They are listing The Magicians Nephew as #1. They've been numbering them that way for quite a long while (at least 3 editions, probably more) and I think it makes sense. It's in chronological order (as much as possible, The Horse and His Boy was *during* LW&W) and this is how I read them. I don't think it takes away from the magic at all. Discovering who the Professor was or where the Wardrobe came from has nothing to do with the point of the book. As a religious allegory, it makes more sense that the Creation Story come first, before the Sacrifice. I don't know, I find myself kind of skeptical about their claim. I mean, nothing about the books indicates that he wrote TMN before Lion, even though, biblically speaking, TMN is the Genesis book. Lion doesn't anticipate TMN at all, whereas TMN references backwards to Lion. Also, the copyright dates listed on my set (circa 1980) indicate that Lion was copyrighted 6 years before TMN. The only thing I can think of to justify putting TMN first, is the fact that it is the Genesis book, and referencing the biblical allusions throughout the series, some people might want to put Genesis before the New Testament death/resurrection of the Christ figure (Lion). I dunno, it also seems weird that Lewis would change his mind long after they've been published and indicate that future publications should be renumbered. I guess I'm still skeptical and completely anal :) - -- Trace gemini@p3.net *sniff* Target is within sniffing range. Hailing on all frequencies. *woop woop* Visual acquired. Our bogie is at 9:00. Languages are beautiful and unique and complex, and each one will tell the same story in a slightly different way. One of my favorite books is _The Innocence of the Devil_, by Nawal El Sa'adawi. I've read it several times, yet every time I read it I spend a great deal of time being very confused. Part of that could be the quality of the translation, or my own denseness. :) Still, I prefer to believe it has to do with the fact that it is an Arabic-to-English translation that I've read. Arabic is an amazingly beautiful old language, with nuances which cannot be expressed in English. Hey guys, All excited for the show in Dayton? I would be, if I were going. But for those of you who are, I need to ask a favor: Someone I know may be going to that show. Here's the story--last fall I got into a tape deal with Mark Freeman, who lives very near Columbus and goes to all the Columbus shows. He also videotapes them. In October, he and I worked out a deal (yes, some of you have heard this story individually): I used his camera to tape the the Ludlows show so he could be free to socialize and dance and whatnot. And he promised me a copy of the stuff I got on tape. He was even nicer and said he'd add the stuff he taped from the following show in Kentucky. He emailed me about three times after the concerts telling me what all was on the tape, *and then he disappeared into some mysterious black vortex.* I've emailed him something like once a month asking "hey, how's it going? Not that I'm impatient, but I was just curious about my tape. I've made a couple of deals." NO ANSWER. I understand that he's busy with his job and family, which accounted for sparse emails after the Ludlows show, but now I'm a tad worried. It's been three and a half months since the show. Let me clear some air, in case I sound like a bunghole: YES, I know people are busy. YES, I know the bootleggers have other things to do than sit glued to their VCRs/stereos making copies. YES, I am patient by nature. YES, I am forgiving. I'm just a little concerned. Has he disappeared from the planet? Kidnapped by teeny little superguys? I'm crossing all the parts of my body that are crossable in hopes that he's going to Dayton to make another tape. So here's the favor: will some of you guys be on the lookout for him and tell him I'd like to see my Ludlows show again? Semi-Nude M. Foster? Minnie the Moocher? The best KoS ever because Dave singled me out of the crowd? Thanks for reading this whole stinking thing. If all goes well, I promise I'll neverevereverever rant again.
