This sounds a lot like what Christian Amanpour (CNN's Int'l Crisis reporter) was saying in something I recently saw her in, about her experiences in Bosnia. And, then, why she went after the Prez on a live TV show on CNN when the US actually got involved in Bosia. (My reaction to what she did was, and still is, "You *GO* girl!" :) For those that didn't see it, she asked in very blunt terms why the US had waited so long to get involved in Bosnia and why we let the genocide go on for so long. However (as most of us know), people escaping from war- >torn countries can immigrate much faster under refugee status... which takes >less time and money than the normal immigration process. I wouldn't bet on that, Amy. The U.S. embassies/consulates in other countries, the people who deal with the immigration requests, do that slowly (*very* slowly) and very selectively. Case in point: my grandmother, mentioned elsewhere, was not given refugee status last summer. Granted, there was no official war going on. But people were shooting, people were looking for Jews and killing them (now that her Russian husband is dead, she's in an even more of a predicament regarding her Jewish...ness). She pleaded reunion with immediate family, and even then they wouldn't let her through. Before anyone jumps down my throat, yes, I do realize and respect the fact that there are two sides to the issue of immigration at large. The U.S. is not made of rubber, and neither are its resources. But the ONLY reason I can see that they wouldn't give my grandma refugee status (what they offered is called "parole" - which means NO rights whatsoever, including no Medicaid/Medicare) is her age. No, she wouldn't be working if she got here, she wouldn't officially be Giving Back To The Country, but you know what - maybe if she were here, my mom wouldn't take so darn many days off from work to go to Russia and visit her and take care of her. Interestingly enough, I was talking about this very thing with a computer geek I met at Brown, who I may end up working with on a couple of projects. Before he became a computer geek, he worked for 6 years as a social worker in San Francisco, working specifically with Soviet/Russian immigrants. He confirmed my suspicions by stating his educated opinion that yes, reuniting families and allowing elderly people in does have rewards for the States, in terms of general happiness, and therefore general productivity at work, of the other family members. So it's not just me. In my most bitter moments nowadays, all I can think on the subject is "but the Republicans don't have time for this. They're freakin' concerned more with where Bill puts his willy. What a joke."
