Katrin, I do hope you continued reading this thread, because I dealt quite extensively with this rather unfortunate wording of one sentence on an entire page that represented a values statement, not a dogmatic requirement. I'd like to point out again that these are some of the least prejudiced, most open people I have ever met in my life. That they happen to be Christian in no way diminishes the value and life-changing qualities of what they do for so many people in situations we as North Americans cannot even dream of, and they categorically do NOT discriminate against nonChristians. Furthermore there is absolutely no such restriction on the religious belief or practice of the artisans they employ. I understand that there is a lot of anger and bad feeling toward organized religion and the way it sometimes espouses prejudice against those who do not believe the same, but this is not what the Mennonites or their service organizations, or those of many other churches for that matter, are about at all. I won't shove anything down anyone's throat, but I do ask that people keep as open a mind toward Christian ideals as they do toward any others they may hold dear -- especially when the foremost "Christian" value being espoused by this particular group is tolerance, justice, and peace for all the world's people. If that's not a Fruhead value I don't know what is. - -- Lori, who is NOT Mennonite, who thinks Christ was a radical activist tolerant liberal, and who really gets a little tired of knee-jerk reactions against Christianity that are based on the bigoted, in her opinion decidedly unChristian behaviors of the Immoral Minority that seems to think it should have a monopoly on running her country, the Republican Party, and the world at large; rather than on the selfless, ecumenist, nonprejudicial and non-self-aggrandizing views and actions of so many truly committed people of faith of so many different stripes. Reacting to Christianity at large in this way is much the same as viewing all Muslims as terrorists. It's uninformed generalization, it's prejudicial stereotyping, and I won't accept it without comment any more than I'll accept attacks on Jews or Hindus. And furthermore Lori wishes to clarify that this is not a personal attack on anyone, nor is it meant to minimize the fact that this part of the MCC mission statement was poorly worded. I already have pointed this out in an email to the webmaster; however I don't necessarily expect an immediate response, as for all I know he may currently be digging wells in Honduras. THAT is the type of people MCC is. /kicks away soapbox, wishing someone would burn the damn thing. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Dec 1998 07:50:39 GMT From: "Arbie Fru" Subject: Re: My turn for Zero-Frutent posts - I need help!!! Doesn't this man ever intertentionally meet his fans? Bela Fleck and the Flecktones flew into Philly from Wisconsin to open the WXPN Singer-Songwriter Festival this summer. And after the show, I walked FruWench and Beth back to their car and then had to go find mine which involved either walking all the way back through the festival itself or cutting through this Penn's Landing version of a dark alley. Not being the brightest, I went for the alley. Only to suddenly become aware of its remoteness and potential for trouble when this person stepped out of the shadows. Luckily for my peace of mind, I *did* recognize the fellow and gave a cheerful hello. It was none other than Victor Wooten, and we got into a conversation about the insanity of flying into Philly for one night and then returning to Wisconsin. I'd just like to say that I have *nothing* against Christians myself (or against people of any other faith or lack thereof). I think one's religious beliefs/practices are personal business, and I try to judge people only on the quality of their actions. What I took exception to is the apparent statement that the TTV organization only trades with people whose religious beliefs are the same as their own (I realize that's a gross oversimplification). Now, I do feel that they would be perfectly within their rights to do that (that is, after all, how many religiously-based organizations work) - but *if* that were their policy, then I would exercise my personal right to choose not to buy their products, because I disagree with the statement. I'd never dream of trying to stop them from operating the way they do, or to prevent anyone else from doing business with them. Apologies if anyone interpreted my words to mean that I had a problem with Christians, Christian groups or organized religion in general. This organization does sound as if it's doing a lot of good in the world. k@ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Dec 1998 19:05:28 GMT From: Caroline Subject: Re: [Re: [Re: fruvous dreams (yet again)]] Angie wrote: >(tho I still sigh regrettably at any guy with hair longer than >mine). heh! it's a good thing i don't mind it...
