Oooh! This made me think of a question. I know I'm not the only one who listens to music right before going to sleep. What does everybody listen to usually? Every night I used to listen to Fell in Love, Gulf War Song and Morphee. Then it was Horsehoes, Fly, On Her Doorstep, and Misplaced (all programmed into my CD player like that, no flipping around). Then (until I got tired of having to turn off the tape player) Love Set Fire from the 5/27 Port Dover show. But after this weekend, I'm back to just Gulf War Song. I've received a number of sixdegrees invitations, via people I know who are on it, over the past year or so (the first one was October 1, 1997). I haven't signed myself up yet. I'm not sure their privacy policy is particularly relevant to my worries. For one thing, some people simply will *not* ever sign up. Among those people are some of my friends who have the largest number of "connections", so that pretty significantly affects how valid my sixdegrees net will ever become. Also, my roommate is on sixdegrees, so I looked around it with her one day, and noticed a lot of people I know with 100+ first degree connections, mostly to other people I know. I suspect if I did sign up, I'd have several hundred people to add right away, which is kind of daunting :) I don't feel like signing up if I don't have the time to "do it right" by finding all the people I should connect to. But the main issue is the privacy related one. I finally decided to write them about it earlier this fall, and they still haven't written me back. When/if they do write me back, if their response is satisfying, I might sign myself up. So, here's the letter I sent them, in case anyone else is curious, or thinking about this... From: cos@cs.brandeis.edu (Ofer Inbar) Subject: privacy, government, and anon.penet.fi To: issues@sixdegrees.com Date: Fri, 9 Oct 1998 18:49:02 -0400 (EDT) Hi, I just read your privacy policy at this URL: http://www.sixdegrees.com/Public/About/privacy.asp?PF=918273932500 I see no mention in there of how you plan to deal with an official request from a law enforcement agency, or a court order, for a copy of part or all of your records. Are you familiar with the case of anon.penet.fi and the Church of Scientology? What you're building at sixdegrees, as cool as it is, is also an ideal tool for a police state. The Internet is international, and there are a lot of police states out there. Certain US government agencies have also been caught at police state style tactics, such as investigations based on guilt by association. A tool like sixdegrees, where people voluntarily declare all their associations, sounds like wet dream for some of these folks. It was only about two years ago that it was disclosed that AOL had cooperated with the FBI in a child pornography investigation, allowing them to read AOL members' email indiscriminately. What if the FBI comes to you saying: "Hey, we're investigating child porn, and we suspect this guy of trading child porn. We'd like to read all his friends' email, by subpeonaing their ISPs, to see what evidence we can collect. Give us a list of all his friends." anon.penet.fi was forced, after appeal, to give up one private email address. The person in question was posting anonymously specifically to avoid harrassment from the Church of Scientology, but a court order forced his identity to be made known to the CoS. Then anon.penet.fi shut down the system and deleted all records so nobody else's address would be compromised. Have you thought about this issue? For the record: I am not a sixdegrees member, although I have received a number of requests for connection from people who are. And the above is exactly the reason why I haven't joined. -- Cos (Ofer Inbar) -- cos@leftbank.com cos@cs.brandeis.edu -- The Left Bank Operation -- lbo@leftbank.com http://www.leftbank.com/ "We all misuse the net for personal gain, one way or another." -- Larry Wall ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Nov 1998 23:37:51 GMT From: Christi218@aol.com Subject: Jon Bon Jovi (was: First concerts?) So I answer: Well, Lizzie, I have a few favourites. My requirements are rigid - I need to have a CD that will be good for going to sleep and then waking up. I must have peppiness in the AM, so I programme my CD so that the first track is a buoyant song, and the following songs are all mellow (I skip the first song when going to bed, it turns itself off after one hour, and then when the stereo turns on in the morning, the peppy song starts playing). CD's Commonly Found in Heather's CD Player at Night/Dawn (in alphabetical order, by no means comprehensive): * Thomas Dolby: Astronauts and Heretics * French Kiss Soundtrack (Various) * Good Will Hunting Soundtrack (Various) * The Lightning Seeds: Sense * Lyle Lovett: Road to Enseneda * Milla: The Divine Comedy * Mouth Music: Mouth Music * MF: Bargainville * MF: wood * M-Pact: 2 * On The Mountain 3 (recordings done at The Mountain 103.7FM) * Paperboys: Molinos * Steve Poltz: One Left Shoe * Elliott Smith: either/or * Troubadours of British Folk, Volume 3 (Various) * The Waltons: Lik my trakter * Willis: Willis That was far more detailed than you were thinking, huh? I usually listen to a good five tracks before nodding off, so I usually programme the entire album just incase. Anyway, I'm interested to see other peoples' lists. I wonder, does anyone share my tastes? Heather Moore ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. Wow. Cos, I hadn't really thought about that. I'm not really paranoid enough to spend a lot of thought on "what ifs" concerning the government harassing me, but as an extreme advocate of privacy and free speech, I have to admit that there is an large potential danger for police state abuse inherent in a system like 6 degrees. As you said, it is also incredibly cool. I don't know what the answer to that quandary is. Personally I don't want fear of the government to be able to stop me from enjoying something as neat as 6 degrees, but OTOH I'd hate to think what info like this could do in the wrong hands in the wrong country. Hopefully the 6 degrees people have an answer to address your concerns. A.J. - -- Q: How many art directors does it take to screw in a light bulb?
