The quality of the drugs that day was not that great either, but that's another story. I really should have been drinking Molson instead of Coors Light. Anyway, I listened to a much better-sounding tape of Marion Fruvous, and it seems clear from this tape that it is in fact Dave singing the line about the Leafs' top defenseman. I re-listened to my PFF tape, and I just can't tell for sure on this tape. They fell in love and had an affair, and while walking around the woods she found a dove's feather and said it represented the happiest moment of her life. Their love was discovered, she was sent to a convent and he was castrated. Abbey life proved most difficult, and she even seemed to have become tamed. She bacame Abbess, and her lover became an Abbot, and they met once more when they were very old. They still loved each other, but he had reaffirmed his faith and bond with God. Uma the Abbess lay in her death bed and requested a certain cross be brought to her (this is how the movie started, btw). Peter Abelard, an important medieval intellectual figure (he was big on using logic and reason to gain insights into the Bible, an idea that was borderline heretical at the time) and a decent composer (if you like early music), was hired by Heloise's uncle/father/male-guardian-of-some-sort to tutor her. They (Abelard and Heloise) fell in love. She got pregnant. The male guardian hired some thugs to castrate Abelard. He lived, and joined a monastery. She joined a convent. They each rose to positions of prominence in their respective orders, kept their vows of chastity, and lived to be (relatively) old. The part about meeting as old people, I dunno; I guess it's possible, but it sounds too much like a poignantly romantic afterthought. They are buried together in Paris' Pere Lachaise cemetery (theirs is the oldest tomb), final resting place for such other notables as Jim Morrison, Frederick Chopin, Gertrude Stein (according to legend, Alice B. Toklas is in the same grave) and basically every famous French person ever. (It's considered a very elite cemetery.) If you're interested, Abelard's and Heloise's letters to each other were saved, translated, and are probably still in print (try Penguin classics). - --nicole the closet medieval history buff who knew all this off the top of her head... time to find another hobby... - -- "Was it Christmas or Groundhog's Day when your friends turned to shadows and dragged you away?"--Moxy Fruvous Visit Nicolopolis! http://wwwcsif.cs.ucdavis.edu/~carlsonn Reply-to address is modified to escape the spammers... sorry for the inconvenience. spam trap: postmaster@localhost admin@localhost abuse@localhost root@localhost ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Dec 1998 22:50:44 -0500 From: Chad Schrock Subject: Re: My turn for Zero-Frutent posts - I need help!!!
