Moxy Fruvus" on Jan. 7. OK, so they spelled it wrong. But at least the guys are coming out here. Anyway, for those arriving from out of town, Burbank airport is the easiest although LAX is about the same distance (11-12 miles or so) from the Roxy as Burbank is. The difference is the traffic flow from LAX toward West Hollywood is almost always difficult. (The directions from both airports that Cookie posted are different. My route from Burbank will save about 20 miles of driving and a lot of traffic. My LAX directions involve fewer different streets and avoid the 405 Freeway, which is usually a parking lot.) The easy way to get from BUR to the Roxy is: Turn right on Hollywood Way out of the airport main exit/entrance. Follow Hollywood Way to Victory Blvd., turn right on Victory. Follow Victory to Laurel Canyon Blvd. Turn left on Laurel Canyon (south, which is toward the hills) and follow Laurel Canyon through the "flats" of the Valley up into the hills. This is a main road that narrows and winds several miles until you go up and over the hills and back down toward the rest of LA. (The major intersection at the top of the hills is Mulholland Drive.) As the road flattens out, you'll come to Sunset Blvd. Turn right on Sunset and watch for the Roxy, which will be on your right. (It's near LaCienega Blvd. If you see a sign that says you've entered Beverly Hills, you've gone too far.) (There are several other ways to get from Burbank to West Hollywood, but this involves the fewest different street names.) From LAX: Follow LAX airport exit signs to Century Blvd heading East. Turn left on LaCienega Blvd (which is adjacent to the San Diego Fwy I-405). Follow LaCienega Blvd. north for about 20 minutes (it becomes a divided highway as it passes through oil drilling fields then settles into a commercial stretch before becoming Beverly Hills' Restaurant Row.) As you approach the hills, you'll get to Sunset Blvd and you'll be right close to the Roxy. I strongly recommend Burbank airport for many reasons. Car rentals there are cheaper than at LAX and because the airport is much smaller, it takes very little time to get in and out from there. Hope everyone has a good time visiting this sprawling city in which I grew up. My family (my dad's side of it at any rate) does the same. I believe it stems from Grampa's Jewish-at-the-turn-of-the-century-Berlin family - apparently it was fashionable among the Jews of Berlin at that time to have Christmas trees. After coming to this country, Grampa and Gramma continued the tradition, and in time my dad brought the family over for Christmas eve. However, we kids would save our stockings till Christmas morning, when we'd have a huge breakfast (including lox..mmmm), enjoy our gifts from the night before, and clean up the living room. :) We also do something I've never seen any other family do. We open gifts one at a time, with the youngest person in the room starting by choosing a gift from under the tree for someone else. That someone else opens the gift, everyone oohs and aahs, and then the gift-receiver chooses a gift for another person. The only rule is that you can't choose a gift for yourself. It works well. - --Adam adamh@javanet.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 26 Dec 1998 01:31:37 GMT From: aadler1@tiger.towson.edu Subject: Re: Fruvous soothes the savage beast >I was amazed enough that I had to share. I was refraining from sharing my stupid fruvous related pet tricks, but... I took my kitty to the vet for a blood curve (he's diabetic and has been having trouble with his blood sugar) and he was a little more freaked out then usual. I was holding him in the examining room while waiting for the vet and decided that I should sing to him. The first song that came to mind was the Drinking Song. The vet was a little suprised when he walked into the room as I belted out the refrain. Second, I was fish sitting for a friend of mine. The transition from her dorm to mine to my car and finally to my parents house, seemed to cause him a bit of stress. He just sat on the bottom of the bowl for about two days, until a friend of mine came over and put "You Will Go to the Moon" on the stereo. The poor guy stayed the same until 'Message' came on, and he started swimming around all crazy-like. Once the song was over, he returned to his comatose state. Animals. Just in case there are some Colorado or nearby people who aren't on the DenverMoxy mailing list yet, I wanted to make sure to cover all the bases. Being unemployed and on break from school, I've got lots of time and little money, and would really like to make it out to the Roxy show on Jan. 7. My husband has to work and so can't go, but I'd really like someone to join me there and share expenses. I'm planning to take the bus, which isn't ideal but sure is inexpensive (and only takes about 22 hours). In fact, Greyhound has a 2-for-1 deal: The current price for a round-trip ticket from Denver to LA is $144, and if I get a ticket I can have any other person take the same trip with me for absolutely free. That works out to $72 per person, plus lodging and car rental. (Kevin: What was the name of that hotel?) If anyone is interested in going in on this with me, please let me know as soon as possible. I spent a Christmas Eve with a friend and her family opens then (not on the 25th). I got to watch her fam open prezzies. It was this crazy mad frenzy (not unlike that fish who freaked when it listened to "Message" that someone just wrote about). People were throwing presents all over the place and paper was flying and people were shrieking and it was all very freaky. It was all done in about ten minutes. In my house, we open on the 25th and we open one at a time. It's a long and involved process. My brother has taken to numbering his presents so he knows the order in which to distribute them. It's kinda funny. But anyway, I'm with ya on the one at a time thing, Adam.
