I only have my French written final left...hoo doggie. My French teacer won't accept answers in Quebecois (or any other form of French except that spoken in France), so saying: "J'aime avoir du fun," or "j'aime magasinage outre frontiers" won't really fly. This time I am wondering if anyone has pics of the Fru-cru when they were at Ludlow's in Columbus. I have been checking FDC daily to see, but noone has submitted any yet. I also wanted to ask two other questions. 1)Is there a show near or in Columbus, OH? 2) Are there any souls from the Columbus area coing to FruCon II, who wanted to carpool? It is way too far to go alone, but I think it wiil be great fun!! Well, thus ends my questioning session for now, so I guess I'll see you soon, Chattykitty "I Love Canadian Boys" - -----------== Posted via Deja News, The Discussion Network ==---------- http://www.dejanews.com/ Search, Read, Discuss, or Start Your Own ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Dec 1998 03:20:48 GMT From: Krista Subject: Re: fruGifts for Fruvous? For those who don't know, TTV (formally Global Village Crafts) is a non-profit organization that sells crafts, instruments, etc., made by people in 3rd world countries and then - here's the good part - gives the craftmaker a fair wage for his/her work. The stores are run almost completely by volunteers ( I am one such volunteer, as you can probably tell by this propaganda that I have ready at a moments notice). Ten Thousand Villages is the *ideal* place to do Christmas shopping for anyone, including Dave :-)! ---Krista--- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Dec 1998 04:08:17 GMT From: Krista Subject: Re: Holiday Magic Mindy J Munson wrote: My mom and gma and I gathered around the tree > and hung ornaments while my mom and I talked about our weight. Dont you just love family moments? =+) Wow, there must be something about decorating Christmas trees that really brings mothers and daughters together in a weird way. Last week my mom and I decorated while listening to the Arrogant Worm's Christmas album...not normally thought of as wholesome family entertainment ;-). Well, now, I *did* promise I'd add to this thread. So here's my LONG summary... 1998 was my first year of Fruving, so the highlights seem mostly to be firsts: Appel Farm --getting deFruginized with a really great, if short, festival set, including La Complainte du Phoque en Alaska, a very extended (if not the actual long version) of GE&H, Today's the Day That We Fight Back, and Kids' Song. Meeting all the guys afterwards, getting the full autograph-chat-photos-and-silliness treatment, and just basically falling head-over-heels in love and wanting more. Picking up Live Noise and having Jian promise it would keep my marriage together. :) I'd sprained my ankle the weekend before, and shlepping back and forth between two stages across three cattle fields was hell on me and my little Leki walking stick, but it was SO worth it. King of Prussia -- the gazebo-to-gazebo tour, and my first full-length FruConcert. First time I heard Pisco, IWHO, PTT, I Shall Be Released; my notes say Sahara but honestly I can't remember it, which really is kind of a bummer. 'Course, I was with a very cranky kid that night who didn't appreciate their swearing, so I was a teensy leetle distracted. :) They had done snips of improv at Appel Farm, but at KOP I first encountered the full breadth of their inspired lunacy. American plot to off Canadians with bug attacks, "Dave will be beaten", the Man from Scotland, Spidey slinging webs, Sarah McLachlan moments. What a gorgeous night! (Hope those moths have left Murray's brain by now :) ) Ottawa Folk Festival -- what an amazing weekend! First night low-key; Steve and I checked in, had our only restaurant dinner of the weekend in the Market, then went back to the Luxor for the opening jam: Vance Gilbert, Oh susannah, Christine Graves, Roy Forbes. Then the next night, the first mainstage performances: Vance, then a bit later Fruvous, featuring Minnie targeting Mike Harris, a truly fucked-up GE&H, "comment est-ce qu'on dit *white supremacists?*" then the amazing, incredible Luxor jam -- my God if I *never* hear Ash Hash live again I'll still remember Murray's wonderful facial expressions! Not to mention the Bowie covers, Pork Tenderloin, Porno, the Big Black King of Spain -- what an amazing, funky, all-around fun set! Just sitting there stage Mur, sippin' my beer, watching Ji sippin' his, wondering when he was ever going to get a drum kit -- but he didn't really seem to care; they were all just jazzed being there in a small, enthusisastic room, having a hell of a good time. It was so cool, I kept telling Steve. Probably the coolest thing I've ever been a part of. Still think so. Then the next day, hearing Sad Girl for the first time, and Gord's Gold of all things, later Marion Fruvous and Today's, and after their last set just chilling out the rest of the weekend, catching Vance again, Martin Sexton, Ferron, Arlo, Wyrd Sisters. Bumping into Jian bopping all over the festival grounds (and yes, he *was* perpetually eating something sweet!), watching him hang out with Vance, glad to see that yes, the guys do ENJOY these things! Also: finally picked up a FruMiles card, as well as the first 4 CDs (the non-Tobey, volunteer guy at the merch table the first night thought I was insane.) And there were rainbows! And I got to visit old homes, old friends, old haunts! AND eat poutine! :) What a great weekend! Wilmington -- my first post-joining-ammf concert, and so the first time I met a bunch of other Fruheads -- the first that was truly a social event. Also my first experience with the lads' experiments with crowd control. (Funny, I wound up with a knife .... typecasting?!). Let's see, what else ... first time in a Unitarian Church! First time I heard them cover Early Morning Rain or (particularly poignant at the end of a very long tour) Homeward Bound, and they treated us to Incredible Medicine Show, which started off a little slow -- I think it shows that they don't play it regularly, because it really could be a groovy song. It got better as it went along, and any Murray song is a cool song :) My most vivid musical memory of the evening has to be that absolutely incredible off-mic Gulf War Song. It was also my first time being a Fruconfectioner (Jian liked the brownies! Yay!) and after the show a bunch of us sat around scarfing down a bunch of brownies and cookies, waiting for them to come out. Jian beat the Flyers at their own game, and I got to talk to Mike a good bit, which was cool, because usually when Steve's with me he and Mike wind up talking quasi-technical stuff and I just stand there, as if to say "beam me up anytime" :P Katonah -- another incredible weekend: the first time I deFru'ed someone; the first time I travelled with ladywench; greeting the FruBus; meeting many more ng regulars; that amazing on-line singalong (may the lads forgive us for butchering their artistic property, but hey, we had FUN!); trying to do Frureconnaissance for the trufflewench despite having acute laryngitis; curling Murrmaids; Pisco fries; hearing River Valley and Stuck in the 90's; and Gulf War Song AGAIN!! So all in all it was an amazing Fruvous year. I heard many songs live that, though I didn't realize it at the time, are rarities I may never hear again. I was privileged to hear new, unrecorded material that just knocked my socks off. I met 4 incredible men who are friendly, down to earth, and astonishingly gifted. I met a whole bunch of nutty, insightful, intelligent and passionate people who seem to enjoy my company (cyber and real-life) as much as I do theirs. And I'll be starting 1999 right with 4 Frushows in 2 nights! What a lucky little Fruhead I am! - -- Lori ******************************* "fru gud me sleep now" -- Dante B. "And when I go to sleep at night I hear someone else's song, sung by some Canadians and thousands sing along.
