I think there is a difference between having the ability to create something, which is a talent, and art. In my mind art is something that should come from a place so far deep inside yourself that each time you give it form you should be giving away a piece of soul.To sell art would be like selling your soul. True art should be priceless. When one has a talent they have a right to put any price tag on it they wish, whatever people are willing to pay. However, once this happens it ceases to be art and becomes a commodity from someone who has the abiltiy to create. I also believe that once you give that part of yourself that is art a form and express it, it is no longer your. If someone wants to keep control of their art then they shouldn't express it. Once you give it form and give it to the world it is no longer yours. I consider Fruvous to possess both talent and artistry. I don't think i need to explain the talent part. However, the part that keeps drawing me to them is the artistry. Every show they do is a as if it were a gift from them to us. They also have to make a living and i would not begrudge them that. They give us Frumiles, keep their ticket price extremely reasonable (who can beat free)and take the time to meet, greet and remember us. Anyway gettting back to the point, art can be anything that comes from the heart, whether it is my 4 year old nephew drawing me a picture or a Van Gogh. My nephew will never have the talent that Van Gogh had, but his pictures will always be art to me because they bring tears to my eyes and because he gives them to me pure of heart. jude ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Dec 1998 05:47:53 GMT From: Srm9988n@aol.com Subject: indie tape Irrelevant aside here: Cee wrote: > Cat Stevens. Forgive me if I misinterpreted the > page, but I *would* like to know--I am not a Christian, and I have > serious qualms about supporting an organization that professes not to > respect religions other than Christianity. All is forgiven! :) It's a good question, because it points out the origins of the store as a Mennonite Central Committee project, which obviously would view itself and its work from a Christian perspective. MCC acts as a relief agency, irrespective of race, creed, gender, age. They are "missionaries" in that they try to act in a way they feel Christ would have acted -- promoting peace dialog, rejecting violence at all turns, respecting the dignity of all persons. They do not require that members of their artisan cooperatives be Christian. They do not require that their volunteers be Christian, and indeed there are Muslims, Hindus, and Jews who work in the store I work in. (MCC does require that paid staff be Christian -- although not necessarily Mennonite -- and I find that legitimate, just as I would expect any paid staff member of the B'nai Brith to be Jewish; these are people who represent not just the project, but the church as a body, and as such their religious beliefs are entirely apropos.) Any "evangelism" MCC might do in its service projects abroad is by personal, activist, tolerant example, and all of the MCC workers I have met also are quite open to learning and sharing the views of others, and to being taught as much as they might teach, in both spiritual and practical matters. In their view, each person shows a facet of the face of God, and all are equally valid and valued. They very much question the values we first-worlders promote regarding material wealth, capitalism, and environmental impact, and show the utmost respect for the differing cultures they live in. That said, it is a church-based organization, in much the same way that Catholic Social Services, or Federated Allied Jewish Appeal, or American Friends Service Committee are church-based. But it is an agency that works actively in the world, not to force its beliefs down the throats of others but to promote its VALUES of understanding, tolerance, and appreciation of different cultures, different views, and different people. MCC workers have been welcomed into some of the most difficult, war-torn areas of the world precisely because everyone from governments to civilian populations towarring factions knows that they do not take sides and do not promote a particular political ideology. They are there to give the help that is needed, and that is all. They do not discriminate with help even when something conflicts with their most fundamental views -- they are ardently opposed to all military operations, for example, yet the North Korean government's insistence on not having donations regulated does not prevent MCC from running effective food drives for North Korea. Yes, some of the food may well be diverted from the intended civilian recipients to feed the military, and they know that full well. But they respect the need the North Korean government has to assert its sovereignty, and ultimately they recognize that North Korean soldiers are still people who need to eat. By acting, without conditions, they have created a measure of goodwill and a dialog with this government that other relief agencies, and the international community, can only dream of. And I doubt they've converted any of the leadership of North Korea to Christianity in the process, or even bothered to try! Similar cases abound. I know MCC people who have been in Somalia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Bosnia, North Korea; people who have served where international relief agencies have been denied access. There are ongoing projects in Iran and Iraq. Yes, the workers are Christians. Yes, they will share that with those who are interested, but it in no way impacts on their practice of service to all in need. They are, imnhaao, the embodiment of faith, helping others not because of who or what those others are, but simply because they ARE. That is all that is necessary. I'm not and never have been a Mennonite, so I can't address their beliefs more specifically -- Krista, maybe you can help me out here? I just know that I respect them and their goals and methods tremendously, which is why I choose to work with their project when I could easily find one in my own church. - -- Lori ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Dec 1998 07:34:06 GMT From: "A.J. Ten Thousand Villages does market crafts >with spiritual and specifically Christian significance, including many >nativities and crosses. Actually this is not quite accurate: we do sell Judaica items, and several items do carry Muslim motifs such as crescents. >Ten Thousand Villages respects the religious teachings of people of >other religions when those teachings mirror Christian teachings. In >Indonesia, for example, decorated wooden masks and shadow puppets are >used to re-enact Hindu stories of good conquering evil. These elaborate >Hindu legends form the backbone of most Indonesian art and culture; they >also mirror Christ's teachings that good will in the final days overcome >evil. I take this to mean that shared values (good conquering evil! this is hardly extremist-right-wing-"family values" crap!), although expressed in a nonChristian paradigm, are supported and respected, and that the artisans who express those values, although not Christians, are not discriminated against in any way. They are not required to substitute Christian motifs; they are not required to espouse Christianity. As for those who don't share these core values -- well, call me narrow-minded, but I think if, hypothetically, they don't want to offer active aid to practicing Satanists or any other person or body whose values they deem incompatible to their own, that's within their rights as an organization. For example, for the foreseeable future TTV works with no craftsmen's cooperatives in China, not because there are no Chinese craftspeople but because the Chinese government will not allow MCC what it deems sufficient oversight in order to assure fair trade criteria are met. TTV will not give their imprimatur to a situation they cannot in all honesty say meets those criteria -- their mission, their credibility with other cooperatives, and their respected position in the ATO/FTO world is at stake. I think the use of the words "mirror ... teachings" in the above MCC statement is misleading and caused understandable alarm, but I want to stress that it does NOT reflect accurately the Mennonite Church I have experienced and worked with. As we all know, what sounds like reasonable wording to us can have a very unfortunate, unintended effect on others. Nicole, with your permission I'd like to submit your comments about this to the man in charge of the website -- okay? I have a feeling it's old boilerplate that needs to be updated or changed to prevent other quite legitimate misunderstandings. The MCC community that wrote it understands what it means, but obviously it's not clear to the web-world that is now accessing it... >In this way we can appreciate the craft and the culture it represents >even though we may disagree with the significance attached to it. Our >own understanding of the world is enriched as we look for validity in >other peoples' cultural expression--who they are, what they make out of >their lives and how they reflect on it. Gaining appreciation of their >crafts gives us a fuller picture of their world. Precisely. In a way it's like a Wiccan or New Age store/catalog (I'm thinking specifically of Pyramid here) also carrying traditional Christian items such as crucifixes. That doesn't mean they're espousing it, or saying it has the same significance to them that the ritual objects they prefer do, but because they're Wiccan doesn't mean they're prejudiced against Christianity, or only using it for a sales angle, either. It's a "different strokes" philosophy that also respects its own belief system as just as valid -- and recognizes that being tolerant and open-minded does not mean one has to deny or try to conceal one's own convictions. - -- Lori, feeling like I've posted way too much on this so now I'm just gonna shut up -- but I do hope those interested check out TTV! :) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Dec 1998 03:26:04 -0500 From: Thomas Fazzio Subject: California/Leno Say, with Moxy out near Burbank in Janurary, what'd ya'll think of overloading Jay Leno with requests to get them on for a gig?
