"Peter Pan" by Patty Griffin, one of my recent favorites (off of Flaming Red). "Afternoons and Coffeespoons" by Crash Test Dummies, a reference to Eliot's "The Lovesong of J. Alfred Prufrock." The Indigo Girls nailed it pretty well with "Virginia Woolf." Einstein's Little Homunculus put an A.A. Milne poem to music, "Disobedience," and of course Jim's Big Ego has a masterpiece on their hands with Lear's "The Jumblies." Robbie Robertson's got references to Cervantes' "Man of La Mancha." "Peter Pumpkinhead" by XTC, which could be a reference either to the character in the Oz books by L. Frank Baum (aside from the Biblical allusion). Dan Bern actually mentions authors in a lot of his work--Henry Miller appears a couple of times ("Marilyn" and "Estelle"). I can almost guarantee no seats will be put in apart from the seats up in the balcony. I've seen probably 20+ shows at the 9:30 Club and they've never put in seats. I have been up top, in fact for a TMBG show in October of '97 I sat up there with my friend Phil Moss from England (hey Phil)and it was comfortable. We avoided the moshing that way, too. But if you get there early you can get in the front row on the floor and be only a few feet from the band. There has been a lot of pushing and some crowd surfing and moshing there in the past so you might get squished a bit, but I think the Fruvous show might be a bit mellower. I would agree with the size capacity estimate. I heard it holds somewhere between 800-1000 if you include the balcony bits. It's possible to park on the street down there or pay $5 to park in a parking lot, too, I just park on the street for free. The Michigan Militia, about 12,000 strong, is made up of a lot of different militia groups from all over the state. They meet every weekend for paramilitary training (shooting guns and crawling through obstacle courses). The current militia movement can be traced to the Ruby Ridge incident in Idaho. In 1992, Randy Weaver was accused of illegally selling two sawed-off shotguns and hadn't shown up in court. When federal marshals tried to arrest Weaver, a state of seige ensued, with Weaver and his family fending off the FBI for 11 days. Weaver eventually surrendered, but a U.S. marshal and Weaver's wife and teenage son were shot and killed. Another case occurred in Waco, TX in '93. Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agents led a raid on the Branch Davidians' Mt. Carmel Center, where both agents & Branch Davidian members died. After a 51-day standoff, the FBI attacked the Branch Davidian building with tanks and injected tear gas into the compount. Members inside started fires in retaliation, killing about 80 people. The bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma City in '95 was largely a retaliative act for the Waco incident. Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols were convicted of planning and carrying out the bombing that killed 149 adults and 19 children. McVeigh wa sentenced to death; as of press time, Nichols's sentence was still pending. For more info on the dangers of militias, with links to other militia-related sites, check out the Militia Watchdog Website (www.militia-watchdog.org). *whew* more than you ever wanted to know about militias, i'm certain. proof positive that it pays never to throw anything away... ;p ^kat^ "if you love enough, you'll lie a lot" ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 07 Jan 1999 23:54:26 GMT From: shazalinrea@juno.com (Mindy J Munson) Subject: Re: re-live the memories at the bottom line!
