Now, just so you all know, I *am* a card-carrying liberal *grin* although I tend toward the moderate end of the spectrum. And up until about four days ago, I was also of the opinion that I was sick of this whole goddamn thing and just wanted it to be over. But the attack on Baghdad changed a lot for me. Maybe I was sick and tired of the whole affair, but not because I particularly like Clinton--in fact, the man has always given me the shivers. And the fact remains that, whether the inquiry was appropriate or not, it WAS an official government inquiry, and from the very beginning Clinton has done everything in his power to weasel out of it and avoid answering any direct questions. And, IMHO, that is wrong--he is supposed to be a representative of this government, indeed is supposed to be the Chief Executive, and to set himself apart and show as much contempt for the legal process as he has done really makes me wonder. I mean, take the 81 questions--his answer to one question was, "Well, that depends on how you interpret the word 'is'." Hello??? My point is, as sick as I am of the whole mess, I think Clinton is as responsible for its being dragged out as anyone else. If he JUST ONCE would step up to the plate and make a definitive statement, without having his arm twisted all the way up his back, this whole process would have been a lot shorter. AND I'd have a lot more respect for him. But he just keeps stalling and stalling until a crisis, at which point he bombs somebody. "Look! We have more important matters to think about!" Yeah, no shit! OK, yes, it may not have solely been his decision to bomb Iraq, but his timing sure was lousy. It could've been done weeks ago, or it could've been done after the impeachment hearing. I agree with Jian, that if Clinton be impeached for telling lies, let it be for the lie that he is a liberal! Yes, he is also playing politics. No, I am not condoning what the Greedy Old Party is doing, but on the other hand they both play the game. I have heard so much about the wonderful things he has done for this country. My answer to that is "huh???" Every pat answer I have received when I put that question out seems to fall short of reality. When we finally realise that, with the odd exception (and I would love for anyone to show me one politician that actually fulfills the criteria for *exception* in this case), all these *leaders* are simply in it for the money grab, then we can put our minds to the real task. What can we do to make the system better? I can understand why some of you have voted libertarian, or independent, or any of the other flavours. But, in reality, it is still more of the same. If he JUST ONCE would step up to the plate and make a definitive statement, without having his arm twisted all the way up his back, this whole process would have been a lot shorter. This is true enough... but where exactly in the constitution does it say that once a person is elected as an Official (ie President) that person gives up the very same basic rights that are granted him in that very same Constitution? It is of my personal opinion that the people responsible for pursuing this hearing and investigation where digging desperately for something, and in some cases setting up certain circumstances (ie Monica saving the dress). Can you tell me of one person who would stand and readily give details to sexual acts in front of an audience of hundreds, or on tape, or on TV? Yes he was backed into a corner, yes his initial response was to lie... but is that any different from any other adulterer when cornered? Not to say I condone adultery... or that I condone what he did at all... To say they were making a mountain out of a mole-hill would be at the very least an inaccurate comment... but I tell ya they dug like hell for _something_ and some kind of loophole to catch him in. OK, yes, it may not have solely been his decision to bomb Iraq, but his timing sure was lousy. It could've been done weeks ago, or it could've been done after the impeachment hearing. I think it shows an enormous lack of respect *and* responsibility to make such a shattering decision on the very eve of the hearing. My thinking is in the other direction... I can't believe that with everything that's going on globaly they would still push the impeachment proceedings... which other countries are just sitting back, shaking their heads, laughing and not believing our politicians' priorities. No, the decision was not just his, and while it _should_ have been done weeks ago it was not. It was a UN decision and that committee set the events in motion. Besides which... Clinton does not strike me as being petty and self-centered enough to willingly commit the lives of his own troops to combat for the sake of taking the focus off of himself. I have never believed it to be a decision to be made lightly, and even if none of this ridiculous Lewinsky nonsense had happened and the situation in the Gulf were the same... I doubt Clinton is resting easy in his bed while American soldiers are away from their homes and families during the holidays facing the very real possibility of seeing the sun rise or set for the last time. OK, I admit that was rather more than $.02 *grin*. Flame away. I just had to get that off my chest. Does *anybody* even slightly agree with me, or am I out here on this desert island all by my lonesome? No flaming from me, my friend. I'm still surprised people actually consider what I say and not run me out of the ng. I admitted before I started my little rants that I'm not very informed and don't know all the little details and probably don't have the right to an opinion. However, I know my feeling and I'm tellin' it from the heart. Is Clinton a liberal? a democrat? a republican? I dunno. Many times people have tried to describe the differences to me, when I vote I try and sift through the bull to see what the candidates "support" (for the month, at least), and what they've done. I suppose on paper I'm a Democrat, but I don't vote solely for the Party candidates. I've also gotten the impression that if a person believes in a little of what each party proposes, they are often lumped into a general category that is mistakenly called liberal. Can a president be non-partisan? Does he (or she, for the matter) have to be a Democrat, or a Republican, or a Liberal, or any other political party? I'm definitely not ranting right now... more like thinking out loud. - --Angie "Grown-ups never understand anything for themselves, and it is tiresome for children to be always and forever explaining things to them." - -- Antoine de Saint-Exupery, _The Little Prince_ ____________________________________________________________________ More than just email--Get your FREE Netscape WebMail account today at http://home.netscape.com/netcenter/mail ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Dec 1998 14:31:33 GMT From: epbuckley@my-dejanews.com Subject: Re: "Live" attendees? At the epilogue, they gave a huge and dramatic "gasp" while I mimed the actions (creeping through the gardens, gesturing at our beloved orbiting rondelle, etc). When the song finished we looked around and the entire party had come into the living room to watch us and broke into hysterical laughing and applause!!! I realized after the Gulf War Song that I missed the guys and being at a concert... and all of a sudden 59 days seems soooooo far away. [off topic, but had to share] Here's something some of you west-coasters can appreciate. I lived for about 3 years in California (San Diego, El Centro, Brawley and Mexicali), and during that time had been in 2 earthquakes. When we moved to Buffalo, I was still very sensitive to rumblings and movement (my cousin, for a laugh, used to sneak into my room at night and shake the bed, sending me into fits of hysterical screaming... until my dad caught him and threatened his life). It took me a long time to get used to things like the boiler in the High School kicking on, or garbage trucks driving by. Well, just now there was a loud rumbling and the floor started shaking... the desk, the chair, the cup of silverware started rattling. It wasn't momentary either. I know that there have been earthquakes in Rochester, but considering I was in a 6.5 in Cali, these little tremors meant nothing to me. This I definitely noticed. I had a brief panic attack, got ahold of myself, and looked out into the hall. A pair of moving guys were hauling a desk down the hall on a furniture coaster. I'd probably die of panic if I ever moved back out west. Ok, I think that's it. I had a Früvous dream last night too, but this post is already _way_ too long and I've got work to do. If I remember more of it I'll post it later. ciao!!! - --Angie oh, and BTW... I would not be opposed to a lingering caress on Dave's pate, nor the idea of Murray in a kilt (although Mike would look sooo much better in it, IMHO). As for Jian... well, lessee: me, him, a couple of hours and a pair of doumbeks (and Tyger Balm for our hands afterwards-- get your minds _out_ of the gutters!!!).
