hands. When i asked him if he had learned anything, he denied watching murray and said he watched the clothes in the drum all night.... Connor: "Why does that guys mommy keep her clothes in his drums?" Cody thinks Jian and drums are uber-kewl. He spent most of the evening staring at Jian and watching him play. He memorized all of the names on the cymbals and took great glee at being able to "decode" jian's setlist and announce to me what song would be next. Knowing that its not right to take things (!), i had to urged him (strongly! "Get it!!") to grab the setlist...which has become a prized posession...after a long drive home and after tucking him into bed he stopped me leaving his room by asking: "Mom, when i grow up can i grow my hair long and dye it black and yellow?" Me: "Well, if that would make you happy, then, sure" Cody: "thanks, mom. I love you" ...and that was *my* greatest fru-moment of the weekend.... tamra :) Cody also traded in his frucard for a keychain...but since he has no keys he was willing to trade it to me for a pokemon jungle pack...how bad am i?! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 06 Dec 1999 14:31:49 GMT From: vika@attglobal.net (Vika Zafrin) Subject: Re: amherst addendum(s) Spake Tamra : >after tucking him into bed he stopped me leaving his room by asking: >"Mom, when i grow up can i grow my hair long and dye it black and yellow?" >Me: "Well, if that would make you happy, then, sure" >Cody: "thanks, mom. Fortunately not actual toplessness, but lots of blatant exhibitionistic or attention-seeking behavior that goes on not just for a silly minute or two, but for the whole show. What I've *observed* (and my observations are highly subjective) is that the guys kind of roll their eyes and seem to try to ignore it, trying not to let it distract them from the real show, the one everyone else in the crowd paid for, the one *they're* performing. But God only knows what they think about these goings-on. Imho, if assorted exhibitionistic types would only remember that *they* are not the mainstage act that the crowd came to see, all would be well. I have no objection to their wish to perform, but I do think that if they want to go beyond being a (participatory, playing-along, interactive, Fruvous-encouraged) audience member and actually give their own full-length show, they really ought to go out and book a few gigs for themselves instead of trying to co-opt Fruvous'. The guys worked damn hard to get that gig, to be the ones people come out to see, and no one should try to steal that from them. To me it's the difference between clapping along, or belting out a line from Horseshoes or a verse from Drinking Song *per Jian's direction*, and willfully trying to make the audience (and the band) pay attention to *your* act instead of the band's. (Global use of "you" there!). Fruvous encourages joyous and spontaneous participation by the audience. It appears to me (and if that appearance belies reality, then this whole Fruhead must annoy the hell out of them and they're just too polite to their audience to say so) that they want us to clap, they encourage us to sing along, they get a kick out of the embracing lines in Drinking Song the group push to make Saucep'n ever faster, and similar *moments*. But I don't think they want to *be* the audience, and I really doubt they want to be upstaged. Yet that is what those who persist in blocking the view of others, or act out in bra-throwing, heckling, attention-seeking ways, appear to be attempting. The guys have planned a show, with a setlist and malleable but still somewhat-thought-out themes, and any audience member trying to throw that off course seems just plain rude to me. - -- Lori (snarky AND sleepless. oh what a day THIS could be ;) ) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 06 Dec 1999 07:08:30 -0800 From: Ellen Subject: re: tangents (was re: rant ... post d.c. show) Advace apologies if this message goes out more than once. Why would you think this, Vincent? Because no one specifically invited you? Or because you asked to be included and no one did? If you're waiting for the former, it's not going to happen. You have to choose which shows you want to go to, and make your own plans to get there. As with many things in life, you have to get yourself there, and once there, what happens is all up to you. ;) > Can I ask that, if *any* of us feels this way, we really try to > talk to each other Sure, a great idea. There's also a more basic set of guidelines to start with-- plain ol' courtesy. Be nice to people. Smile. Tell people you're glad to meet them. Ask them questions. Answer their questions. Find things you have in common. Don't scream in their ears or step on their toes (literally! ;). Just be aware of others around you and try to consider their comfort as often as you consider your own. I don't mean this to sound like a "DUH, barbie!" speech. My point is just that it's really that simple. If you're being considerate of the people around you, then they have no reason to dislike you. So if they do anyway, what have you lost but someone who is intolerant and not worth much to you anyway? > That doesn't mean > I think bad behavior should go unremarked -- but let's do it > with debate and some semblance of specific reference, not > vague accusations and wholesale putdowns of entire groups All right then. I debated bringing this up and had decided it probably wasn't worth it, but then Lori had to go and open the door for me. ;) Here is a perfect example of the Common Courtesy Breach: there was an *appalling* amount of line-jumping at Saturday's Clifton Park show. It seemed like there was a cutoff point (Those Who Know People Up Front and Those Who Don't) in the line outside the venue, and after about 7PM or so, the front end of the line just started swelling and swelling with ammf-ers. There, I said it. I recognized an awful lot of you, and that meas that you were newsgroup people. Come on, people, don't pretend that you don't know that this is horribly, horribly rude and unfair to all those people who *don't* know everyone at the front of the line. Just because you've waited outside venues for 3 hours on many past occasions does not give you some sort of Line Tenure that means you don't have to do it anymore. You do. If you want to get into the venue first, you need to be out there waiting first, too. If this were just an issue of getting a choice spot up front, it might not be as big a deal. But on days like Saturday in particular, it's also a matter of getting out of the cold and damp and into the warm. Lori, I don't know if this is what you mean by being specific. I would name names if I thought it would serve any purpose (do you agree? Because if not, you were also among the first 10 or so ppl there and have just as much right to speak of it). I've said enough. If you are one of the people who walked directly to the front of the line on Saturday and I've pissed you off, so be it. peace, ellen * Sent from RemarQ http://www.remarq.com The Internet's Discussion Network * The fastest and easiest way to search and participate in Usenet - Free! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 06 Dec 1999 15:57:23 GMT From: "Vokes, Laurie" Subject: OT: RE: Village Voice blur on Fruvous what color is the Dweeb Awareness ribbon? - -----Original Message----- From: sittin'onthecouch@home.com To: ammf@fruvous.com Sent: 12/1/99 11:44 AM Subject: Re: Village Voice blur on Fruvous Dweebs unite!
