Can I do mine? (Although, strictly speaking I still have one more show this year--will the late NYE show be partly this year and partly next year I wonder...) May 20--Border's Instore: Hooray! My first Fruvous fix since November 97, and it's almost literally across the street from my house. Anyway, there was: Jian reading from "Lovin' Leo"; the Jewel poetry book (on cassette for in the car, too); Sad Girl; my first time seeing I Love My Boss, and Spidey (and Lou!); the kid from my mom's class who got up and almost knocked the soundboard over; bringing the guys cookies, and getting my new copy of LN signed; almost being late for the liturgy I was playing guitar in at school that night, but not caring, because I had just seen the guys... Singer/Songwriter Weekend: Hmmm...My friend Liz lost her Fru-virginity and promptly fell in love with the band (esp. Murray); getting my first Frumiles stamp (I still only have three *sniff*); the Hippie on the Post (later referred to in the 'XPN newsletter as the Hippie on the Pole--like, were they not *listening*?); waiting in line to say hi to the guys and my mom clapping for the Hippie on the Post (luckily everyone else joined in); Dave and Mike both deciding they liked Liz's shirt (the Lovebug)... Aug. 2--King of Prussia: Getting there for soundcheck (how cool!); the Gazebo to Gazebo tour ("Actually, we put the gazebo in wheels and take it with us"-Mur); "gazebo" being a word with *many* meanings; the Love Boat theme song in French; Mike's song about Philly; Pisco and IWHO and Half As Much; the moth that tried to fly up Murray's nose--related to the plot to kill four Canadians every week; I Shall Be Released; and of course, how could we forget Stickman! ("Oh, a Scottish fellow...") (he was at the Folk Festival too)... Nov. 14--Katonah: My very first Frutrip! Yeah! The fruids; "Hi New People!"; meeting Lori and her family, Joni and her mom, Ladywench, Caroline, Novac, everybody else; Tobey tempting me with a keychain ("No, I *am* going to get more stamps!"); free apples; "that was a *folk song* and this is also a *folk song*"; "coffee? oh, you want the arena snack bar"; Stuck in the 90s; Early Morning Rain; Gulf War Song (possibly the highlight of my year...); putting away too many chairs (oops!); getting my picture taken with Jian (*sigh*); my dad and I singing GWS all the way back to the hotel (and getting really lost somewhere in White Plains)... And I guess that's it. So far, though. love Lizzie ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 08 Dec 1998 03:59:52 GMT From: schr9271@fredonia.edu Subject: Re: Frtripping/Frshow Highlights of 98... > > 'Tis the season for year-end reviews...and since I'm in the throes of > > Früvous withdrawal (no shows till February after four straight months of > > Früshows) I figured I'd do one of my own *g* - -in a reflective mood....yup, it's that time of year. Ellen had played Live > Noise for me and I was kicking myself for not making it up to Columbia when > they played outside. i almost didn't go myself; it stormed *hard* just as i was getting ready to leave, and after the experience of the tibetan freedom concert [1] a few weeks earlier, i was skittish about going outside near a lake. i missed most of EFO. =/ the incredible thing about this show, my first, is that it was *free*, and walking distance from my then-apartment. whee! otherwise i'm ashamed to say i might not have gone. but i plopped down on the grass slightly to the left of murray, and was plain delighted by what i saw and heard. i had listened to LiveNoise a few times courtesy of paul (who does not post here), but i was in no way prepared. i was floored. bewitched. entranced. highlights that i can remember: "we're all right on cotton candy, thanks." jian prancing in front of the stage in (hilarious) imitation of the people who tried unsuccessfully to duck-and-run past while they were playing. and the poor little girl who just couldn't pull it together enough to say "moxy fruvous" in front of ALL THOSE PEOPLE! y'all missed a lovely show at the ramshead, too. i remember two things about it: (1) being petrified because it had been a month since that first show, and i'd convinced three friends that they just HAD to see this band when they came back, and wondering if i'd imagined it all and my friends were going to hate me for dragging them to the birchmere show. and (2), leaving the show floating on air after they ended with "i shall be released." and being convinced i'd indeed done the right thing. > We got there kind of late because of some bad > directions. "It's a big government building, you can't miss it." Sat far shyeah! i'd almost forgotten about this. paul: "get off the at l'enfant plaza metro station, then walk outside and look for the big government building." hello? have you COUNTED the big government buildings surrounding l'enfant lately?? at least MY agency puts numbers on their big government bldgs. ;) > The first show is kind of a blur: Ooh, they have an accordian *and* a banjo! and that was the beginning of the Far DaveLand Era. they were the closest seats we could get. i managed to convince the other three that yes, it was worth being able to see what was happening on stage. > The Gazebo show with like 3,000 people and 3,000,000 mosquitos: Stickman. sticks want to be free! > Michigan Militia, People finally stood up and danced. I Shall Be Released, i'd just like to say here that where *i* was, people were dancing up a storm from the start. ;) it was advisable to dance upwind of stickman though. (jump to 10/30) > From my vantage point up in the balcony, my view was somewhat limited, so I > watched Murray watching the rest of the band. hee hee. we were discussing this on IRC, i think, the other day. i could see: murray. dave. half of jian (the left half, usually). and mike's left arm, from the elbow down. please don't ask me to explain. i'm not sure this confines to the laws of physics. > 10-31 ummm. Oliver's Army, is all i can say. *swoon* > to be fun. Special thanks to Ellen, my Fruvous buddy. I can't imagine a show > without you! *snif* this may sound kinda weird, but i think this is the coolest kind of gift you can give someone, so i'm thrilled to have been able to give out a little this year. and i, in turn, owe thanks to kitty (katherine/bastet) by way of paul, who passed along her message that i MUST go to the show in columbia. what a neat gift! now i have this very cool thing that i can pass on to other people and watch them smile, too. peace, ellen [1] at the TFC in june, several people were struck by lightning during herbie hancock's set. amanda was a whole lot closer to it all than i was, but it was very frightening no matter where you sat. ************************************************************ "sometimes the songs that we hear ellen p. buckley are just songs of our own..." ************************************************************ ------------------------------ End of alt.music.moxy-fruvous digest V2 #100 ********************************************
