Subject: Re: Two Unrelated Question Look, this has gone on far too long. I thank Mindy for her conclusions on the matter, as ahlf of what i have to say it what she said. Now that the Congressional Bromide and Cliché Committee has made their report, I should print some exceprts: "The phrase 'and the band played on' is believed to have arisen from the sinking of the HMS Titanic in 1912. Upon this cruise, the string section had been required to remain at their posts, albeit eventually on the top deck, and play despite an ongoing tragedy, seeing as 'only the boiler crew and steerage were drowning just yet'. This metonymic distinction of the upper-class ignoring the fate of the full society should not reflect against the gentlemen with the bows and rosin, as they may have been denied rescue had they deserted their posts and been sacked mid-sinking (no one rescues a quitter in times of triage). "The phrase is usually seated as a metaphorical compromise for 'whistling passed the graveyard' (ignoring the inevitable and superhuman to maintain sanity) and 'tilting at windmills' (Don Quixote's response to what he perceived were attacking giants or such, more on which shall be noted presently)... "Don Quixote, for those not familiar with this text, is a tale of Luddite schizophrenia. A crazy guy tries to ward off the corruption the oncoming age of Capital had brought his homeland. His more stable yet lower-ranked chum, played by the dog on a recent episode of Wishbone, would try to keep him in check when he'd really lose it. The most famous incident to the public it Quixote charging a windmill and falling on his arse." The Congressional report goes on to prove this made Clinton really bad, but they make too many leaps of logic (two of them: only registered Republicans can go to Heaven, and non-Americans can't go to Heaven either just as people born before Christ cannot) for me to accept it. Still, it shows the background. To enumerate: * The song came from the event. * The book and HBO movie about AIDS research are named for the song. * Kathy Bates was the reason for the recent movie, not Nardo. * that's enough from me. - -I hope you're having a good time, Dante ------------------------------ Date: 18 Jan 1999 01:27:09 GMT From: piscopinto@aol.com (PISCOPINTO) Subject: Re: song wish list BLOW, WIND, BLOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I did toss off a few responses to the board while reading but for some reason, most of them never showed up as far as I can tell ... oh well. A few Frumoments I wanted to share, though ... the hotel where we stayed had a large contingent of Canadian employees (we knew this because they wore little name tags with their home state if US or country if not). Naturally, my daughter Dana had to ask EVERYONE from Canada if they knew who Moxy Fruvous was. One, a waiter we had at breakfast, told us his sister was a huge Fruhead and he immediately broke into "MBLABOA." There was also a breakfast hostess who told us she went to a Tragically Hip concert with "one of the guys in the band, I can't remember his name, it was the drummer." When Dana asked if it was Jian, she said yes ... excuse me, but if you went on a date with Jian (or maybe I'm being presumptuous assuming it was a date), would you FORGET HIS NAME?
