Actually, Vika, this has a lot to do with very much, and I'm glad you wrote it, pointing out yet again the contrast between political "relevance" and what's truly important, where our attention should really be. there is a large, older Russian-immigrant population in Philadelphia as well with very similar problems -- linguistic, medical, concerns for those left behind. And the federal government does very little to ease the situation even for those already here, with its cutbacks on benefits to immigrants, basically leaving people stranded, desperate, alone and worried, often with little knowledge of English, and a city already strapped for resources to try to ease their plight. And obviously Russian immigrants are not the only nationality in this predicament. Meanwhile, although we don't allegedly have the taxpayer dollars to fund aid to those already here or to those desperate to come here, we have 40 million to throw into the Monica cesspool and Ken Starr's pocket. Cut me a break. I know that's gross oversimplification. But for once I'd like to see Congress more concerned with being humane than with being politically "prudent", whatever that means. - -- Lori, spewing ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Dec 1998 21:28:09 -0800 From: Kevin Subject: Los Angeles Show Hello, I see that some of you will be seeing Moxy at the Roxy on Jan. 7. H Ah, did I miss the turmoil in 1992? In 88? In 80, 76, 68, or 60? (any earlier than that and I was a little politically unaware). I won't hesitate to mention 74 and 63, two years when presidents were "removed" in unusual ways. In the United States we don't have a problem with removing a leader. The political system is self-perpetuating enough that the process goes on. The turmoil is all amongst the punditry. Not even the stock market seems to care about it any more. (In 74, the removal of the leader ended the turmoil, such as it was.) Frankly, I think it's pretty good that congress and the president are all tied up in this process. It keeps Congress from doing stuff they would otherwise do - -- and given this particular Congress, that's a plus -- and it keeps the president out there doing things to look presidential instead of dithering around trying to please everyone at once. Well, as a staunch Republican friend said during the '96 election, "If Clinton gets any more conservative, the GOP is going to nominate him." Clinton has operated as a fiscal conservative, worked on the budget and kept unemployment down. IOW, he stole the Republican's thunder by *not* being a tax 'n' spend liberal. Basically, the only thing that makes Bill Clinton a Democrat is that, as a young person, he was impressed by John F. Kennedy. Honestly, I don't care what political party the next president represents, as long as that person has some convictions and the backbone to stick to them. All day yesterday I was humming "It's Too Cold" over the political situation here in DC. I don't want to start a war here, and I mean this with the utmost respect and everything, but I think you might be overestimating the effect of removing the US president on the rest of the world. Not being from the States, having travelled somewhat recently, and having a housemate from Australia, I can honestly say that the changeover in US leadership really doesn't affect my life in any great way. Yeah, sure, in certain areas of world politics it may have some bearing, but to most of the world he's just another world leader. But yes, the rest of the world is laughing. Mostly 'cause no one can believe what a big deal this was made out to be in the first place. At this point, I just want to stop hearing about who/what he's done and get on with life.
