I hope my boss doesn't expect me to actually get any work done on a Monday morning! So, in response to a few topics from the last 3 days: On Fri, Nov 13, 1998, epbuckley@my-dejanews.com (ellen) wrote: >In article , > Dagonet wrote: >> >> How many people out there in FruLand are Bab5 fans? > >better yet.. how many of us are deadheads? ;) Hi, my name is Alan, and I am a Deadhead. I saw over 150 Dead shows between 1980 and 1995. As I'm just recently getting to the "Fruhead" stage (I've seen about 12 shows and just started reading the newsgroup a couple of months ago), I see a lot of parallels as people discuss their road trip adventures, and the whole thing of trying to explain to outsiders why you would want to follow a band and see several shows on the same tour, often driving great distances to do so. There is also the tendency to disect every detail of a show, esp. pointing out a lyric change or anything that made that particular version of the song unique in some way. Every Dead show was and every Fruvous show is unique. Fruvous has the added dimension of between-song banter that ensures every show will turn out different from the one before it, even if the setlists were identical. With the Dead, the uniqueness from show to show had more to do with the musical explorations (in fact, they rarely talked to the audience at all). I guess the next inevitable similarity is the desire of fans who have reached the "head" stage to collect live tapes, so as to be able to re-live shows they were at, and to get an experience of a show they did not attend. I'm still surprised I don't see more mention of tape trading here. I have a small collection of Fruvous tapes if anyone is interested (and hundreds of Dead tapes) and am always willing to trade or tape for newbies. I don't watch a whole lot of TV, and never got into Babylon 5. I have seen every Star Trek (the original series) episode multiple times, and most of The Next Gen and lots of Voyager and DS9, though I don't consider myself a Trekkie. Someone else mentioned MST3K. I rarely saw that show in its earlier incarnation, but have gotten hooked the last couple of years. I used to watch Dr Who quite often, but the only episodes I find worth seeing again are the Tom Baker ones (I just love K9! :) My first concert was Jefferson Starship at the Spectrum in Philly in 1976. The first "band" I was ever into, at a very early age, was the Banana Splits. Followed closely by The Archies. Someone mentioned The Who's Tommy album. Yes!! I could definitely see Moxy covering any or all of this album. Just picture Mike in the role of Cousin Kevin, or Uncle Ernie! Finally, someone said they were a little intimidated by the newsgroup because it seemed like everyone knew each other and there were so many inside jokes. I felt that way too when I first started reading, but I find with any newsgroup the best thing to do is to just lurk for a while - not like 3 or 4 days, more like a month. After a while, some things will start to make more sense, some threads will die down, some threads still won't make sense but at least you will have followed them from the beginning rather than joining in mid-thread, and most of all you'll start feeling like you know some of these people even though you've never met them. Maybe I'll eventually actually meet more of you that the few I met in Wilmington. Like several others have said in regards to introducing themselves at shows, I tend to be a shy person in real life, so it's not always easy to introduce myself. I do find that I become more outgoing at and after Fruvous shows. The friendly outgoing personalities of the guys is contagious, and that's definitely a good thing. Sorry this was so long and I lost most of the attributions, but consider this to be several posts from me all put together into one. kind of an Alan-digest. Now I guess I really should start earning my paycheck. -Alan ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Nov 1998 19:34:19 GMT From: Donna Hunt Subject: River Valley, Ohio Hi. I don't know how many of you will have already heard about this, but I thought it was sad, interesting, and Fruvous-related. In Marion County, Ohio (another Fruvous reference, but not an important one) there are 60 cases of cancer-- rare types of lukemia and other cancers-- from high school graduates. Why so many? It's a high percentage, in the past ten years from a small, small town high school. Well, the story is, the school is built on land that was a military base in W.W.II, and was used AS A TOXIC WASTE DUMP!!!! The same land! The school is built on a toxic waste dump!!! The name of the school?? (HERE'S the fruvous reference...) RIVER VALLEY HIGH. Nobody is doing anything about it even though all these people are sick and dying because "They" say there's no proof that the toxic waste dump has anything to do with the cancer. (Hello?) But if ever a place needed to adopt a Fruvous song as an anthem, it certainly is River Valley High. thanks for reading, donna ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Nov 1998 14:25:05 -0500 From: "KatieWow" Subject: Re: First concerts??? >my first concert was in about 1984, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band >(side note: my former high school is located on the very same E Street) are you from freehold?!?!?!? township or borough?!?!?! personally, i'm a township girl. >(woo hoo Philly bands!) yeah man! i think i'll always regret not seeing hall and oates live, especially after BNL did a hall and oates medley at philly 10/03.
