Which is not to say that I was not weirded out by some of the smuttier stuff he did. I thought the dildo business was de trop. When he opened his first set with "I have big balls" (Tiger Woods) I thought, hmm, we're in for a long evening (We saw both shows on 1/1). By the time he got to the end of that song, I was hooked by his Nabokovian wordplay and Pynchon-like scatological finesse. Just kidding. Almost. But really, I loved the twists he took with each new line. Pam (spousal unit) went out to have a smoke between the Fruvous set and the Bern set in the first show, and saw a bunch of young frufans leaving, all bummed about how short the lads' set was. We felt sorry for them when the lads came back during Bern's set. The Fruvous contributions to Bern's second set were even better, IMHO. The "Building Monuments" (was that the title?) extended vocal jam impressed him as much as it did me; "What a machine" he said, as the Fruvous vocal mill chugged along. I liked the Bottom Line; though living within a spit of NYC all my life (and in Manhattan for a few years, even) I'd never been there. I'd go there again for something else. That particular show wasn't my favorite either. Some friends of mine were also hearing him for the first time, and I suspected that it wouldn't be the set that would make them fans. But the next night, the same people who nearly left the club during his set were asking about getting copies of his live shows... and checking out his CDs. In a lot of the songs he departed somewhat from the standard arrangement and lyrics and just had fun. For someone who knows and appreciates the song, this is a blast. Just as a "newbie" listening to Fruvous do an *express* version of GE&H might have been a disappointment... but for the rest of us who've heard the song countless times, it was an hysterical departure. An arctic paradigm shift. (sorry...) Anyway, don't judge too quick. If you heard him do a set that included Tiger Woods, Jew from Kentucky, No Missing Link, Talking Woody Bob Bruce & Dan Blues, Chelsea Hotel and Estelle... perhaps you'd have felt differently. His music is *very* varied, and he takes a lot of chances with his sets. He's the only professional musician I've ever seen literally open a notebook of new songs on stage and try one out from scratch... or have a friend from the audience hold up a sheet of scrawled out lyrics and chord progressions so he can try out something he wrote within the last few days... perhaps hours. I just had to post a few words about Dan Bern. I came out of the Bottom Line shows a much bigger Dan Bern fan than I was previously. Dan, like Fruvous, is utterly original and by definition won't appeal to everyone, but he is the finest songwriter I've run across since finding the fru-four three years ago. Suffice it to say I sat in stunned silence at the beauty and the emotion of the last song he did at the early show on Jan. 2 (the one about his family from Lithuania). It's been awhile since that happened. I hope everyone made it home safely. Hi to all the folks I met in the line and in the club. I'm terrible with names so I won't embarrass myself. I've been a Dan Bern fan since his first CD. I saw him his first Bottom line performance a few years ago. When I first heard him I thought he was Dylan. He has more in common with Bob than his voice, his poetic style and music owe alot to Dylan and Dylan's biggest influence Woody Guthrie. I was psyched by Moxy appearing with him and wasn't disappointed. Not only were they great individually they had great chemistry. My only complaint was with the Bern fan sitting across from me who hated Moxy and gave us fruheads funny looks when we showed our approval of the lads. It's the unconstructive profanity, perhaps. ;-) I think Dan's pretty funny and quite poignant at times. I also think he sometimes overdoes it ... I don't know if he's intentionally going for shock value, but some language usage is appropriate and some just doesn't work for me. And if the profanity is what you are hearing instead of the music or the rest of the lyrics, it's hard to appreciate. And probably each person has a different tolerance level for this. I do tend to prefer songs like Jerusalem and Marilyn and Sister and Most American Men and Kentucky Jew to those with lyrics such as cited in Kate's sterling example -- that's my tolerance level. (Although I do laugh hysterically at Missing Link and Tiger Woods too - -- and my little Fruquartet had a really good time running around Rockefeller Center in the rain Sunday, finding all sorts of big balls.) Anyway, I enjoyed Dan's shows on 1/1 and 1/2. I've seen him before, and I'd see him again. (And with a backup band, even a wretched one, he is just AMAZING ;-) ) But I have issues there too, and it's probably why I don't own any of his stuff yet. His language feels more assaulting than Fruvous', somehow. You know, I have had some pretty lame history teachers in the past, and (I think) history is one of those things that is truly dependant on the teacher. By that I mean that if I take a lit class that sucks, I still have my impressions from the readings, and can disregard what the teacher says if it's crappy. With history classes (which, in my experience, are primarily lecture courses), the student is far more dependant on the teacher. Previously, I have *HATED* my history courses (if I never ever ever hear about the frickin Civil War again, I will die a happy woman). Then, I found a killer teacher in 9th grade who gave me hope. The teachers after that sucked hardcore, but I knew that there was some value somewhere. I was fortunate this last quarter to find two brilliant History/Humanities teachers who taught my Hum 111 class (ancient civilizations through the beginning of the middle ages), and I plan on taking courses from them again. History is slowly coming back into my mind as a cool thing. I must admit, I was taking the Canadian History course sheerly out of a love for Canada and a desire to better understand it's systems, not so much because I love history, though. Anyway, I managed to get a really cool Philosophy Class (Phil 240 - ETHICS), and the prof rocks my world. I'm highly stoked to take from him (anyone who looks like a combo between Albert Einstein, Mark Twain, and Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. is alright with me). So, despite the fact that I'm pissed about my Canadian class being canceled, I do now have the opportunity to take this class, so I'm pumped. Hope everyone else's day was similarly killer.
