Anyway, there were two "letter songs" on it: "C is for Cookie" as danced by Candace Bergen (she brings her boombox to Maria to get fixed and when she picks it up she puts in her "favorite song" to make sure it's working) and "U Really Got A Hold On Me" where Smokey Robinson is chased by a giant U. Other classics were my aforementioned favorite about the three pigs in the police station trying to ID the big bad wolf (they get a little bad wolf, a big good wolf who, if he saw a sick kitty, he'd "hug him and kiss him until he was well" and a big bad chicken before getting the big bad wolf), and a video clip with the guy from "Fool Moon" -- Bill Irwin??? -- waiting at a NYC bus stop with two other guys and trying to get down to some music on a boom box but ending up doing nerdy white boy steps. It's on the Long Hill Farm in Hillsdale New York, which is not really upstate unless you live in the City. Hillsdale is right at the point where Columbia County, NY, Litchfield (sp?) County, CT, and Southern Berkshire County, MA come together. If you were at the show in Great Barrington last spring, it's about 20 minutes or so from there. > She mentions a web site.... what's the URL? www.falconridgefolk.com The festival is one of my favorite vacations every year. It's an incredibly friendly comforting environment. They usually have a great line-up (this year's is particularly excellent, I must say). Along with the performers, there is also a great sort of craft fair on the grounds and a showcase of new musicians, some of whom are really really good. It's definitely an event to check out - you might find that you go back again even if the guys don't play again next year. /loren ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Jan 1999 22:56:01 -0500 From: "^kat^" Subject: Fru-Articles: Dayton loves the lads! (I of II) well, trust me, my uninhibited joy was difficult to conceal this morning when i discovered a *full page* devoted to the upcoming feb. 3 concert in our Dayton Daily News's GO! section (for entertainment in the greater miami valley). the top of the page says "Fruheads, Fruheads Moxy, Moxy Fruheads" w/ a large pic from the YWGTTM photo shoot & the caption "They come from Toronto, and they look innocent enough, but the members of Moxy Fruvous have started something." but without further ado, & for your reading pleasure, the article: Moxy Fruvous breeds Moxy fervor by Carol Simmons Are you a Fruhead? That's what fans of the Canadian-based quartet Moxy Fruvous call themselves, and, if you are--a Fruhead, that is--you'll want to know that the genre-bashing foursome are scheduled to perform Wednesday at Canal Street Tavern. But then again, if you're a true Fruhead and refer to yourself as such, you probably already know about the Canal Street show. Fruheads keep track of such things. With the intense devotion that reminds us that the term "fan" is a derivative of the pejorative "fanatic," Fruheads are consistent in their fervor. Of course, they know all the lyrics to all the previously performed songs--the English version, the French version, the never-recorded version sung on a an obscure Canadian radio program in the early '90s. And of course they have a Web site--www.fruvous.com--which is amazingly detailed in its obsession with the "Frulads," as the Toronto-born musicians are affectionately called. The site includes intimate bios of the guys: David Matheson plays guitar and accordion; Mike Ford handles guitar and percussion; Jian Ghomeshi plays the drums, percussion and flute; and Murray Foster plays bass. There's even a campaign to get the group more exposure in the United States by bombarding the David Letterman, Conan O'Brien and Rosie O'Donnell shows with letters and e-mails. (This only after much debate about whether Fruheads actually want to share their guys with the rest of the world.) But the real test of one's Fruhead affinity is exhibiting the willingness to travel many miles to see the whimisical, witty quartet in action. In recognition of this phenomenon, the band last spring implemented a frequent flier-type program that rewards the group's most dedicated followers with "Frumiles" for each show seen. Earning points at every show, with bonus points thrown in for "degree of difficulty" involved in attending, Fruheads can earn prizes ranging from key chains to a Fruvous songbook to bowling with the band. So what brings the Fruheads back again and again? Partly it's lyrics like this--from a Moxy Fruvous song called "My Baby Loves a Bunch of Authors," written in honor of a writer's convention: I like to go out dancing My baby loves a bunch of authors Lately we've had some friction 'cause my baby's hooked on short works of fiction So we split and went to a party, some friends my girl said she knew But what a sight 'cause it's authors night and the place looks like a who's who. Now I'm pounding the ouzo with Mario Puzo Who's a funny fella? W.P. Kinsella Who brought the cat? Would Margaret Atwood? Who needs a shave? He's Robertson Davies! Ongaatje started a food fight, salmon mouse all over the scene Spilled some dressing on Doris Lessing, these writer types are a scream! **kat's comments** i thought this was really an excellent article, considering it's been over a year since fruvous has visited dayton, & they get *no* radio airplay here. the writer seems to have done her research, spending some time poking around FDC for some tasty morsels of info about the band & their devoted followers. there's also a sidebar about jim's big ego, a favorite 'round these parts, who's opening for 10,000 maniacs at canal street tomorrow night. there's another local article i found, as well, but i'll put it in another post so as not to overwhelm anyone's news server. :) two articles about fruvous in one day! the excitement is more than i can bear... counting down the days (4!)-- ^kat^ "are you happy with yourself?" ------------------------------ Date: 30 Jan 1999 04:47:40 GMT From: jenncyn@aol.com (JennCyn) Subject: Re: Grover > I was at the hospital the other day doing my volunteer hours in the > paediatrics ward... When I saw this sentence right after the heading "Grover," something came to mind... I had eye surgery when I was in second grade. At Children's Hospital, kids were allowed -- actually, encouraged -- to bring along a stuffed animal or doll for comfort during surgeries; I brought a doll who also wore glasses. The kid in the next bed over had a stuffed Grover. Now, both the patient and the doll got wrist tags. With my doll, there was no problem fastening it. Grover's arms were too spindly. They had to put the tag around his neck. :) - - j ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Jan 1999 23:39:10 -0500 From: "^kat^" Subject: Fru-Articles: Dayton loves the lads! (II of II) so, anyway, i was browsing at my local borders, trying hard to avoid standing within earshot of the horrid jazz band playing tonight, when i decide to check our local Dayton Voice (not an "official" paper, but a free, artsy-oriented paper for daytonians) for any fruvous articles. lo & behold, there was indeed a nice article about our favorite lads--more background-based rather than fan-based, as was the dayton daily news article. here's what it had to say: Moxy Fruvous at Canal Street The fellows in Moxy Fruvous are bringing their barber-shop quartet on acid routine back to Canal Street Tavern next week for one night. The Canadian group mixes vocal harmonies, political commentary, folksy acoustic guitars, show tune arrangements, social critiques and out-of-left-field percussion into a Quisinart an dcomes up with a new day vaudevillian blowout that is without peer. The band formed in the early '90s as an a capella group busking on street corners. In a storybook twist of fate, the four singers were discovered by a suit from Canada's CBC Radio and within days, the lads from Moxy Fruvous were writing topical songs for the station. The radio gig grew and soon David Matheson, Jean [sic] Ghomeshi, Murray Foster, and Michael Ford were contributing satirical songs weekly. During this period, the singers/musicians began honing their songwriting in earnest and developed the multi-flavored sound that has become the Fruvous trademark. In 1992, the quartet pooled their resources and self-released a six-song cassette of their original compositions. The tape eventually went gold (500,000 copies sold) in Canada and soon major labels were calling. Moxy Fruvous signed a deal with Warner Canada and their official debut, _Bargainville_, was soon in stores. The disc quickly went platinum (1,000,000 copies sold) in Canada and catapulted the band to Bare Naked [sic] Ladies-like status in their homeland. _Wood_ from '95 and _You Will Go to the Moon_ from '97 were as successful as _Bargainville_ in the Great White North, but the quartet has still been unable to crack into the American mainstream like fellow Canadians Bare Naked [sic] Ladies. In mid-1998, the quartet released _Live Noise_ (Bottom Line Record Company), the best representation to date of the Fruvous experience and a good introduction to the band's world of sound. [italics] Moxy Fruvous returns to town on Wednesday, Feb. 3, for a show at Canal Street Tavern. To find out more, check out the band's official website at www.fruvous.com or call [937] 461-9343. **kat's comments** well, ok, so none of this is any surprise to all of us. but as far as giving a brief history of fruvous to those unfamiliar w/ their work, it does a fairly decent job (aside from using the former spelling of jian's name & failing to spell "barenaked" as one word. grrr.). however, i prefer the whimsy of the other article (& the fact that it included a picture *grin*), as i'm not sure if the body of this article is enough to convince anyone to come see the show next wed. at least, i'm *assuming* that's what the intent of this article was... oh, & btw, based on recommendations read here over the past week, while i was at borders i picked up _how to travel with a salmon_ by umberto eco and _neverwhere_ by neil gaiman. now, i just need to find the time to *read* these... ^kat^ "haven't i payed my dues by now, and don't i get the right to choose?" www.geocites.com/Broadway/Stage/4014 ------------------------------ End of alt.music.moxy-fruvous digest V3 #99 *******************************************
