I agree with you, Doug. I'd be surprised if there isn't at least one big swing like they did this past tour out to Western Canada and the US. But if the travelling takes too much out of them, who knows? But really, I just wanted to appeal to the people who saw the San Fran show. What the heck is Jian saying when he mumbles is a weird voice something to effect of "Someone sweeging about your stew"? He's done that a couple shows and when someone laughed at it in Urbana, he asked if they were in San Fran (of course they mocked her when she said yes). I have no idea what the heck he is saying... - Chad ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Jan 1999 09:44:35 -0500 From: Chad Maloney Subject: Re: song wishes koogle@clark.net wrote: > I'd rather hear risky new stuff like Downsizing than BJ every night. You know, call me a freak (Chad, you're a freak) but BJ is one of those songs I never get sick of. BJs at pretty much each show and I still love it. Maybe I just like hearing small intricacies in it instead of paying attention to the whole thing (that's the secret to King of Spain too really - "There's a soundman over there"). Being realistic, it's really hard to them to get totally away from the bread and butter. Songs like BJ, King of Spain, Green Eggs and Ham, the Drinking Song (see a picture here? Indie Cassette?) are necessary pieces. When they aren't played, you have to deal with people screaming for them (witness Suess on '45). When Fruvous plays Buffalo, people expect Cross Border Shopping, even though the band doesn't know the words and don't feel they can really do the song. [Pardon the wild speculation in the next paragraph. Before I get jumped on, I'm not speaking for the band at all. This is just my feelings gained from paying attention to things and stuff] It's those songs that were developed on the street and have the flare of street performers. The guys just can't get that out of their heads. They think that is what people think Fruvous is (mostly because that is what people think Fruvous is). But now they are growing out of that stage musically and it seems hard for them to balance and try to give the fans what they want but also grow and keep themselves involved. Just my couple of cents, I guess... - Chad ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Jan 1999 15:49:18 GMT From: acegelka@bonita.com Subject: unfulfilled wishes > kat waves to aimee, another red-lighted uno partner *grin*-- Hi Kat! Many times have I summarized Fruvous on the TMBG-list for people but never have I summarized TMBG on the Fruvous list. I guess I better make this good. Hmmm... They Might Be Giants, or TMBG for short, consist of two guys, John Flansburgh and John Linnell. They started in the early to mid 80's. I started liking them around 1987 I think, but they had a 1985 demo tape I know. Anyways, they started out as John and John and a drum machine and a backup tape they made themselves out of convenient kitchen appliances, weird keyboards and other general things they had access to and what came out of it (at least to me, someone who lives far away from their native Brooklyn and was 12 at the time) was their self-titles first album (commonly referred to as the Pink Album or fondly Pinky). It was an art of simplicity and really great lyrics. They did simple really well and made it sound great. They got played on Al TV (and that was where I came in) on MTV. I bought their second album, Lincoln, the day it came out and since then I've been a Giants fan pretty well constantly. They had a couple "big hits" from their third album, Flood, which was released on a major (Elektra). I guess Lincoln was good enough to get them signed to a major, Flood made the Elektra a lot of money, and since then Elektra had been waiting for the next Birdhouse in your Soul or the next Particle Man. Along with Flood came a Tiny Toons episode featuring Particle Man and Istanbul (not Constantinople) which, if you asked J-random person on the street to name a TMBG song, most people would name one of those two. This gave birth to Floodies, fans whose end all be all for the band was Flood and really just 3 songs off Flood (Birdhouse, Istanbul, and Particle Man) and who vehemently defend with no good reasoning this album from all the real fans who know Lincoln is the best (sarcasm - personally, I think Lincoln is the best but a lot of people like Apollo 18 or John Henry). Starting with Flood, the minimalist days of the drum machine and backup tape were numbered and They started touring with a band. John Henry busted them out into full orchestration including horns (I'd guess the front money from Elektra for John Henry was pretty big - either that or the Johns lived small for a bit to allow for the large jump in payroll) and since then simplicity is still there but it is harder to find. They got off Elektra somehow (Elektra wanted another Istanbul while the Johns wanted to develop and not repeat? I dunno) and I think they are still in search of the perfect record deal (if it exists). If you are insterested in checking out TMBG, follow this simple guide: If you like good, sometimes odd, lyrics and can appreciate simple and minimal musical accompanyment purchase Then: The Early Years. This is a package of Pinky, Lincoln, and the b-sides from the EPs of that time. If you want to start at the beginning purchase Then: The Early Years as well. If you like horns and more deep instrumentation in short creative bursts (or you are taking a ride with Sheryl and want her happy), purchase John Henry. If you want a happy medium (kinda) between absurdist and full blown instrumentation, get Apollo 18 or Flood. I do recommend They Might Be Giants though. I like 'em plenty. They also have a mailing list (tmbg-list@tmbg.org) which is in the middle of a good discussion of Love vs. Lust and where sex fits into all that. Also you can checkout http://www.tmbg.org for info or http://www.tmbg.com for official info.
