How do you pronounce that? Jian Ghomeshi's name was originally spelled this way. When his family moved to Canada in his youth, his mother changed it to "Jean," perhaps because it seemed easier to pronounce that way; but it's always been, officially, "Jian" (including on his driver's license), his friends have always known him as "Jian," and he's been spelling it "Jian" across the board for about three years now. Newshounds as they are. :-) Dredging up an old post . . .I believe it was FruChild (?) who wrote an emotional post about American desensitization, specifically mentioning mutilation of young girls in Africa. I apologize if I got the original poster wrong, but I wanted to post a follow up to that thread. One of the legal newspapers that crosses my desk had a story about a case before the US Immigration and Naturalization Service regarding a new provision of the International Convention Against Torture. Ms. Anikwata, a practical nurse, is a Nigerian native who came to the US under her now deceased husband's student visa. The government is trying to send her and her 11 year old daughter back to Nigeria. Ms. Anikwata is begging the government to let her stay under the new provision to prevent her daughter's mutilation (Female Genital Mutilation - or "FGM" as the newspapers have quaintly termed it, to protect our delicate American sensitivities), as she was mutilated at the same age. She is also trying to avoid the traditional sexual control of widows which would allow her husband's male relatives legal rights to exercise their authority over her by raping her at their will. Unfortunately, the US government won't let her plead sexual discrimination, for various reasons including timing, and administrative changes. Since her daughter was born on US soil, the daughter is a US citizen, but her Mother is not and the courts seem to have no qualms about separating the two. Their lawyers are trying to get sanctuary for both of them as they have no other relatives in the US and if Ms. Anikwata is deported, her daughter would go with her. FGM is a new and landmark plea, and the decision of the judges here is crucial to future cases. Including a case currently pending, of a Nigerian man seeking asylum for he and his two daughters on the same plea. Let's hope our hunchbacked judicial system can perceive the infringement of human rights here, and swing on the ropes of our constitution to cry "SANCTUARY!" ladywench (getting "carried away" as usual) FruSpace - We came, we saw, we slept on the floor . . .
