This was his reply: __________ BELOW IS QUOTED DIRECTLY, WITHOUT PERMISSION ___________ arabel: thanks for writing. i adapted the astronaut from public-domain clip art, which came from a service that is one of my site's sponsors. (their ad banner should be up on http://www.zeldman.com/steal.html or http://www.zeldman.com/gypsies.html ) i guess it's a popular image. i've seen it on other websites since putting it on mine a couple of months ago. i also heard today from some fans of a german band whose album cover started from that same piece of clip art. the fans were originally under the impression that i'd lifted the art from the band's album. not the case. since you're writing on the same day, maybe you're under the same false impression. i don't steal art. in fact, i give it away: http://www.zeldman.com/steal.html my images are used by hundreds of people all over the web: http://www.zeldman.com/gypsies.html i do use clip art, stock photography, or anything else that's required to do a given job. designers do this all the time. it's what we do. designers are not illustrators or photographers or painters or typographers. we work with various elements, including images, and arrange them in ways that make narrative and visual sense. be well, and thanks again for your note. i hope mine cleared up this misunderstanding. jeffrey I'm a happy cog! enjoy the web: http://www.zeldman.com save the web: http://www.webstandards.org color the web: http://www.furbo-filters.com celeb the web: http://www.zeldman.com/15/ design the web: http://www.alistapart.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Dec 1998 00:56:05 GMT From: shazalinrea@juno.com (Mindy J Munson) Subject: Re: on female circumcision... As I read of the horrors in Uncle Tom's Cabin I reflect upon my feeling towards this whole issue. I have found that things ARE getting better in some ways. I believe that in hope there is resolve. Just the fact that these two teachers are not afraid to expose these conflicts point blank gives me hope that somewhere else a whole classroom of children/young adults are shown the truth behind it all as well. Maybe one day we will all see these traditions and customs for what they are. As the person who started this post I feel free to say that while I feel we should intervene, we need to work on our own society as well. The mutilations are done for the males sake, but arent some plastic surgerys as well? And is it not true that women still get .74$ for every man's 1.00$. Now, I realize there are differences just like there were in male and female circumcisions. That is not the point of this post. My goal was to spread hope and encourage you to state your opinion on such matters, making an impact on the views of your peers or maybe your children. You guyz are truly the best! (Man, reading through post-by-post on Dejanews is HARD WORK!) Anyway, ladywench wrote: >A non-fruvous friend of mine defines groupies as "someone who has had > sex withone or more members of the band in question." Yeah, that'd be my definition too. And brownies, however orgasmic, just don't count. :) Heck, I've never even been in the FruBus! (although ladywench and I *did* help Tobey park it ) Anyway, it's just very irritating to me to be labelled -- period. Doesn't even matter what the label is, although that one's more offensive than many. I just don't consider having a really good time, and seeking to replicate it whenever possible, to be indicative of a problem, or particularly strange behavior. And I know I'm preaching to the converted here, and I also know lots of you have had similar experiences with other people who just don't get it. I don't mean to whine. I just feel like we've got a little community here that understands things that other folks just -- DON'T. And when I'd like to share one of the most fun things in my life, but feel like I'm just beating my head against a wall, it's a miserable feeling. There was that depressing little thread awhile ago about failed Fruconversions -- well, I feel like lately it's all come home and smacked me right on the head. anyway, back to the topic. Nate DeRose was thanking the FruFour for being so considerate, responsive, energetic, and quality-oriented in their shows and in practically every other interaction they have with us, and I'd like to second that (or twelfth it, or whatever.) I've only been Fruving for six months -- but what a long, strange, wonderful trip it has been! And it promises to get only better, as I get to meet more of the other Fruheads. So yes, by all means, thank you Moxy Fruvous! You are amazing professionals, enormous fun, and darn nice people too, and what you've given us all is really irreplaceable. Thank you. - -- Lori ******************************* "And when I go to sleep at night I hear someone else's song, sung by some Canadians and thousands sing along.
